CrappyMocMaker Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 (edited) Hi everyone! Here's my entry for the create a theme contest. How the theme works + Story For each wave of sets, there would be a tv series or something that it was based on. Each wave focuses on the story of one demigod, and the first wave is centered on Castor, a son of Apollo. The story for this wave is that Castor and his fellow demigods must defeat the mad inventor Daedalus, who has an army of automatons. The long version of the story is this: Spoiler Story (Bolded text means that a set would be based off of it) In the city-state of Crete, King Minos has imprisoned the inventor Daedalus in a laboratory, and is forced to make inventions for Minos. Minos holds Icarus, Daedalus's son, hostage to ensure his cooperation. Daedalus escapes by making wings so he and Icarus can fly away, but Icarus's wings fail, causing him to fall and die. Daedalus blames Apollo, the god of the sun, for melting the wax holding the wings together. He can't take revenge against Apollo directly, so Daedalus makes an army of automatons to kill Apollo's demigod children, so that Apollo can feel the pain Daedalus had when he lost his son. (In the myth, Icarus's wings fall apart because Icarus flies too close to the sun despite Daedalus warning it would kill him. Daedalus understands this in the myth, but in this version Daedalus is in denial that his son died because he failed to listen. Also, Daedalus sacrifices his wings to Apollo in the end, which isn't gonna happen here.) Fast forwarding a couple months, Castor lives alone with his mother in a small village, where he and his mother farm for a living. One day, Castor is attacked by an automaton. He and his mother manage to kill it, but in the process his mother is gravely injured. As she dies, she tells Castor that his father is Apollo, and that he must go to Mount Pelion to be trained by Chiron the centaur. Castor buries his mother, and goes to Mount Pelion, where Chiron's camp is. Although he is welcomed by Chiron, other demigods mock him because he prefers practicing medicine and alchemy to fighting. Meanwhile, Daedalus learns that one of his automatons have been defeated, and sends out scouts to Castor's village to find out what happened. Daedalus traces Castor's trail until Mount Pelion, and prepares to launch an assault. Daedalus unleashes a mechanical bull on the camp, as well as an army of automatons. Although the demigods defeat the bull, many of them are injured, including Chiron. Lia, a daughter of Hephaestus, analyzes the automatons and deduces that they come from Daedalus. She also determines that Daedalus is hiding out in Camicus, a city state in Sicily. Electryon, a son of Zeus, puts together a force of the remaining demigods to attack Daedalus. He orders Castor to stay behind and care for the wounded demigods. Castor tends to the demigods until Chiron wakes up. Then, he experiences a vision warning him that Electryon is falling into a trap. Chiron assures him that he can handle the rest of the demigods, and urges him to rescue Electryon. Chiron gives Castor the relics of Perseus, a helmet of invisibility and winged shoes. (In the myth, Perseus isn't trained by Chiron. When on a quest to kill Medusa, Athena gives him a helmet which can turn invisible and winged shoes. Perseus also gets a shield and sword from under a tree after torturing the information of the shield and sword's whereabouts from three old ladies.) The demigods are using a trireme to get to Sicily, and are attacked by a mechanical serpent. Castor arrives just in time to save them by lighting the serpent with Greek fire. Then, the demigods battle their way through Daedalus's lair, before finally defeating Daedalus, who fights them using a giant mech. And they all lived happily ever after... until I think of a new story. And now for the sets: Automaton Battle Pack (73 pieces including 3 minifigures, $9.99) Comes with a functioning ballista, not too much to say about it. Chiron's Training Grounds (1083 pieces including 5 minifigures, $99.99) Features a cave, dueling area, and small temple. Beware the Automaton Warrior! Seeing as this is a set for kids, I tried to put some play features in: On the left of the cave, there's an infirmary, with a bed and various potions. The roof of the temple can be detached to access the interior. By pulling on one of the red knobs, the platforms can rotate thanks to a rack gear. On the right side of the cave, there is a fireplace and bookcase. The fireplace can light up due to a light brick. It can easily slide out, too. Lastly, by pulling on the other red knob, the bookcase slides away to reveal the relics of Perseus. I hope you enjoyed looking at my wave! Comments and suggestions are appreciated! Mandalorianknight Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 The builds are great, but what I really love is the concept of the automaton villains. They tie into the mythology nicely while still being a unique idea, and make it so the heroes can "kill" the bad guys without it being too violent for lego (since in-house action themes haven't had the protagonists fight "humans" since..what, 2013 castle?) I got the idea from 75334, but I modified it by making a function to move both of the platforms at once. 3 hours ago, Mandalorianknight said: The builds are great, but what I really love is the concept of the automaton villains. Thanks! Originally I was going to make the enemies mechanical Stymphalian birds, but then I decided to use automatons because Daedalus actually made several of them in the myths. Quote
