Geihlen Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 (edited) Once again I will preface my post by saying that I think this build is incredibly impressive, and I think that all the tweaks I can see in your latest update were for the best. I'm really glad you decided to post this as a WIP as it's a blast to watch it evolve. I also just happened to stumble upon the builder Vieral over on Flickr and it looks like he took a crack at a YT-2000 about a decade ago. While techniques and part availability have changed radically since then, I think his build is pretty slick. I also think his and yours are roughly the same scale. The cockpit seems to imply that, anyways. The reason I bring this up is his cockpit piece is mounted basically flush to that first...ring(?) I guess, which I like since it shortens that area a bit. The cockpit piece is kind of tough one since the shape isn't 1:1 but I wonder how it would look if the section behind yours was another brick shorter. Alternatively, have you thought about a built approach to get more of the stubbiness present in the line art? Not to hit on this point again (or imply I think your solution is bad) but what about the brick built cylinder solution for the escape pod areas (specifically, replacing the large round corner bricks)? Does that just mess with your whole plan for that area? If they worked As someone who has nitpicked and agonized over accuracy on my own project of much smaller scale, I don't envy the task you've given yourself though again, it's looking fantastic so far. Wow - so someone did try - didn't really come out and call it - He certainly did a great job attempting - brick shapes have changed for sure. Would be curious to see if you can poke him and have him take a look here at my attempt. Currently my build is measuring in at 23-24" by 32-33" there abouts and about to crest 6000 pieces. He went full brick on majority of his builds from what I can see - where as I tried to get more true shapes out. The changes your pointing too such as the cockpit and cargo hatch - don't change the overall structure at all if very minimal - its more of a preference in design change or look. Happy to take suggestion on using alternate bricks - but my options tended to be limited to non-existence of part I want or the color won't work as they don't make im in "that" color - dark blue-grey I think? The source of my headaches is the Dome/Saucer sections - changing those restructures the mandible up to the rear portion of the ship. Center section I can mess with to a point without much to worry about. But its getting very busy in there as I reinforce structure and get ready to cap the domes with the dual cannon turrets. The Engine array platting is not going to look that great to the drawing let alone other examples - but as you already pointed out - its looking impressive as it is. Sorry If im not making sense - and your feedback is wonderfully welcome. Quote
Kage Goomba Posted January 13, 2022 Author Posted January 13, 2022 Reached out to him and gave credit where credit is due. Lets hope our 2012 Otana builder is still around and look's in on my monster project. Quote
Kage Goomba Posted January 13, 2022 Author Posted January 13, 2022 (edited) Bricklink finally got my missing part sorted. It was kind of funny - I could see the part on their DB's/Lists - but it was missing from Stud.io - they cited that it wasn't finalized or something was off in the LDD DB - but the guy was nice enough to give the raw file to me to insert into the model. Took a while to get it done - but they got it done none-the-less - also fixed their instructions too hehe. Now its REALLY looking like the Otana. :D PS: yes its not looking transparent - but the part number is valid and will be transparent when you buy it - in theroy lol. Kage Goomba Posted January 14, 2022 Author Posted January 14, 2022 (edited) Just prototyped a design for a "concealed gun port" for the Otana's Ion Cannon and Laser Cannon. If its sound (have a friend of mine checking it out) - I'll be able to install it on the model. The UCS Falcon as it turns out has one - but its got no hatch. Just-like-the-falcon from the movies. I didn't like what lego chose to do - so spent hours googling today only to realize - there's this one speciaallllll brick that happens to be just riiiiiight. Ideally - Hatch should be closed when not in use - and when in use it slides open - gun drops out - pew pew pew zap zap zap (ion cannon) *see below giphy for awesome example* :) Stay tuned. How ironic that my little brainstorm is essentially the same lol. I stand corrected. :) Quote
Kage Goomba Posted January 15, 2022 Author Posted January 15, 2022 The Otana will have a retractable Laser Canon and a retractable Ion Canon - I successfully managed to design a model that will do the job. With a sliding hatch. Just need to do a little polish and cleaning on the overall structure and fine tuning. The Oval"syndrome" i keep complaining about may make it look awkward - but I'll make it work. I just barely had enough space to fit it - and didn't compromise the structure at all. Quote
Guyinaplaguemask Posted January 15, 2022 Posted January 15, 2022 This is going to be really cool to see Quote
Kage Goomba Posted January 16, 2022 Author Posted January 16, 2022 Little sneak peak at my cannons. The blue one is the Ion Cannon - the other is the Laser Cannon - likening to the "Ground Buzzer" - both have a 2 long stud gap with a sliding hatch. both of these obviously are on the underside of the Ship. Ran into some issues however - may need to put a spacer on the axel/shaft if it drops too low - and I can't attach the "roof plate" on the cargo hatches to the main core as its off by a millimeter - gotta love the laws of stud spacing. It's not a terrible concern as its rather secure in its own right - was just hopping to reinforce that way. Waiting on Kdapt's feedback to see if it "really fits" - but I have to say - its coming along nicely. I'm open to suggestions on shaping the Ion Cannon - there's not much to pick from imagery wise other than the famous ginormous ion cannon on Hoth. May change laser cannon side - want to be able to put an LED on each of these. :D Quote
Guyinaplaguemask Posted January 16, 2022 Posted January 16, 2022 I feel like the ion cannon looks a bit cartoonish, slimming it down would go a long way, possibly using technic prices as opposed to bricks and plates. Quote

