Would you prefer the Ministry or Grimmauld next? (I'd try to get around to it tomorrow.) Quote

Textorix Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 So I have found a way how to connect two new Hogwarts sets into my big Hogwarts MOC (made of all Hogwarts sets released from 2018). I placed them in the middle of the castle, and they allowed me to fully close it thanks to ability to connect them in 90 degree angle. Lego should probably do another Hogwarts reboot next year or not release another Hogwarts sets at all, because I have reached the maximum capacity of this layout, so any additional Hogwarts sets wouldn't fit in anymore :DDD .... maybe an Owlery Tower would be cool, but that is it Quote
droobles Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 It is odd they only have 1 set under $50. Although I suppose they also have the moments sets out this year. But it seems they could have literally split Hogwarts: Dumbledore's Office in half into two separate respectable ~$40 sets - the library and Dumbledore's Office. Why not do this and flesh out the price range? To be pessimistic, as a long time collector the only really novel thing in this set is Madam Pince. Are they just trying to use 1 new minifigure to draw $80 out of collectors? Quote
girlie-site-boots Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 Textorix that looks amazing. How much space will it physically take up? Quote

I noticed that too, it does seem like a really expensive year for Harry Potter All they have to do is release Gringotts and Harry Potter fans might as well declare bankruptcy Quote

Why not do this and flesh out the price range? Exactly. I find this really weird, especially considering how many cheap sets were gotten in the last waves. Normally I'd be upset, as I tend to buy smaller sets (especially for Harry Potter), but this year the Hungarian Horntail is all I need. Quote
PumpkinPasties Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 After the reveal of the new sets, I found it interesting how as the films progress, we have less and less sets from each. In the 2018- reboot (excluding accessory packs, polybags, BrickHeadz and GWP), we have had: Philosopher's/ Sorcerer's Stone: 12 Sets Chamber of Secrets: 10 Sets Prisoner of Azkaban: 9 Sets Goblet of Fire: 7 Sets Order of the Phoenix: 4 Sets Half-Blood Prince: 2 Sets Deathly Hallows (1&2): 1 Set General (I couldn't put into any one film): 2 sets (microscale castle and Buildable Harry and Hermione). Obviously we haven't seen this years advent calendar or the D2C so my list will obviously change soon, but here are the scores so far. NOTE: I put Diagon Alley in CoS because though it has elements of HBP, it's mainly based on CoS. Quote

