Oh_Hi_Mao Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 So new picture was leaked? Is the crane different from the leaked box earlier? Quote
HydroWorld Outlook Posted June 4, 2023 Posted June 4, 2023 (edited) $700 for just 2,882 pieces? That's crazy for a Technic set. You could buy two full Mindstorms kits for $700. If this set had triple that parts count, then a $700 price tag would make a bit more sense, but even so it would still be overpriced, especially considering the giant Control+ flagship sets that cost $450, so I hope that's not this set's official price. If that is the set's actual price, then the final model better show some very, very strong justification for it, or there's a lot of people on this forum who won't be purchasing it, including myself. That's what practically everyone has said on this thread numerous times already. We'll just have to wait and see what's in the box before making final judgement. Though I have to say that people on this forum are very marginal segment of buyers from TLG's point of view. Whatever our collective opinion, it's going to matter very little in grand scheme of things - maybe the Liebherr will be grossly overpriced but maybe many people will still buy it and that's enough justification for TLG to continue with such overpricing. An interesting aspect to think about is the pricing of the 42160 Audi set, as that contains more electronic components for 170 EUR / $180 than we expected. No other Control+ sets had 3 motors and a hub under the 200 EUR / USD limit, not even before the price increases. Even 42099 (that was considered to be a great parts pack) with a similar amount of parts was launched at $250 which would be almost $300 today. This means the electronic parts alone cannot justify that massive price tag, it'll be very interesting to see what is hidden in that box that can convince customers who see the two 2023 Control+ sets side by side. Yeah, it's obvious that simply having two hubs and 6-8 motors isn't going to be nowhere nearly enough to justify the price so I'm also expecting something new and interesting. Though the price of 600€+ is such that I don't think I'll buy it no matter what's in the box - it's just too expensive. But I'll reserve the judgement on if it's worth the money for when it's officially revealed. Quote

arijitdas Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 (edited) For some reason, I have a feeling that Lego might choose to skip this set completely or this set might again go through a redevelopment thereby delaying it once again after having seen the massive crane released by Mould King. Skipping/Canceling it is an easier option for Lego as was done with the Boeing V-22 osprey set 42113. Edited June 5, 2023 by arijitdas Quote

Umm.. of course they are, they're after all a company which aims for profit, and to get profit they must cover their costs with the selling price of their products. I hope nobody has been misled to believe that TLG as whole is some sort of charity. Quote

After all, they'll have to earn back the costs that went into developing this one. Also, cancelling the set would help the competition sale more of their cranes. :) So, from a TLC perspective, as far as I can see, cancelling the set sounds like a very dumb idea. Quote

Very dumb ideas seem to be TLG's stock-in-trade as of late, considering CON+TROLL, the elimination of B-models, and the Osprey debacle. Quote

Its not due to some protests but due to the fact based on some earlier rumors that this set had to go back to design and development once last year as the original design was considered to be too large and unstable (again as claimed in some previous rumors). And now that we have a massive crane release by the knock off brands, they will need to either send it back for redevelopment a 2nd time or slash the price. Also, the delay is only causing a lot of hype to be created around this set and I hope the final product if and when released stands up to that hype. Quote

I think this is a plausible hypothesis, though only based on rumours. If the leaked photo of the box is anything to go by, I wouldn't be surprised to see it going back to the drawing table, as it's really not what this kind of set should look like. No idea though, how they would solve the supposed stability issues and such. Quote

And Mould king don't care about it. Actually I didn't bought it because it is too large (no space to store it) and has not enough counterweight to work properly. So in my opinion Lego does not need to match size of a competitor set - they need to make it stable. 9 minutes ago, Maaboo35 said: Very dumb ideas seem to be TLG's stock-in-trade as of late, considering CON+TROLL, the elimination of B-models, and the Osprey debacle. nerdsforprez Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 I do believe we have fallen into obscurity again here. I keep logging on seeing activity on this thread expecting new information only to hear gripes again about the pricing. Lets not to this again for the billionth time. If there is credible information that the set has been cancelled/postponed again fair enough, but to just throw this out there with no evidence to actually suggest this is not needed. We run the risk of this being a locked thread until there is actual information. Quote

nugnug115 Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 was there a new leaked pic of the final model ? ive only seen the pic of it on the box and it was super fuzzy and the crane was super FAT lol ! in this thread i read a few people say the final model has been leaked. Quote

A big crane with a derrick and luffing jib is tricky to assemble and easy to collapse. That can be mitigated a bit with the big molded lattice parts for the boom and including all the various safety stop cylinders in the model but still all you have to do is hook onto something slightly too heavy and it's going to fall down. Or slew it too quickly, drive on a rough surface, have a child pull on the hook or boom, etc. I still think to make it playable to normal TLG standards they are going to have to keep it reasonably small which will make it odd looking and uninteresting to most of the sort of people willing to pay $700+ for toy cranes. Now it does seem likely they will make the main boom, derrick and jib with common parts (as in the photo) so you should at least have the option to build some other simpler boom configuration that would be larger and still reasonably stable which would be nice. But I think anyone expecting a big boom+derrick+jib configuration is going to be disappointed. Quote

At our own risk we can (I guess easily) extend boom and other parts, add more counterweight, etc. I think we will see quite magnificent modifications from a community. Quote
Ondra Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 They will ditch this set after year because of bad sales. 679 euro Its really hard to swallow. Only hardcore afol will see value in this... I seen rc cranes for less with more playability and load, definitely not everything needs lego RC treatment... Quote
HectorMB Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Besides stating the obvious and what it has said thousand times, I think that Lego is doing as Apple, pushing up the prices to reach the highest point, since it would most likely be the highest profit as well. On top, as also said before, besides all our comments here, in terms of business, TLG is doing real good. For me, apart the loss of nostalgia, this is good news. I have a collection (mostly made buying from second hand) which allows me to build a huge number of MOCs with, maybe, buying some spare pieces, and most importantly, have really fun. The new Lego sets are interesting... to see the instructions and learn new stuff, as are most of the MOCs!. So, for me, this is good: Lego seems to know how to drive the business and keep it alive, which means a regular outcome of new pieces, which is what interests me the most, because it will keep also alive the community.
