Part of what got me into LEGO Technic years ago was an interest in designing a MOC of Lamborghini's original Aventador, the LP700-4. After a lot of procrastination, I've finally started on it.

aventadortop

I'm not 100% happy with the chassis and I put compromises in so that I could test the fit and scale of various components. This will be a 1:10 scale model and it's my intention to implement a modified version of the gearbox from the Pimp my Lamborghini Project (https://rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-46782/jb70/42115-pimp-up-my-lamborghini/#details). I also intend on implementing some form of pushrod suspension for the front + back wheels and the original air brake system.

aventadorUnder

There are a lot of things I like about the current gearbox, but there are significant space limitations I need to take into account. The gearbox may need to be redesigned but right now it fits nicely in the chassis. I'm currently having a challenge implementing the DNR and gear shifters in the small space.

aventadorRear

I'm very happy with the rear suspension as it is compact, to-scale, and captures a lot of the aspects of the Aventador's pushrod-style suspension.

rearCompress

I've designed it to have more travel than a supercar normally would because I prefer it that way for Technic models.

aventadorSteering

The front suspension is a mess of compromises to keep height down since at this scale I have 1 or 2 studs more at most before I hit the hood. Here there are many more challenges before I'd consider it done. I haven't found a 100% perfect solution yet, but I have managed to maintain my height limit by expanding laterally.

aventadorFront

I'm having trouble designing a steering rack with a good geometry, but the current version is adequate for now.

frontCompress

The mechanism is very similar to the rear suspension, only it has been flattened and widened to accommodate steering and front wheel drive. I might be tempted to raise the height by a stud, but I'd have to begin on front fenders to see what the height limit will be. Steering is wonky but adequate for now.

YES YES YES YES. I have never clicked on a topic faster. The LP700 is my favorite car in existence! I cannot wait to see the finished product on this. Barely anyone does any Aventadors so this will be a good one. The chassis looks good so far, the push-rod suspensions is super accurate as well as the gearbox. Good to see the center diff for 4WD as well.
Will you use the Technic pistons or make your own, I think 1:10 scale doesn't suit this scale but its your choice. Good Luck!

I'm thinking of sticking to the current piston setup, but I always thought that the new pistons from the 42130 would look really nice here. That being said, the $7.88 price on bricks and pieces means that I'll have to wait until this is further along to justify that potential purchase lol

If you don't need to have the new design without the slots, you could always pick up the clear blocks they used in the '90s on Bricklink, which are pretty much identical and dirt cheap:

Not sure I follow what you are referring to.  The pistons used in 42130 are the same ones that have been used for the last billion years for Technic.....

Whoops I read pistons and for some reason thought shock absorbers. But yeah I tried to put a V12 in the model a while ago and it doesn't look like it will fit, so I might have to use one of the smaller layout like the one from the Corvette set.

That's kind of funny! I read pistons, and assumed you meant the clear engine blocks that have been reappearing, including in 42130. The 42130 shock is pretty cool, and very stiff, but large.

  I thought as much

A promising start to an ambitious project!

The suspension looks great and seems to work well, although I whish to see the shock absorbers on the front axle closer together, similar to the rear axle. I hope it's one of the aspects why you are not yet considereing it to be the ''100% perfect solution''.

Great job on the gearbox too! I am concerned about it's size and the concequences for the interior. I am curious too see if you can compact it down by a few studs. I'd reccomend checking out some other gearbox designs, e.g. Anto's 'ultra compact gearbox' which includes neutral and reverse and saves you the effort of squeezing in an external DNR switch.

Good luck!

Very nice! Your note about the challenge of fitting everything into the allotted space really resonates with me! I find the art of finding the combination of components that performs a function and fits into a given space a satisfying challenge.

Yeah I agree completely, I just built Anto's gearbox and it works great. Now I need to decide whether it's worth the effort to attempt to modify it to include a center differential. It doesn't seem like the real Aventador gearbox has one, so I might stick with his original design

Maybe the gearbox could be shrunk a tiny bit because I recently figured out a use for the new 12 and 20 tooth spur gears, they can mesh with the 16 tooth side of the 4L centre differential much like this old part and the 16 tooth gear.

On the other hand maybe it does not make much difference.

I had a similar idea when I attempted to make a custom gearbox for this MOC:

grbx5grbx1

In earlier versions, a grey 16-tooth selector gear meshed directly with the center diff. I'm not too experienced with lego gearbox planning, so I could never get it to work how I wanted. I wonder whether anyone other than Crowkillers has attempted to design a gearbox that meshes at both ends of the center differential..

4/2/23 Update:

Ive taken advice from people here and re-designed the front suspension and gearbox. Im using Anto's 7+R design which fits in very well. The new setup is sturdier, more compace, and cleaner:

Im really pleased with the front suspension. It's much more compact and sturdy:

The steering rack and gear is also closer to the wheels and partially hidden in the front axle:

It didn't took long :)

lol I was spending too much time on my 4runner moc when I was suddenly hit with inspiration for a new front axle design
