Ten Questions with...Tamara Damarjian, Agents Boss

Since Agents is a new theme for LEGO, I thought it would be great to interview someone who really knows what these Agents are all about. So let me introduce Tamara Damarjian, Brand Manager for Agents in North America, otherwise known as Agent T1. - Tim K

TK: Hi Tamara, and welcome to the Inner Circle!

TD: Thank you, I feel honored!

TK: The big news for LEGO this summer is the Agents theme. Why did LEGO pick a theme like that?

TD: Well, we always want to have something new for LEGO fans, but the whole idea of a secret agent/spy theme is something we thought kids would like because there are a lot of cool looking models and minifigures that could be designed. We also wanted something that would be unlike the other themes we have. Agents is different because there are a bunch of missions that take place around the world, like a rescue in the Pacific Ocean or retrieving a vital treasure map in the Amazon rainforest.

TK: I took a look at some of the sets in the lobby - wow - a ton of new vehicles and it looks like a lot of secret compartments and gadgets are in this line. What's your favorite?

TD: That's tough because they each have something unique that makes them awesome, but the Turbo Car (#8634) would have to be my most favorite because there's technology built into the gate to make the alarm go off when the car comes crashing through it. I also like the hidden missiles in the front and back, and Spy Clops is my favorite bad guy character because he's so ugly.

TK: Awesome. How many new minifigure characters are there?

TD: Hang on, I have to count... ok, there are 4 Agents and 6 bad guys. That doesn't include the special set that Toys 'R' Us® is coming out with (the Volcano Base), which will include two new bad guys only offered in that set. Target® will also have a special set called the Deep Sea Quest that will include another unique bad guy called Slime Face... he's really slimy looking!

TK: Slime's cool! So, what is it these agents are up to, is there any unclassified info you can share with us? Are they good guys, bad guys, or are they still trying to decide?

TD: Since I'm an Agent myself, I can't share all the secrets, but I can tell you that evil Dr. Inferno has sent his henchmen out to do evil things around the world, like steal gold bars from an ancient temple. It's up to Agent Chase and his team to track them down, infiltrate and retrieve, then escape without the bad guys knowing. The Agents are dressed and equipped for whatever comes their way, but the missions aren't easy. The henchmen are armed and dangerous, and there are obstacles along the way. It's up to you how each mission plays out!

TK: Tell me about the web site - anything new to report in that world?

TD: We're right now developing the site, which will include a multi-leveled game. It's going to launch in August, but if anyone wants a sneak peak of it, we'll have the first level (or shall I say mission) live soon!

TK: Some of these kids liked the Alpha Team theme. What's the difference between that and the new Agents?

TD: If they liked Alpha Team, they'll LOVE Agents! It's way better! I mean, there is good and evil and a lot of vehicles and action like Alpha Team, but the story is different. Alpha Team took place in an icy climate and there wasn't one clear mission, whereas Agents is all about different missions and settings around the world. Because of this, there are more features and gadgets in the sets, like the laptop and the alarmed gate in the Turbo Car set. Plus, there are more colors in the Agents sets, and I think that's a good thing!

TK: OK, tell us a secret - what other names were we thinking about for this theme?

TD: To be honest, we actually wanted to keep it simple so people will immediately understand what it is, so we didn't look at too many other names.

TK: Are there any more sets coming out later this year?

TD: We've got 6 sets that will be available everywhere by August 1, plus the two special sets I mentioned earlier. Then we have 5 more coming next summer (the sequel!).

TK: Great! Where can we get our hands on these sets and when?

TD: Right now they're available at Toys 'R' Us and on LEGO.com, but by August they'll be available everywhere. For the UK and Ireland members, you can get sets in the middle of July at LEGO Shop at Home and Woolworth's®.

TK: OK, Tamara, last question. Who was your favorite James Bond?

TD: Roger Moore because he was in the most movies and brought a whole new look to Bond when he started, but I like Sean Connery also because he was the first actor to play Bond. I also like him for the way he translated the character. With that, I must go! This interview will destruct in 10 seconds!

Thanks for the news Deinonychus. At least we have a better idea of release dates now.

And there's definitely a second wave. Yays!

Target/ TRU exclusives for 8636/ 8637 though? They're always a pain to track down *Sigh*

Thanks for the new Deino! I'm overjoyed we get five sets next year, as this is one of my favourite themes ever (and prompted me to watch all 21 bond films again). Good to see they are keeping the story loose, and I love the description of Slime Face, and the preferences of the makers. Maybe a Lego Agents Videogame is next? :oh:

I can't quote the whole post because it's too big but I like the fact that the release date is 10th-20th July for UK and Ireland!!!

Damn... If only these sets were cheaper. Must... Have... Clone Wars Sets ! :cry_sad:

I'm just speculating, but the middle of July could also be when Clone Wars and Bionicle sets come out as well :sing::sing::sing:

I HOPE SO :fingers crossed:

Thanks for binging us the interview, Deino. I'm relived to see that another 5 are coming out in 09, but a Target exclusive?! Oh man, that'll be tough to get a hold of, and it'll probabaly be way to pricey.

Thankee, Deino.

Couldn't have summed it up better myself. This is why Agents wins and alpha team FAILS.

And yes, a second wave next year!. It was inevitable, considering how awesome these sets are (should sell a ton). Can't wait! :sweet:

What about the Bionicles ?

Nobody is sure yet when they are coming out. One BZP member posted in a topic on there that his local TRU may have gotten boxes of the Mistika in, but there's been no word on it since. Only time will telll...

Now this is just my educated guess...

For the past several years Target has had an endcap display around Christmas time of sets at the $50 US pricepoint. Since the Dep Sea Quest set is their exclusive, and it looks about the size of a $50 set, I'd wager that is the price it'll be. deino2.gif

Thanks for pointing this out, Deino. Well, this certainly is interesting, I can't wait to get a good look at the new figs, they're one of the best things in this line, and their names are... really... creative... (yes, that was sarcasm.)

Still, what was his name? Slime Face? He should be interesting to see. I wonder if we'll be getting a female villain?

Thanks again Deinonychus. :sweet:

Yes, Slime Face. FYI, there will be a female villain, her appearance has been mentioned in numerous topics, a evil woman with a mechanical arm like Dr. Inferno, going by the name of Claw-Dette. She was first shown in the "Pics of the Agents line" topic. Here's a picture of Claw-Dette:
