dotmike Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Not just Perth and not on sale (sadly) but as of yesterday David Jones Miranda (Sydney) have Grand Emporiums on the shelf, $249.99. I can sympathise with the "I really HAVE to buy one now as I'm leaving Sydney today for my home, and don't want to risk waiting for a pre-Christmas sale and having them disappear on me, like the Grand Carousel did. And a s@h order would bump up the RRP with freight anyway. If I lived in a capital city, though, and not a LEGO desertville, I'd wait for the "get ready for Christmas" DJs sale.

How much of a potential discount is there for a pre-Christmas sale? 20-30%? What was last year like?
jamonlego Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 (edited) I was in Myer Brisbane city today - 20% off and they had lots of Harry Potter, city, fire station and the like - they also had set 8214-1: Lamborghini Polizia, which I recall some of you guys were after - 5 sets were on the trolley, in case you want them Edited October 9, 2010 by jamonlego
jonwil Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Just to follow up, the Harry Potter sets are now on the shelf at Target Bull Creek. Also, MYER in Booragoon had HP on the shelf (saw all of them except the Freeing Doby one)
jonwil Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Does anyone know of a place that will sell me a Grand Emporium in USD at something approximating US RRP, ship it to Australia and accept my VISA card? Even with the shipping costs, if I can find someone who can supply it, the record high exchange rate means I can make a fair whack of savings compared to even a potential 20% off at David Jones.
melike75 Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 The guy from Bull Creek target told me that they do have the HP sets but that they aren't on the shelf yet He rummaged around in the boxes and told me that they DID have all 6 sets and that yes, they could sell them to me (he put the 3 small ones on hold since those were the ones I wanted) So to those south-of-the-river looking for HP who cant get to parts north to buy it, go to Bull Creek and ask to speak to someone in the toy section who can then find the items (that's if they havent already put them on the shelf by the time you get there) of person who'd think to ask. I could have had them all by now if i had. I don't even think of it..I'd just assume if they had them they'd be out there. Good to know though, thanks! I'll be heading out there Monday morning..
dotmike Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 How much of a potential discount is there for a pre-Christmas sale? 20-30%? What was last year like? I can't say it is the same every year but I have a memory that in the lead up to Christmas 2008, David Jones had a 25% sale. That was helpful for me as (for a MOC) I bought around six or seven of the 4954 town house (RRP 99.99) and three or four of the 4996 beach house (~ $50), and finding them at DJs was the ultimate goal. (I felt a bit sorry for cleaning some stores out, but only a bit!) I think sales were common that year as it was leading into the GFC and toy buying was suffering. The difficulty with "relying" on a sale for an exclusive is that it can disappear before (or just as) a sale begins - chances are you're not the only one waiting for it. I missed out on the carousel through waiting for a "realistic price". On the other hand, I bought the modular Fire Station as soon as it appeared, but in hindsight I perhaps should have waited, as Myer seems overstocked with them, and they're regularly on sale at 20% + extra 10% MyerOne discount (and some people seem able to get 20% off an already discounted catalogue price, eg, passenger trains for $121, but they are better con men than me: the staff always tell me "not to be combined with any other offer" and I sadly put the box back on the shelf.) Who can say if the Grand Emporium will be in the same position in 2-3 months time...? If it is genuinely exclusive to only DJs, it could be rarer. All that can be said is that most retailers will have sales at some point, and if you can bear the risk of it going out of stock, it would be financially beneficial to wait for a sale and then pounce.

Shipito will redirect from US S@H who will take your visa card. Shipping cost for the modular houses are high though, so I'd instruct them to take it out of the original box. Otherwise some of the US bricklink guys will do this, but most will take paypal (which will take visa). I think Cpt Zuloo did a good bricklink deal for some modulars from the US once, you could ask him who he bought from.
jonwil Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 For those who want the Grand Emporium, BUY IT NOW. The David Jones in Perth had 2 in stock, both of which were bought by other local AFOLs (I was there at the time but couldn't afford to buy one after having bought all 6 HP sets and the others had the money so I let them take the 2 sets) The guy at DJs said "the 2 on the shelf are all we have and its unlikely we will be getting any more in". Whether David Jones only orders small amounts of these sets or (more likely) LEGO only gives them small amounts of stock I dont know. So if you are in Perth, dont bother trying to find one locally as there are none left. If you are in the eastern states and can still find stock (and are willing to pay the $250 RRP) BUY IT NOW and dont wait as you will regret it.

