brickitect Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 If you are in the CBD, there there are Myer, Taget, and Big W all within a few minutes walk of each other ... Thanks for all the info, Splat! More than enough to keep me busy shopping, although to be frank I don't think I would spend much due to the strong Aussie dollar
DarthSion Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 (edited) We purchased them from actual Amazon. There are some sets which will ship (which we started listing earlier) but many others that when you get to the checkout won't ship Interesting, just for my own curiosity I added a CTT to basket but not ordered looks like it will ship, but seems like its only express post, pity, still 160 is a decent price with shipping, maybe I will have to buy one later. I guess they got allot of emails about it because they didn't do that last year. BTW city advent is up on amazon for preorder. Edited July 5, 2011 by DarthSion

Yep, express is the only option, but considering the size of some of the boxes I don't think its an issue. It is interesting that only a few items will ship though, as there are other sets I would be interested in buying. All I did was put a heap of sets into a cart, go to checkout and it would flag which ones couldn't be shipped.

The Amazon box was pretty messed up, with huge tears that had been taped over. The lego box inside was perfectly intact though, with lots of paper padding around it. Now to stare at it constantly until Saturday when I'm allowed to play with it :)
technicmad Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Mine is still in Botany according to the tracker Mine stayed there for a while too, full tracking details: Date Time Location Event Details 6 July 2011 06:11:00 AM Brisbane AU Out for delivery 5 July 2011 07:14:00 PM Botany AU Departure Scan 5 July 2011 11:22:00 AM Botany AU Arrival Scan 5 July 2011 11:04:00 AM Botany AU Arrived at destination country 5 July 2011 04:17:00 AM Botany AU Completed customs clearance process 5 July 2011 04:17:00 AM Botany AU Initiated customs clearance process 5 July 2011 04:17:00 AM Botany AU Completed customs clearance process 5 July 2011 04:17:00 AM Botany AU Initiated customs clearance process 2 July 2011 02:00:00 PM Feltham GB Departure Scan 2 July 2011 11:05:00 AM Feltham GB Arrival Scan 1 July 2011 10:38:00 PM Tamworth GB Arrival Scan 1 July 2011 09:30:00 PM Sheffield GB Departure Scan 1 July 2011 01:01:00 PM Sheffield GB Shipment received by carrier 1 July 2011 01:17:05 PM GB Order has been handed over to the carrier and is in transit
dotmike Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 The funny thing is, these tracking reports are actually more interesting than the sales on at the moment! (I'm not even looking forward to the Target sale, as I'd already Bricklink'd an Alien Conquest fix.) Still, to try and get the sale theme back on track, has anyone heard about another MyerOne extra 10% off the 20% sale coming up? My memory of last year is that there was a second one on the weekend before the sale ended. So in this case, it could be either the Saturday and Sunday of 16/17 July, or more likely 23/24 July. Also, I stumbled across six Emerald Nights that had been restocked right at the end of the sale, so if you missed out on this year's Imperial Flagship or Tower Bridge, there's still hope for both getting one, and getting one at a good price.
Brickmamba Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 If you are in the CBD, there there are Myer, Taget, and Big W all within a few minutes walk of each other (map). Out of these three, Myer has the biggest range, followed by Target, and then Big W. There is also a David Jones next to Myer, but I'm not sure if they have a toy department or not. These are all Australia-wide stores, so they will have the same deals as everywhere else respectively. Myer currently has 20% off Lego, Target sale doesn't start until July 21st, and Big W currently has a sale, but only selected items. If you go out to the suburbs, then you can also find a Toys'R'Us, K-Mart, and Toyworld stores. Not sure if there are any independents left at all...? There is also a Lego exhibition on at Federation Square (Art of the Brick), although from all reports it is aimed at a younger audience. They do have a small shop (free to get in to), although all prices seem to be RRP. This page has an overview of current Lego sales too. DJs got a lego but it is probably the worst selection with little to no discounts out of those you mentioned already
TheDarkness Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 My amazon order arrived safely, very happy. Can't say the same for my fishpond order :(
tj19941994 Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but I have seen the Knight bus popping up in lots of stores in sydney now. :)
slopemodified Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) With all the big amazon orders people have been making, can anyone tell me if Australia charge any customs duty or fee for importing a large amount of goods (i.e. Lego) say, for over $1000? I've found the answer to my own question (should've done that first ): there's a duty on goods assessed at more than AU$1000 Edited July 7, 2011 by slopemodified

