LEGO has before and will continue to make sets based on popular Star Wars video games. Force Awakens. Old Republic. New Battlefront II. Now Fallen Order. Videogames have been a big part of Star Wars fandom for a long time now, and have absolutely gigantic marketing pushes. I mean, I’ll agree that we’re not likely to ever get a set of a cursed vault or that dragon fight from the legacy trailer, and maybe the Star Wars video games are more significant to their fandom - I wouldn’t know. But I think we can all agree that no matter how intrinsic the video games are to the Star Wars franchise, they’ll never outweigh how important the actual books are to the Harry Potter/Wizarding World franchise. And the books are clearly influential to the Lego designers. At this point we’ve gotten multiple background characters and even one who only appeared in deleted scenes, just because they have slightly more important roles in the original text. They even pulled a name from the books for the Slytherin beater despite the fact that he wasn’t given one in the movie. Under those circumstances, it wouldn’t shock me if the designers took any opportunity the could get to give us popular minor characters that actually played significant roles in multiple books (like Charlie, Binns, and even Peeves), and the video games give them that. icm Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 Now I want the summer Harry Potter wave to have some of the fried egg splat parts from City, all nicely printed to look like this: https://harrypotter.fandom.com/wiki/Lamb_chop It's all right, it's canonical to the movies! And not DH1 or DH2 either. Dang, now I want a set of the Hog's Head with Aberforth Dumbledore and his pet goat. Quote

It's a bit of an apples to oranges comparison. The BD-1, I assume, will be directly based on the Fallen Order video game. While it is true that the HP movies sprung out of the books, the entire Lego theme has been marketed as related to specifically the films themselves. Now, that doesn't mean that book-exclusive characters and references are outlawed from the theme (Peeves did show up in the early sets) but it would be through a single minifigure or a reference on a sticker. TLG won't market a set based entirely on something besides the film franchise because that has always been the main focus. The Star Wars situation is different since the (usually very financially successful) video games cover different stories in the franchise with new characters and locations. An HP set of Hogwarts can generally cover both the books and films since they're relatively similar subject material, but these characters from the Star Wars games usually have to get their own sets dedicated to those games. And frankly, Star Wars games are one of the few games from non-game based franchises that have that much market appeal. Hogwarts Legacy is debatable, but that Mystery mobile game probably isn't even on Lego's radar. Most mobile games based on licensed properties don't get merchandise, since companies would rather base their content on the "main" franchise itself. Again, not saying book-exclusive characters are impossible, but they are unlikely given the focus of the theme. Sets specifically based on the HP games are almost certainly not going to happen. Quote

Jedi Fallen Order is a video game. Which begs the question of if we might eventually see sets of the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy game or (please please please) Hogwarts Mystery. Personally, I really hope this is an avenue that could lead to Hogwarts Mystery content, since there are quite a few characters from the books that didn’t make the cut in the movies but have ‘canon’ appearances in Hogwarts Mystery. Nope. Hogwarts Legacy is an RPG video game with a character creator, so that's gonna be an easy pass for LEGO. Hard to make a set based on something in which the player shapes the characters, events and environment. Same for Hogwarts Mystery, plus also the fact that a mobile game is too niche for LEGO to make sets based on. Quote
NoOneOfImportance Posted February 11, 2022 Posted February 11, 2022 Does anyone think we could see a quotes set for HP this upcoming wave? Given that they are releasing one for Jurassic and 3 for Star Wars, I could definitely see Harry Potter being a theme that would work well with the idea... Quote

I mean, Diagon Alley came with a printed quote piece, so that’s kinda most of the way there. But I’m not sure any of the sets we know about are set up for that price/piece count wise. It would be nice to get some small adult oriented sets instead of just the big D2Cs - I think Harry Potter also has the fanbase for those to sell (Unfortunately, now all I think is that there’s a particular Molly Weasley DH quote that everybody loves but that’s never gonna happen) Quote

TLG won't market a set based entirely on something besides the film franchise because that has always been the main focus. Peeves doesn't really count along those lines, though, because it wasn't meant to be a question of deliberately using a book only character. Both sets he appeared in were from the first wave in 2001, at a point in time when they weren't sure what significance the character would later play in the series and when they knew an actor had been cast for the role, but apparently before the decision was made to cut those scenes. They went into it a bit in one of the anniversary wave interviews last May. But if they aren't willing to revisit the minifig even for an event like that... It would have made a lot more sense to get a golden Peeves instead of Voldemort, for instance, and yet nada. I wonder how much of this could also be a question of who owns the rights? Kind of like with the X-men and Avengers? Anyone know if that's an issue in the franchise with Scholastic, or have all rights since shifted to WB? Quote
spiderfan2000 Posted February 11, 2022 Posted February 11, 2022 (edited) Yeah, I don't really see LEGO doing direct tie-in sets for the video game. At best, I could possibly imagine an indirect tie-in where LEGO uses the game for detail reference in the slight chance they make an Azkaban Prison set, which LEGO would need to make up interior details for otherwise, considering its miniscule screentime in the movies that mainly shows the outside. You bring up a good point, this could be a legal issue. If the license for the Lego theme only applies to the films, then it really would be impossible for anything deliberately outside them to make it into the sets. From what I can see, Rowling still owns the franchise and characters while WB has the movies. This might be the explanation. Quote

Quote ABS ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is the type of material we use to make the classic LEGO brick as well as LEGO DUPLO. ABS is a hard plastic, it’s very scratch resistant and is optimal for achieving the perfect clutch power! Its a great material for a brick that needs to endure decades of play and be passed down from generation to generation. I like you anyway. In the last few years, Harry Potter was my favourite theme. The one I was most excited for, the main LEGO event of the year. Now it feels more like a side-thing. This year... I don't really care tbh. Horizon Zero Dawn set, Lightyear sets, so many Jurassic World: Dominion sets, 18+ dioramas for Jurassic Park and Star Wars, Indiana Jones sets, Bond and Fast & Furious Speed Champions sets, a chance of another Stranger Things D2C, possibly Fallen Order, Obi-Wan Kenobi or Andor sets, sets for new MCU and DC movies, and on top of that possibly the sets for Super Heroes' 10th anniversary. And most of that within three months period. Harry Potter is on the bottom of my list. I'll get a 20€ set, if anything. It would be higher if we knew if we're getting sets for Fantastic Beasts. That would ignite my hype. Quote
