Darkdragon Posted February 11, 2022 Posted February 11, 2022 Check out the Full Wave of reviews! Set information Set Name: Luigi’s Mansion™ Lab and Poltergust Set Number: 71397 Number of Pieces: 179 Theme: LEGO Super Mario Year Release: 01/2022 Prices: £21.99 / $29.99 / 24.99€ (Euro prices may vary) @Lego US https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/luigi-s-mansion-lab-and-poltergust-expansion-set-71397 @Brickset https://brickset.com/sets/71397-1/Luigi-s-Mansion-Lab-and-Poltergust Box & Contents Standard size box for this price range, even though the number of actual parts is pretty small. The back of the box shows some of the play features of the set. This set has three numbered bags which are all complete mini builds of their own, so if you want to share with a helper this is a great set to divide and build at the same time. The booklet that is included with the set is not instructions but a small catalog for the rest of the current sets. You will need the app to follow instructions, that's how it is meant to be used. For most sets, however, you can find the PDF instructions over at LEGO Service. The Build Not a bad build overall. Each bag has complete builds in it and at the end bag 3 has plates to tie everything together. Bag 1 - Gold Ghost This guy is BRIGHT. My camera had some serious color correction issues because of the light these parts threw around. It was pretty unbelievable A nice solid build though, this a great use of snot bricks and tiny slopes. Bag 2 - Poltergust & Professor E. Gadd Here we have the meat of the set, the Poltergust! It is a new outfit for Luigi (or Mario) and of course does not come with the character. I have included Luigi in some of my photos because the Poltergust is very unwieldy without his hand to hold the pipe. This bag also contains the doctor which is adorable, I love that little white flame as hair. Bag 3 - Laboratory and Level Bag 3 may look like a jumble of random parts but there are a few minibuilds here. There's the maching you see behind the ghost and the lab tools and potions area. Many of the parts are for connecting all the various areas to make a small level. Characters Play Features There are not a ton of play features with this set, but there is the Poltergust and the Gold Ghost as well as a start area for the level. When you put the new outfit on Luigi the computer recognizes what it is and that opens up the abilities to gust the ghosts and put them in the machine at the end of the level. Conclusion A fun set and a fun new outfit for your Mario or Luigi to go fight some ghosts! With it's fairly low price point, this is a great little set to add some ghost hunting to your Super Mario levels. Score Design: 8/10 There are 2 characters and the new outfit. The Poltergust has a new element for the backpack and overall it's a great design. The doctor is cute and the ghost is well designed with snot and slopes. Parts: 7/10 The parts are good for Super Mario, as far as parts you might use for a moc there are not many. The Poltergust parts have some very specific large mold parts that would take a mocing genius to figure out how to use anywhere else. Build: 8/10 The ghost was a fun little build and so was the machine. Overall I thought the build was good for a set in this range. Playability: 8/10 This is a playable level for Luigi with the new ability to capture ghosts! There is not a ton going on here but it is decent. Price: 8/10 For a small playable set in this theme, the price makes sense. If you are into the theme or the characters it is definitely a good one. Like most sets in the theme, it is priced too high just to buy for parts. Overall: 39/50 Quote
Redhead1982 Posted February 14, 2022 Posted February 14, 2022 Thanks for the review. I'm not convinced with this set. I like some of the Mario sets, but mostly for the interesting parts selection. Here, I was surprised to see the new element as a backpack/vacuumer. It's fit for Mario, but feels a bit Duplo given the size. Would be interesting to see it used somewhere else. Quote
MKJoshA Posted February 14, 2022 Posted February 14, 2022 I love all the new molds here! Not enough for me to get this set, but it certainly has me searching Bricks and Pieces. Quote