BlueberryWaffles Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 Wow, what a wave! I'm amazed! Obviously for me the highlights are the Ministry and 12 Grimmauld Place since they've never been done before, but the last Shrieking Shack was so long ago it almost falls into that category as well. And that baby thestral is adorable! I do agree with the comments saying that it's weird how focused the wave is on higher-priced sets. Combined with the focus on the latter years, this definitely feels like it's skewing at an older audience than usual waves. This also seems to merge the two styles of the rebooted theme: the Hogwarts sets have the green roofs and modular components of last year, but the non-Hogwarts locations feel more like the 2018-2019 sets. I think this is a decent enough compromise, though it does make me a little less incentivized to go back and buy the older Hogwarts sets (Clock Tower, Astronomy Tower, etc.) when this wave fits in better both with last year's sets and my 2010-11 castle. Blazej_Holen Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 Interesting wave… Since I dont like the new castle style, I will pick up the carriage, MM and maybe Shrieking Shack… although minifigs are superv this time in every set presented… Now I am wondering whether we get Durmstrang ship as retailer exclusive and also, what will be that D2C set? I still hope for Gringotts and some shops in DA 2020 style to match up, but something tells me that it will be something unexpected and different… but WHAT? Any edicated guesses? Quote
MaxHeadroom Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 Well things are definitely going to get expensive and we haven't even seen the D2C yet (after seeing these I really hope its easy to skip and not Gringotts). After 2020 the things I wanted were the Shrieking Shack, more OOTP sets, and DH1+2 sets. At least two of those are fully crossed off for me. Shrieking shack looks great (if overpriced, I might wait for a sale on that one) and OOTP now has enough stuff that it matches the 2018-2020 sets for movies 1-4, and 6 for me. It's nice that we're getting a start on DH but I would need the tent and the battle of Hogwarts before I'd be content (wouldn't say no to a set for Gringotts or the dragon either). I didn't expect to be interested in the Horntail but since it's minifigure scale and the stand isn't too conspicuous I actually really like it. Those castle sets are shocking IMO. The stand on a completely different level than the 2021 sets (flying lesson notwithstanding) and spring 2022 set. CURVES! Curved walls of castles! Not just ugly curved brown windows awkwardly jutting out of squares, but actual parts of the structure! Plus there's only one awkward "window with roof popping out of flat wall" design to go with the standard single stud wide hole windows and the standard lattice windows (although we get both gold and black lattice windows for some reason). That's without even mentioning the buildings finally having angles (and not in the middle of what's actually meant to be one flat structure like the clock tower was). Why they didn't start out with sets like this is beyond me. The 2001 sets had angles and curves too so they really had no excuse to be so flat and dull. The texturing is also far better on these sets, they aren't remotely as labored and it doesn't feel like the designers are desperately trying to make the boxes interesting by forcing in as many window designs, build techniques, and textured parts as possible. At first I thought they were so much of an improvement that I actually considered actually buying them but giving it more thought I would still hesitate to call them good. As for interiors Dumbledores' office is good and the library is fine if a bit bland and empty, but the rest of the interiors are all mostly empty which really defeats the whole point of this system. It's also great to have angles again but the courtyard is a 90 degree angle and Dumbledores office as a whole seems to be able to do 90-180 at most. That means that if we put these sets together the exteriors will mostly close in on themselves exposing the interiors which is is what eventually convinced me to not buy these. Don't get me wrong, these are a massive step forward but there's still a ways to go. They could perfect this format next year but at that point this system will probably be on its way out. I don't like having most of this post be negative since I really like this wave overall but the good stuff about all the fantastic non-Hogwarts sets have already been discussed here. The one thing I really like that hasn't been said yet is that it's nice to get a bit more forest again which I think was really missing last year. The trees aren't always amazing but I like getting a bit of nature and slowly building a forbidden forest. In general my ranking of all the 2018 revival waves would be 2019> 2020> 2022> 2018> 2020. Slytherin Alumni Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 I've enjoyed reading through comments and have been watching YT reactions as well :) The Tonks duck face and The Dark Lord tongue out minifigure head leaks are intriguing! A MoM OotP accessory pack would be great (Dumbledore, The Dark Lord, Bella and Fudge maybe) to pair with the MoM itself. And, I'm hoping the Tonks duck face is part of the Advent calendar (Xmas GP themed) and that it also includes an injured Mr. Weasley fresh out of St. Mungo's. I cannot believe we got a Grimmauld Place! It was the first thing I saw when I got on IG yesterday morning and I'm so happy :) I'm most excited for GP and the MoM! Thestral Set: I love the Thestrals. I don't see myself using the carriage though and the tree is a bit small/sad. If I buy, I would wait for a sale, or just bricklink a Thestral/s. I like the idea of having a few Thestrals for them to ride to the Ministry (different film but it works) Horntail: I am really impressed by this set. I thought it would be an automatic skip, but it's minifigure scale and Harry's printing is incredible. Not sure if I will purchase, but I very much appreciate the build. TLG designers did great on this one! Sirius' Escape: Overall underwhelmed by this set. Honestly, I don't like the Hogwarts modular system, which is simply personal preference. Dumbledore's Office/Library: Again, I pass on the castle builds, but I'm glad they make them for the fans who enjoy them and for variety. I agree, I would have liked separate Dumbledore's office and Library sets. It would have been good for price variety. Office $40 and Library $30 ah well, what could have been...I would have purchased the library set as I think it's cool and love the look of Irma Pince! Shrieking Shack: I love the glow in the dark moon transformation build. The Whomping Willow I could do without, but I know it's key to the scene. Lupin's werewolf form with the Demogorgons legs (I think) looks great to me. The interior is a bit small imo, but I thought that about the Hogmeade buildings as well and I believe it will match perfectly with those. I will most likely get this, but wait for sale or 2X points. MoM: YES! I really love this one. The minifigures are incredible and love that we have another poly juice trio in a set. Great playability being able to rearrange the offices/build to create different scenes (I guess I like modular, just not castle related ha) and the rubber duck easter egg, decoy detonators, interdepartmental memos, floo network, telephone booth and I love the green (Slytherin Pride). Grimmauld Place: YES, Thank you Lego! I love that they were able to create the concealment feature with #12. The Black Family Tree is awesome and another great selection of minifigures! Kreacher looks perfect to me. I cannot zoom in enough to confirm whose pictures are hanging on the wall? Hopefully Walburga Black and Phineas Nigellus Black are included. Excellent wave already even before the AC, D2C, GWP, Polybag or whatever else is even announced. Harry Potter rules! Always Quote
joeee Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 LOVE the Shrieking Shack but i wonder if it could have been taller if they didn’t squeeze a new Whomping Willow in there. (As much as I love the new iteration of WW) I have to applaud TLG team for the Grimmauld Place build. With the mechanism needing to show the houses on the side, I totally thought they would have to make it a Muggle household, but so smart they just made Grimmauld place interior be the whole thing! I think I am the only one who loves Sirius Black’s escape. I LOVE the archways! I just wish we got to see an iteration of the Dark Tower with the 2018-2020 style. Ministry of Magic is good! I’d love to see someone be able to double or triple on sets and stack those bad boys. Quote
Huigberts Builds Posted April 9, 2022 Posted April 9, 2022 I was thinking, what if the Voldemort is in the Advent Calendar but in his suit from the dream in ootp. Sure he didn't exactly make the face wearing the suit, but it looks a lot more festive than his regular outfit, plus it would work well with an ootp themed calendar. In case it's part of a d2c after all, the only place I can think of that could both include Voldemort while also being big enough for a d2c is Malfoy Manor. But for that price? Idk. Maybe an accessory pack makes the most sense. Quote

