WesternOutlaw Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Lately, I've been admiring the Space Theme/Mars Mission and want to go out and buy a space set. As I'm not really "up" with the new Mars Mission theme, do any of you have any recommendations? I'd like a mid-range priced set, but really not sure what I should buy. I have been admiring the Recon Drop Ship that looks pretty slick. Any suggestions? Quote
Siegfried Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 The Dropship is a good set; I still haven't broken mine. The claw tank is OK... (You know I don't really like these sort of topics... but I want to encourage you as I'd love to see a haunted space craft from you! ) Quote
Faramir Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I liked the Recon Dropship a lot, but my recommendation would be 7645 Crystal Reaper. Not only has it got tons of accessories, figs, and functions, but it can be easily amped up with motors to reap the jelly out of those jellys Only $50! Review here, in case you want it. Hope I helped! Quote
WhiteFang Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Let WhiteFang help you, if you don't mind. I am not a big fan of Mars Mission, and my recommendation may not be justified based on my selection. Nevertheless, let me go on with my recommendation "if" I were you. Mars Mission theme is a mixture of white and orange for the good guys. While the bad guys has a mixture of green and black. That is their primary color combination. Go for the astronauts instead of the aliens. Why? Because the mini-figure is way much better than the aliens. In addition, the designs for both space-craft and vehicles are much better designed. This is my personal preference, if I were to get a "mid-range" set for MM. This is the only set which had caught my attention since MM was launched. And, my recomendation is the same as yours, the 7692 MX-71 Recon Dropship. Yes, it's sleek and cool. Most importantly, that aircraft is a much better design compared to the rest. I wanted to get this set earlier but due to the hefty price-tag, I delayed my purchase. Now, this set is no longer available in my country anymore. Furthermore, if you had watched Aliens (Alien Part 2), this design reminded me a lot of that dropship that were used to drop Ripley and the rest of the Marines. Yoda did a review earlier, but somehow, I could not view the pictures. I did not paste the link here, because I fear the links to the picture is broken. You can search it in the Space forum. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted July 2, 2008 Author Posted July 2, 2008 (You know I don't really like these sort of topics... but I want to encourage you as I'd love to see a haunted space craft from you! ) The Event Horizon - I don't know... my recommendation would be 7645 Crystal Reaper. Thanks. I've been looking at this set as well. Thanks for sharing the link to the review. I was checking the Index and perhaps I missed it, or the new MM sets aren't listed. I did find Yoda's review earlier today, but the pictures didn't display for me either. I also found an alternate black MOC, but it's all black. Quote
Stony Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 If we're talking Mars Mission, I can't really help you. But I noticed your post said "Space Theme/Mars Mission," so I'd get either something Explorien or something Spyrius. Not sure if I helped much though. Quote
Siegfried Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 The Event Horizon - I don't know... Oh... please don't. That was one of the worst 2 hours of my life. Thanks. I did find Yoda's review earlier today, but the pictures didn't display for me either. Yoda has re-organised his folders. I do have a backup though... Quote

I totally agree. If I ever gave into a LEGO space addiction, the Reaper would be my gateway set. Quote

That was my review, so I'll weigh in here I haven't bought all the Mars Mission sets, but the alien craft generally I've found weak. The dropship has a nice shape but the trans-orange alien containers have put me off it. I did get the 7699 Armored Drilling Unit on sale and like the look of it, but it's really just a technic frame with plates on it. I think the Crystal Reaper wins out as it has a good design, it's about the right size, isn't too pricy and has extra Power Functions. I did notice from other threads that some of last year's MM sets were on sale at US S@H but I think most of those have sold out. Quote
DJ Force Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Oh... please don't. That was one of the worst 2 hours of my life. You should give the Director´s Cut a try. MUCH better. And if it´s still too bad, try Alone in the Dark. You´ll never see a worse movie ever again :skull: As for the question in question... ( ) If it can be either Space or Mars Mission, I´d strongly suggest the Star Justice Set. I recently saw it live in a Lego store and if I weren´t broke at the moment, I would have picked it up instantly. It´s only 70 Euros in Germany, and the box is REALLY heavy. Quote
SuvieD Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Space sets are over rated. Space is not though. You should build your own. $5 on bricklink could get you some great classic ship parts and I am sure you have enough to finish a ship. Even the figures are fairly cheap. I suggest choosing a neon green for windscreen. If you have to buy something, choose something older. Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 Thank you all for the great suggestions. I broke down and purchased the Recon Drop Ship that I've been admiring for some time. I have mixed feelings in regard to the set. Perhaps I'll share some comments as a Classic Space fan. Quote
snefroe Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 ah... so it seems i was too late then to get you into buying some older than MM sets... i've always been very fond of the 'life on mars' trike, the original trike set, not the MM trike, which was basically a reproduced, but less refined/sophisticated model... i guess the dropship isn't that bad, it just doesn't do it for me. In any case, it seems Lego is dropping the MM all together, so if you really want MM sets, now is the time to get them... Quote
DJ Force Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I was very surprised last weekend when I hit my local Toys R Us. The available Mars Mission sets took most of the shelf space, compared to other themes. And the variety of available sets almost got me to buying some. I especially like the new impulse flyer. Perfect for army building. Quote

Perfect for army building. i'm seeing this PF space racer/harvester buggy for the first time... maybe it's time to look for some videoclips of it. if it's really as good as said here it may be worth the effort of getting all the PF parts and the set...
