New information from Promobricks regarding the Hogwarts Express set. The large display base and the huge amount of minifigs seem to inflate the price quite a bit.

"The Hogwarts Express itself is only a few centimeters shorter than the track on which it stands (90 to 100 cm). A small data plate with the most important information about the train can be attached to the base of the platform. The train consists of the well-known red steam engine with a tender and unfortunately only one passenger car. This has a total of four red train doors and three compartments in which scenes from various films are shown."

Well, it seems like this will be Emerald Night - part 2... only one passenger car for people to buy per set. Since it's $500, I can only imagine what aftermarket prices will be for coaches. Thankfully, this means people wanting to unload steam engines to recoup a bit of their loss at buying at least four sets (there have bee four or five cars on the train depending on what film it's in) will leave people able to buy the loco for (hopefully) much less. It's happened before, with set 10194 thirteen years ago.

(Since my Hogwarts Castle / Olton Hall loco isn't too great, I'm going to attempt to either buy one from BL once it's available, or recreate it via instructions.)

Just read the write up from Promobricks - honestly it sounds amazing - can't wait to finally see some photos - and will probably be the most expensive lego set I have ever bought

Right? No mention of dk Red for the color scheme… not really worth the price of admission tbh. Its really starting to sound like just an upscaled version of the previous Olton Hall?

TLG should’ve nixed the Kings’ Cross platform and made a 2nd coach with more memorable “on the train” movie scenes. Even the (re)inclusion of Weasleys’ flying car would have been better than the platform imho.

On the plus side, regular Bright Red would probably make it easier to make additional coaches without buying additional copies of the set, since it's a much more common color. Of course, there could be exclusive recolors in the coach that complicate that. But I realize that Dark Red would make the set a lot more accurate, and also more exciting as a parts pack.

It doesn't really make any difference to me either way. I can no longer enjoy Harry Potter the way I did as a kid/teen, in light of its author's ongoing use of her fame and fortune to promote rhetoric and policies that continue to harm trans folks like me around the world. It makes me a little nauseous even to think about it for too long. And there are plenty of better stories that have filled the void for me in the years since.

But I hope this set ends up having a design that train fans are pleased with, regardless of the IP it's attached to — if only to further elevate the standards of "deluxe" LEGO train sets, and pave the way for even more exciting ones in the future.

So I'm finding loads of deals on the 2018 passenger train now that the 2022 is coming soon.

Me too, actually just got one for $32 off RRP. Wouldn't mind picking up a second copy, if I could get an even better deal.

Hi, has anyone built the new trains in Studio or LDD and is so kind to share the model(s) with me? I want to try some double decker and carriage lengthening ideas for the passenger train, and some rolling stock for the freight train.
I was hoping there would already be a "Mods and improvement" thread for the sets here on EB, but it seems that others are waiting for heavy discounts too.

I have the 60337 (engine and carriages only) in ldraw format if you need it.

No update on this thread for one month... :-/

Are there any new rumors regarding the Hogwarts Express? I'm curious if it will be 6-, 7- or 8-wide and if it is red or dark red.

The Hogwarts Express is literally the only reason I go that theme. I wanna know any new rumors too.

I heard normal red as well, as the color. And if it’s going to be at least equal to Crocodile standards then I think it’s going to be at least 7 studs wide ?…

Oh, and I think it said release in September;… and according to my daughter that makes perfect sense because Hogwarts’ school year starts in September… 😉

Hello all.

For those of you who have built and run the new trains, what do you think of the new plastic, decoupled wheelsets? I am in the US and the new trains have not yet been released.

Using the standard 40-stud curve, my older trains slow down considerably since the inner and outer wheel angular velocities would prefer to be different but cannot be due to the coupled wheels (no differential in trains!).

This makes me hope that the curve-induced friction will reduce due to the decoupled wheelset approach.

On the other hand, the old wheelsets were a combination of plastic housing and a steel rod, which had a relatively low friction coefficient. I suspect that the plastic housing / plastic rod friction coefficient might be higher.

Thanks!

it seems to be more or less to be the same imho. You get reduced friction by way of the decoupled axles, but add it right back because the axles are now plastic. The material used for the newer train wheels feels like the same thats used for the rollercoaster sets’ wheel&axle combo.

That second picture looks awesome. I love how everything is smoothed out like that.

SD

got some old ideas for Budd Metroliner(cool shape and sides) but decided to put it to other use.
For me new train got really cool ideas(shape and colour) and thanks to god brick built nose! easy to make designs for 8w not strictly to 6w

Finished the passenger express train yesterday. Really enjoyed building it.

+ brick build nose

+ nice doors

+ battery box can be easily removed

+ like the lime / black color

+ quite long

+ lights included

+ reinforced plate part 4025 (plate from 60197 broke few days before because of an terrible accident )

+/- only 9 different sticker

+/- new wheels have to be tested on my track but seems ok

- the roof of the waggons can not completely be removed, the middle part remains on the waggon

My ideas for modification of this train

Pretty cool mod I like how you linked the cars in a fluid way that leaves no gaps. Maybe it would be more realistic to change the color from LBG to DBG.