Clone OPatra Posted April 10, 2022 Author Posted April 10, 2022 I did a tally of all the new minfigure pieces across these sets. I wonder how it compares to previous years, but it feels quite good: Grimmauld: 7 torso, 4 legs, 2 heads (unless also Weasleys?), 1 head mould, 2 recoloured hair, 1 hat without printing Ministry: 8 torso, 1 legs, 6 heads, 1 recoloured hair Shack: 4 torso, 1 legs, 2 heads + recolour of werewolf, unprinted dark tan faun legs Dumbledore: 3 torsos, 2 legs plus + dress, 2 heads, 1 new hat hair Sirius Rescue: 1 torso, 1 legs, 3 heads (counting Sirius here) Horntail: 1 torso Carriage: 2 torsos Total: 26 torsos 9 legs + 1 dress 15 heads and a new head mould, a new hat hair, a recoloured head mould, dark tan faun legs unprinted, 3 recoloured hair pieces and Kingsley's hat unprinted Quote

Ferder Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 In one of the box-art pictures for Dumbledore’s Office they have the pensive on one of the side wings instead of in the top square, which actually makes more sense for accuracy. But that would leave the top module completely empty so it got me thinking what else could go up there. Dumbledore’s giant telescope? Quote

The telescope is a half level or so up from the main office, so it would make sense. And it wouldn’t shock me if it turned out the designers had originally planned it that way but decided that they didn’t have the parts/budget to do it properly or that it was too visually confusing (especially with the telescope room in the CoS set from last year). It shouldn’t be particularly difficult to mod it though. Quote
Seaber Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 This wave has removed quite a few characters from the 'no minifig yet' list. As very minor characters like Pince and Sinistra have appeared, I have included quite a few with no dialogue. I've taken their debut film as the one where they have the biggest role, as characters like Pansy Parkinson appear in multiple films in the background but isn't an important character until HBP. PS: Lee Jordan, Alicia Spinnet, Tom, Dedalus Diggle, Doris Crockford, Kings Cross Guard, Prof Vector, Grey Lady, Bloody Baron, Fat Friar, Augusta Longbottom CoS: Millicent Bulstrode , Mr Mason, Mrs Mason, Ernie MacMillan, Penelope Clearwater PoA: Aunt Marge GoF: Angelina Johnson, Roger Davies, Rita Skeeter, Barty Crouch Snr, Prof Karkaroff, Amos Diggory, Frank Bryce, Eloise Midgen OotP: Mrs Figg, Zacharius Smith, Michael Corner, Amelia Bones, Dawlish, Antonio Dolohov, Prof Grubbly-Plank HBP: Narcissa Malfoy, Amycus Carrow, Alecto Carrow, Thorfinn Rowle, Romilda Vane, Leanne, Katie Bell, Cormac McLaggan, Marcus Belby, Blaise Zabini, Pansy Parkinson DH: Charity Burbage, Bill Weasley, Mundungus Fletcher, Elphias Doge, Scabior, Rufus Scrimgeour, Xenophilius Lovegood, Aunt Muriel, Bathilda Bagshot, Aberforth Dumbledore, Dirk Cresswell Creatures: Norbert, Fang, Troll, Unicorn, Merpeople, Grindylow, Inferi, Ukrainian Ironbelly, Giants. Also Errol, Trevor, and Firenze's species have appeared, but not been named. Aside from Griphook, no other Goblins have appeared. I didn't include all the Slytherin Quidditch players but there are a few of em. I'm not sure if Dedalus Diggle and Doris Crockford are the two in the DA minifig pack so have included them. Quote
