On top, as also said before, besides all our comments here, in terms of business, TLG is doing real good. For me, apart the loss of nostalgia, this is good news. I have a collection (mostly made buying from second hand) which allows me to build a huge number of MOCs with, maybe, buying some spare pieces, and most importantly, have really fun. The new Lego sets are interesting... to see the instructions and learn new stuff, as are most of the MOCs!. So, for me, this is good: Lego seems to know how to drive the business and keep it alive, which means a regular outcome of new pieces, which is what interests me the most, because it will keep also alive the community. My perception is the quality of the sets and parts is not increasing as much as their profits are. The lack of B Models, the backward step new motor system and repetitiveness of models (supercar series, mid and small size cars with no technical features) plus the reliance on licenced products is gradually draining the DNA from the theme. There could have been a Combine Harvester, a Backhoe digger or a bus of some sort yet we get the same dirge year in year out. Quote

There could have been a Combine Harvester, a Backhoe digger or a bus of some sort yet we get the same dirge year in year out. I think the designers are aware of this feeling, and might even feel it themselves. There always seems to be a pneumatic tow truck, or an airbus helicopter, or a John Deere skidder set that reminds us that Technic can be great again! Bringing things back to the Liebherr I even think this can easily be made great again! The lower main boom is made up of 4 segments of new rectangular truss frames and the upper main boom is made of 3 of these segments, when the proportions of the crane makes it look as though they should be much longer, maybe about 7 segments for the lower boom and 6 segments for the upper boom at a guess. Surely there is room in the 700 euro asking price to include a pair of 3 segment long boom lengths to be added as a load for the crane to lift. Not only would this give us a load to lift but it would also mean that we can add those lengths back in AT OUR OWN RISK, as the instructions wouldn't tell us to add them back in, but we would know that we can just by them being there. If that makes the crane less stable, well tipping over is a real concern for any real life crane operator so that would just make the play experience more realistic! With the simple addition of these two boom lengths the asking price becomes more reasonable. It's an increase of 100 euro of perceived value for about 10 euro extra cost to Lego......probably! As it is, I kinda feel bad for the designer (I think it was Marcus, right?). Of course we should complain about an unreasonably high asking price. But he's put a stellar effort into bringing this crane to us and we only seem to comment on the price. I'm not much of a hugger, but I'd give the guy a hug if it makes him feel better! Quote

All these pneumatics can make it into GOAT set. Same goes with backhoe, where there was pnematic backhoe. I definitely dont remember It was really ago. Or fully functional pneumatic steam trains, or any steam engine run by air. Whats kinda sad, all these cars sell really good here and it seems it doesnt need any real technical miracles to profit. Technic really lost its way. Quote

Racing/cars/motorcycles have always been an integral part of Technic. The truly groundbreaking and innovative sets like 8862, 8868 and 8480 are few and far between, with majority of sets being mediocre or perhaps nice but nothing to write home about. There have also always been better and worse years, 1980's in particular had many bad years. In 1990's almost every year something interesting was released and innovation was really high, but many of those things fell into obscurity soon (like the fiber optic system) and at that time TLG had unsustainable spending habits which would come back to bite them in the turn of the millennium. Today the development of new sets is much more careful and controlled process, which might seem as less innovative but is actually much better in the long run. 7 minutes ago, Ondra said: Lets shill for biggest toy company for doing barebone technic cars in 200 euro price point. I also would like to see more machinery with interesting functions and so on, but apparently those barebone car sets sell really well so I can't really blame TLG for doing them repetitively. But what I can do is choose to not buy them and spend my money only on the interesting sets, like I just did with the Perseverance rover. Quote
Lipko Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 Call me a madman but I like models and real machinery that look good. Usually cars look good, so I'm okay with car models. Especially since parts are evolving thus models (or at least some features) are evolving too. As for profit vs quality: Technic line is just a small portion of the lineup. Quote

That's true, it forces new limits on set design. On the other hand, people seem to be interested in licensed sets and even most MOCs are about recreating real life vehicles so I don't see why TLG shouldn't follow suit. And there's at least few non-licensed sets now and then too, many of which are pretty good. The licenses also force recolours of parts to fill gaps in parts palettes so I don't think there's that much reason to complain. Quote
allanp Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 I'm not sure that having a licence must necessarily have a negative impact on the set from a technical point of view. The McLaren F1 could have had a gearbox, or even better a whole new gearbox system looking like my own concept and been amazing with or without the license. And the best set ever, all hail the mighty Arocs, had a licence. Not saying that having a licence never negatively impacts a set but that it shouldn't have to. But I guess it depends on which license they choose. Tesla cars would be an absolute crap license for a large Technic set (although good for a small pullback or creator), but JCB could be epically good. I mean, we've been hyping the JCB backhoe for how many years now? One hasn't even been announced! Quote

What is, is when the licence is used on sets with no added Technic value, such as Dom´s charger, Top Gear car and the recent shell supercars just to shift units. A full sized backhoe JCB would indeed be an attractive model in the same veign as the Arocs was and so would a Claas combine but it´s like with City - they won´t ever make a farm theme again even though it would be a best seller. nerdsforprez Posted June 22, 2023 Posted June 22, 2023 So is this set dead again? Forgive me but I believe it is only just over a month until the proposed release date and still no information? I am not sure we have had a set go this long with no leaks (or at least nothing further since the last ones) with such a fast-approaching supposed release date. Quote