I can confirm, the 2 in stock for Eastern Australia, specifically Miranda DJs. I went there on Saturday because of Dotmike's tip off of HP at Target (thanks Dotmike). Had a scout around and saw only 1 Grand Emporium. I spoke to the salesman and he said he only got 2 in and the first one got sold as soon as they opened and the the 2nd to me. No more left at Miranda. hat off to the Afol who must be reading Eurobricks regularly. What gets me is why only 2 units. It's nuts. 10 per store at least. I hope this will come back into stores like Fire brigade. It has real potential for stacking ala "Svelte style".
jonwil Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Blame LEGO Australia for how much stock DJs gets. Seems like DJs only ever gets limited amounts of any exclusives for some reason. On the other hand, if you want a Modular Fire Station, you should have no problems whatsoever finding stock :)

I forgot to check Rundle Mall DJ's today, but I can say at Myers they have sold out of Hogwarts Express - but still plenty of the other HP sets. Keep on .......shopping !
Cadder Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 (edited) For Limited sets that you intend to actually open and build... As stupid as this may sound, Try Bricklink. I managed to buy two (yes, TWO) Grand Emporiums from the US from a guy who had them at a reduced price because the boxes had been crushed. I bought them without the boxes. This saved me twofold - firstly, it was cheaper in the first place. Secondly, because there wasn't the bulk and wasted space, the sets came in their original polybags all in one box to reduce the postage. And with the Aussie Dollar pretty darn close to 1:1 against the greenback, there's some real savings to be had. What I got: 2x 10211Grand emporiums $164 ea. (without boxes) 1x 10185 Green Grocer $154 (without box) Combined postage: $123 (with tracking) total: $605. Building fun, priceless. Compare this against buying from Lego S@H in Australia... $749.97 AUD and that's not including postage, which Lego charge an arm and a leg for. edit PS: I'll post photos of my Grander-than-Grand Emporium when I get chance. Whittleberry Posted October 11, 2010 Posted October 11, 2010 (edited) Time for me to report in. I went to Myer Melbourne CBD yesterday and got a Hagrid's Hut, Hogwarts Express and The Burrow. I would have got the others but they had none left. After I left they had 1 hut, about 15 Expresses and about 15 Burrows. Armed with my Myer One extra 10% offer, there was some confusion over how the discount worked (on the ladies' part). I told them I should get 30% off because 20% and 10% make 30%. They said that was wrong and the 10% comes off the discounted price. Then somehow the purchase came to a few cents over $200, a 31% discount, so I have no idea how that works, but I am pleased nonetheless. I am currently on my way to a Target to get the remaining sets at 20% off. Lucky Myer had the more expensive ones! Also, the lady in Myer told me that level 3 of the Bourke St Store (where the LEGO section will be moving) is opening on October 21. According to a member of the MUGS list, there will be a "LEGO Store within a store" inside the madeover Bourke St store, including a shipping crate of sculptures from the Czech Republic and proper LEGO fitout. However it won't be a proper store and apparently is unlikely to feature a PaB. Personally I'm super excited to see this new LEGO section, and I hope its success launches proper LEGO stores in Aus. EDIT: Also, this scrambling to buy Emporiums at RRP is making me not regret getting it at RRP from S@H a while back :) I'd be kicking myself if I could have saved $50... chibi_joker Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 Has anyone spot the Grand Emporium at DJ anywhere in Victoria? DJ Melbourne CBD has none and the girl at the counter has no idea what I was talking about
lightningtiger Posted October 12, 2010 Posted October 12, 2010 G'day everyone, just a quick post....Kmart from Thursday for a week.....city tow truck and lighting repair truck 15 bucks plus limo/copter and Lego semi-trailer 39 bucks. There is also some smaller creator sets reduced too ! Keep on shopping everyone !
emancipist007 Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 Regarding the Grand Emporium at DJs, what I've done every year since Cafe Corner to guarantee that I get the exclusive set(s) AND at the reduced price (which usually goes live mid-November) is layby it at full price, then when it gets reduced take out the layby, refund it, and re-purchase it again. The staff are always more than happy to refund it and let you buy it again at the cheaper price. You have to pay $10 layby fee, but in the long run you'll save at least $40 (depending on how far DJs will reduce the Grand Emporium this year. Also, keep a look out for a 25% off all Toys round about the end of November. DJs only does it for one weekend (last year it was one day only). You'll be able to get the Grand Emporium at the reduced price PLUS 25% off. I paid about $280 last year for the Grand Carousel (full price $399!)
MrMac Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 For Sydney news, no Emporium's in Parramatta DJ's. One remaining in Castle Hill DJ's (as I took the other) and a couple of Fire Stations. Took the option at full retail price, as modular houses are those sets I never want to miss (otherwise pay shipping...)
Clone-Trooper Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Friday, Saturday and Sunday, (15-17 October 2010) Toys'R'Us is having a 20% off special for anything full priced instore !!!! The coupon was E-Mailed to customers this morning.......

Of course, Toys'R'Us even have the coupon at their registers so for those who didn't get it just go down and get it from a cash register....... Toys'R'Us will prefer the sale anyways. Pass on the coupons Edited October 15, 2010 by Clone-Trooper

Not sure who does pricing at fishpond.com, but it's a real lottery. Like they have the Dropship / AT-OT combo slashed to $399, and the 8129 AT-AT is down to $229, and if you missed out on the 7676 Republic Gunship don't despair, they have it in stock, ready to ship in 6-10 days (though if you've used fp before you'll realize their time estimates might actually be in dog years not human) for the grate price of $345. Oh and if you do use them, hopoe you werernt hoping for Mint boxes, the last order I received was basically the Lego box wrapped in brown paper the perfect recipe for a crushed box.
