Posted June 14, 20222 yr Hi everyone, Last time I was active here was about 15 years ago, when I as a teenager started messing around with my old lego pirate sets at my parents' house. I shared with you my Black Seas Barracuda-based Triton's Vengeance here, and got a few very helpful tips on how to improve. I'd be lying if I said I have been working constantly on her since, but I have definitely been tweaking and rebuilding her several times whenever I stayed with my parents for more than a few days, and I've had great fun. This community has so many great builders and I have both had fun following all your projects these 15 years and obviously I have.. ahem.. pirated many great tricks and techniques from many of you - some will be very apparent. The least I could do for all the fun I've had is to share some updated pictures of what she's become. Memory lane, this is where we were back in 2007: DSCF0013 by Ulrik Pein, on Flickr Overall the Vengeance is still a BSB-based design, and I have been fibbing wildly between bothering with historical accuracy and just making it cool looking. I knew I wanted more of a mid- to late 16th-century look with a noticeable curve, a tall aftercastle and loads of baroque, garish ornaments, and I also wanted to put as many guns on her as I could fit. Aestethics-wise she takes after the likes of Vasa and Sovereign of the Seas, although of course she's a bit smaller than either of those. I also added the fanged mouth bow from The Flying Dutchman simply because I have always loved that detail. My favorite part of her is still the curved panels from the Divers theme that I use for the lower galleries, they have survived through every iteration of this ship so far. June 14, 20222 yr Governor So the main difference is the wallpaper? Or 15 years later camera technology has improved sufficiently to capture the detail in the same wallpaper.

June 14, 20222 yr Author Nicely spotted, those are indeed different wallpapers! Can't take any credit for them though, but I could get my mother on the line if there are any other questions about them :)

I would suggest that you visit @NODFlickr account HERE. He has done some amazing Galleon designs over the last year and you could do very well to study his builds as they will inspire far more better ideas than our words in comments here. From my part I have only suggestion when this moves from Work-in-Progress to finished build, that you really consider making final photo-shot session somewhere where you have white wall in the background. If that is not an option, try hanging big white sheet. It looks like this is going to be beautiful real-build galleon and it deserves that little extra effort.
June 18, 20222 yr Now that the color scheme has been changed, will it travel under the same flag for the same faction as before? I like that you still use the yellow submarine corner panels (part 30079) for the bay windows. Great parts use there!
July 2, 20222 yr Woah, this looks amazing! It really gives me those old pirate sets combined with modern and I'm loving it! Makes me want to build a Galleon like this too!

July 3, 20222 yr Author Thanks for all the kind replies! I was able to visit my parents again last week and add more rigging and some temporary sails. I took some more photos, sadly I was unable to set up a proper photo session with a background but I moved the ship outside for more and natural lighting. If you want to work a little on sails, you can always have them immersed in colourless glue&water solution, that's how some ship-modellers do it. After that the sails are still bendable, but retain that stiff nice looking shape. Best thing is to iron them first, or even better, try it first on a spare piece of cloth if you are interested.

They are made from some old bedsheets I found in the shed, material wise they are actually pretty good I think :) They are wrinkly and crinkly from laying around for five years between builds, they were also made for a slightly smaller version of the ship that has since been dismantled so the dimensions are off. Thanks for the feedback! I will absolutely look into improving the sails, as well as adding more rigging, what's on now is the minimum amount for me to consider her sail/photo worthy. One thing that the pictures don't show is that she is incredibly fragile, some of it comes from not being built from a particular plan or design and many redos and workarounds still in place. I try to avoid buying more bricks as there is already so, so much Lego left from my childhood, but it's not sorted and I've had to "mine" each brick from four very large unassorted containers. Needless to say that means she's grown in very uneven spurts with plenty of placeholders and compromises on the way. I only bricklinked a select few parts I knew I didn't have (black flags for gunports, life savers for the wreaths and one extra crow's nest piece). The upper parts of the stern sides (second level of galleries and up) are my least favorite bits, they look a little dodgy both scale and color wise and also fall apart easily when I try to modify them She does have an interior, but it's inaccessible for the same reasons I mention above, so it's only really relevant to me who 'knows' it's there Edited July 9, 20222 yr by Fender Bender
