Squeaker Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 CONSPIRACY!!! No, just kidding. I think the 50 year aniversary is for the LEGO brick. I am not sure what that set contains... Windows and doors, but of what type and are they LEGO system? The file it is under is accesories... did LEGO ever make windows and doors... for real houses? ! I am getting ahead of myself. The 50th might be for the modern LEGO brick... Further investigation shows that this set, released in 1858, has the newer non-slotted bricks and the tubes system. But after further investigation on sets in 1957, other sets have the stud and tube design. Then I found this. The LEGO history began in 1932 in Denmark, when Ole Kirk Christansen founded a small factory for wooden toys in the unknown town of Billund in the south of the country. To find a name for his company he organized a competition among his employees. As fate would have it however, he himself came up with the best name: LEGO – a fusion of the Danish words “LEg” and “GOdt” (“play well”). Barely 15 years later Christiansen discovered plastic as the ideal material for toy production, and bought the first injection moulding machine in Denmark. His courage, input and investment paid off: in 1949 he developed the LEGO brick prototype, which continues to excite countless children and adults to this very day. Over the years he perfected the brick, which is still the basis of the entire LEGO game and building system today. Of course there have been small adjustments in shape, colour and design from time to time, but today’s LEGO bricks still fit bricks from 1958. So the 50th was of bricks that fit together. I also heard here that that church earlier mentioned wasn't ABS plastic, but something else. Anyone else have anything to add? Quote
CP5670 Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 (edited) There is no set of my number. If I take it backwards though, I get the Aerial Recovery. Excellent set except for the tiny rotor, which is easy to modify. I always loved that Res-Q color scheme. So the 50th was of bricks that fit together. I also heard here that that church earlier mentioned wasn't ABS plastic, but something else. Anyone else have anything to add? Lego was made of a different plastic called cellulose acetate until 1963. It was apparently much more prone to discoloring over time than ABS. Edited June 28, 2008 by CP5670 Quote

Shoc Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 So the 50th was of bricks that fit together. Not exactly... It was the 50th anniversary of Lego bricks how they still look today. My dad has Lego older than 1958, the bricks are similar, but they have no tubes in them, and have slits in the sides. They fit together with new ones! :skull: Quote
Shadows Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 So the 50th was of bricks that fit together. I also heard here that that church earlier mentioned wasn't ABS plastic, but something else. Anyone else have anything to add? Right. 1958 was the addition of tubes. It was also the year they stopped printing locally translated boxes and began simply branding them as LEGO. The instructions were still divided by country, but they began trying to write less so they could make fewer instruction variations. That's pretty much why instructions are all visual, plus it works better for the product. As for the 50th... Honestly, they keep finding new anniversaries because the whole early process happened over the course of several years, so there may be more anniversaries coming up, it wouldn't surprise me. 48th anniversary of the introduction of purple, or something (no, they didn't do purple back then). From the very beginning, in 1949, they used Cellulose Acetate. In 1963, they switched to ABS for stability and strength. CA warps over time. The slits on the sides of the early bricks were for attaching windows and doors that came with slots, or sliding in post cards and such as picture frames, much like the backdrops used in the Studios sets so many years later. Wow, I never knew that, I though they were just there for... Hmm, I dunno what I thought they were for... Anyway, we're going a bit off topic now. I discovered my number backwards is a simply awesome set: Fire Breathing Fortress! :skull: Quote
