aminnich Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 Like most… I’ve been following this thread closely since the official pictures came out. Initially everyone hated the model because of this or that reason. Now it seems like it’s 50/50 on the looks of the model but still 100% hate toward the price. Do you think TLG looks at these conversations? I want to see what the reviews looks like for this set and how many comments there are about the price. Sure they will sell some to the people that don’t know what to do with their money… but what about the rest of us. For $700 I’d rather buy 2 retired 42042 sealed sets on bricklink and combine them into a bigger crane. Overall, if the set was $500/$550 I’d consider getting one or even 2 of them… but for $700 I’ll pass altogether. Quote

But now everyone is talking about the crane because of it's ridiculous price. And when the price will have a ''discount'', some people will consider it as a deal. Well, that said, collectors might be okay with the price. Keep in mind that this an 18+ set, and many sets with this label, including the Eiffel Tower, Ferrari, and Titanic are primarily marketed towards late teenagers and adults who are less likely to care about playability. It costs many hundred dollars to buy a licensed collector's action figure because manufacturers expect that collectors will pay more money for the same item. While I strongly disagree with the price TLG has set for this model, I can only imagine that those same expectations apply here. If people really want the pleasure and comfort of owning the set and experiencing all it has to offer, they'll just have to work that much harder at their jobs so they can cash out the money for it. Honestly, rather than complaining about the direct retail price, I think we'd be better just waiting for the set to go on sale at Amazon or some other outlet. Surely, as we get closer to the 2023 holiday season (which will only be about 4.5 months away when this set releases in the United States), we'll be seeing discounts on this set left and right. And hopefully, once inflation slows down enough for prices to fall (which won't be for a while but will happen) then the cost of this set will be more reasonable. Difference is that the Eiffel Tower, Ferrari and Titanic are good display models. This doesn't even really look like the real thing. Quote

The price is high but had they come out with something realistic looking I would have gotten past the price. I really like cranes, have built lots myself, but I don't see myself ever buying this even at a reasonable discount. It just doesn't appeal to me because I really like cranes. Quote

Even with discount it is not likely to break below the 35% mark, which would put it on par with the CAT’s old retail price of 450€. The most expensive LEGO i bought was the Liebherr excavator at 310€, and i managed to get a very good deal on the CAT before the price hike at about 250€. I am not willing to pay 450€+ on the newest flagship when the previous one is in a way lower price bracket. I find the discounted price offensive to even consider on a single lego set. The high asking price sets considerable expectations, the crane even if pretty despite it’s many inaccuracies just does not meet. Quote
Akbalder Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 It's often possible to find the technic sets at -45% but even at 375€ it would be far too expensive. It's not worth more than 250€. Quote

Paul B Technic Posted July 3, 2023 Posted July 3, 2023 I am 100% not buying this set but I am still keen to read the first review and see how good or bad it really is. The price could be accepted IF it was the perfect set. Quote
mdemerchant Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Has anyone else noticed the new lattice pieces that are used to connect the sides of the boom? The 7x17(19?) frames making up the sides seem to have gotten all the attention and I hadn't seen them until looking at the hi-res photos on lego.com just now. They're vaguely like a 5x11 frame except longer with mostly very thin walls on the long side so they practically disappear except for the diagonal elements and the connection points. While I still think the crane generally looks odd, the combination of the two new frames is a nice way to make sturdy booms so long as you are happy with 7x7 cross section in yellow. Won't be ideal for proper scale models where boom, derrick and jib aren't all the same size but it would be ok for a lot of builds. Seems like a good solution for a generic crane when they become available to buy separately. Quote

I've seen those as well, they look like 15x5 H frames with diagonal links in the middle for reinforcement, and the longer sides have thinned walls. It seems that they were really trying to save weight here, otherwise they would have probably made it a more reusable part (no thinned walls, more pinholes instead). So probably even at this size, that's what's required for safety/stability. Quote

It's interesting how these two frame types are used. They seem to be assembled with a 1-stud offset into individual box sections, which are then joined together using axles. I guess that is perhaps reflective of the real thing? Of course the boom would be much stiffer if they were offset by more like half their length. allanp Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Would those frames be any lighter than if they had the usual hollowed out full beams instead of these seemingly solid half beams? Maybe they are not solid. But maybe it's not for weight reduction but to make the corners look slimmer? Quote

It should be significantly lighter. Quote

der_luda Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Found a reputable dealer today, which is already going for 489.90 in advance. I actually set myself a limit of 450..460, thought it would take 2..3 months. But I pre-ordered it right away Quote

The lattice pieces can be used for the main mast, and the ballast can be used partly for the main mast at the bottom and partly for the counter-ballast in the swinging part Quote

Certainly not trying to justify the high price but to me the electronic components alone are worth that much, not saying I am even going to buy this set either but I am going to check out a few reviews before I make a final decision. Also will be interested to see how easy it will be to extend the boom to a slightly more realistic scale. It is definitely a high price to pay for LEGO and if I do buy it, I want to be sure of my decision. 3 hours ago, 1gor said: Sorry to admit, but both frames are useless for ne because of those reinforcements And then there is me, I feel like such a specialized piece is long overdue and will be glad to get my hands on a few, I just hope they won't be hard to get or worse, ridiculously expensive.