Ion Cannons tend to give me the impression they have significantly more hardware than an atypical laser canon. But yeah..I may slim it down...feel free to suggest different shapes.designs. Quote

Kage Goomba Posted January 26, 2022 Author Posted January 26, 2022 Not dead yet - just stuck on how I'm going to drop the turret domes on the model. Currently taking a breather working on the "UCS Tumbler" (Dark Knight Trilogy) for grins and giggles. Feel free to offer suggestions/feedback folks. Stay tuned - not giving up - not by a long shot. Kage Goomba Posted February 1, 2022 Author Posted February 1, 2022 (edited) I still alive and still working on this. I've got the starting of the Turret - but I kind of did a boo boo. What you guys call an "illegal" build - not in the sense parts are bogus - but the fact it can't be taken apart...at least obvious enough to me. Need some suggestions on not having this situation. This is the Mount portion of for the Turret - there will be 2 on each side - the top and bottom. I've set it up that it would self align and be easy as possible to install with a capped rod. Lift arm drops in the hole - you shove the axel in - bang - locked in. But as you can see - its not something one can take apart...easily..at least I'm worried. comments? suggestions? <poke @Kdapt-Preacher > Edited February 1, 2022 by Kage Goomba Quote

With the axle passing all the way through the block like that, what stops you from just pushing it back out from the other side? Quote

(the picture) Oh, I see--the two 5L liftarms, right? As long as you have a full stud of space in between them (which you do), you shouldn't have any problem pulling them back out (as long as you can physically fit your finger in there, anyway, which you ought to be able to unless you have hands like a gorilla). If you're worried about it, you could attach those parts from the outside with any of the Pin 3L variants, so you can pull the pins back out directly. Quote

Kit Bricksto Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 The only issue I see with the setup you've got here is that I don't think you will be able to put those liftarms in the middle in with blue 3L technic pins like that. I don't think it is possible to get the blue pin into the 4x6 technic brick like that at all. Or am I misinterpreting something in the picture? Quote

Thanks to Kdapt - its actually rather brilliant - The 2L side of the pin is on the inside - leaving the 1L side outside - so you pull the liftarm (which is just a nice cover) and you can pull the pins likening to a set of jenga blocks. Once you remove the entire assembly - you can start to disassemble from bottom to the top and remove all components. Theoretically - certainly was better than it was before. Quote
Guyinaplaguemask Posted February 1, 2022 Posted February 1, 2022 Still having trouble working out how the turret will be mounted, but I like gun turrets, so this will be interesting for me. Quote