lightningtiger Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Target Newton have all the HP and Alien Conquest sets. Get ready for the 21st then !
AussieJimbo Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 (edited) Myer Tuggeranong has a couple of Tower Bridge sets on the top shelf (I found them hidden behind one of the several excavator sets they also have in stock, has an AFOL been there hiding them away until pay day?) $320-ish with the 20% discount is still too rich for my currently restricted Lego budget but I picked up another Hillside House for a MOD I'm working on. (and another Hello Kitty bag for when my niece destroys her first one playing sack racing.) Also visited K-Mart. The City Space Shuttle was at $35 down from $49, a few other sets with minor reductions but not significant enough for me to note them individually. Picked up the Marina set at $59 (25% off), first time I'd seen it in the shops so had to grab it. I think this set is pretty good value. Five minifigs, a boat, a windsurfer, a beach buggy and a nice set of little buildings. Also some useful pieces like white train wagon ends, green roof sections and a bonus spare long antenna. Fun build. (Edited because I now know the Marina was actually on sale too. LOL) :classic: Edited July 8, 2011 by AussieJimbo
Hewman Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Picked up the Marina set at $59 (RRP), first time I'd seen it in the shops so had to grab it. Leaving aside the Aussie RRP markup debate, I think this set is pretty good value. Five minifigs, a boat, a windsurfer, a beach buggy and a nice set of little buildings. Also some useful pieces like white train wagon ends, green roof sections and a bonus spare long antenna. Fun build. :classic: The RRP for the marina is actually $79.99, so the $59 you paid is 25% off which is a nice deal.
dotmike Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 (edited) Target Newton have all the HP and Alien Conquest sets. Get ready for the 21st then ! If one was very naughty, one could buy them now, hide duplicates behind unlooked at items on the shelves (Megabloks would do), then when the sale starts buy the same sets again and return them as the ones you bought using the pre-sale docket. Of course no one here would ever do this. Er, I meant, the definition of an AFOL is someone who would do this! Myer Tuggeranong has a couple of Tower Bridge sets on the top shelf (I found them hidden behind one of the several excavator sets they also have in stock, has an AFOL been there hiding them away until pay day?) $320-ish with the 20% discount is still too rich for my currently restricted Lego budget Based on my previous post, I'm tempted to say yes!, though Myer have been restocking through the sale, so it's equally possible they're freshly arrived. I'm betting there will be another MyerOne 10% extra discount the weekend before the sale ends, so the price could have been $287.10 for the AFOL who hid them, until you had to go and foil their cunning plan! Fun build. It's actually $79.99 RRP and is a Kmart special, so $59 actually represents over a 26% discount, so that could have helped make it seem like good value. I thought it seemed a bit sparse, even though I liked the windsurfer. You've convinced me to take another look. Edited July 8, 2011 by dotmike

Thanks for the clarification dotmike and hewman, the sale tag must have dropped off the shelf. I'm betting there will be another MyerOne 10% extra discount the weekend before the sale ends, so the price could have been $287.10 for the AFOL who hid them, until you had to go and foil their cunning plan! Nope, left it as is so they've still got a chance. :-D Would be nice to get that extra 10%, the sales lady I spoke to said it was only for first 4 days of the sale, let's hope you're right. I thought it seemed a bit sparse, even though I liked the windsurfer. You've convinced me to take another look. It's spread out I guess with the bridge connecting the two wharves but there is lots going on. Some nice little details like the coffee machine and plenty of minifig accessories to play with. :classic: Edited July 8, 2011 by AussieJimbo
dotmike Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Bought one this afternoon, along with two blue baseplates. Thanks for the enthusiasm making me take another look!

I've found the answer to my own question (should've done that first ): there's a duty on goods assessed at more than AU$1000 The only exception over $1000 is artworks, so if you can convince them that your LEGO purchase is a piece of art you might be in luck. A while ago I bought a polystone Boba Fett statue and tried to convince customs that it was a piece of art (which any Boba Fett fan would agree with). Unfortunately customs don't appear to be Boba Fett fans...
AussieJimbo Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 (edited) Bought one this afternoon, along with two blue baseplates. Thanks for the enthusiasm making me take another look! Good one mate, hope you enjoy it. Mine looks nice sitting next to the lighthouse. Might have to fish out my coast guard platform and put it back together, I think I'll be needing a few more blue baseplates too. It's funny how I got the RRP wrong before. While building it, I was thinking how good it was for a $60 set. This might sound strange but I'm convinced I felt more satisfied with the value than I would have done if I'd known it was an $80 set at 25% off, despite the price obviously being the same. :classic: Edited July 8, 2011 by AussieJimbo
Splat Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Over on the Whirlpool forums it looks like quite a few Aussies have cancelled their order for the 8043 Excavator from TheHut, and have got them from Amazon.co.uk instead (including me). There was also a post saying that TheHut was expecting their shipment of 8043's on the 14th of July, so if you still have your order with them you might get your shipment soon. For me, waiting 3 months since I placed the order with The Hut is a bit much, especially when their website originally stated that they would be shipped within 3 days. And then I'm sure the shipping will take another few weeks too. Amazon had the shipment delivered to me in less than 4 days. I haven't checked this out yet (I can't read French), but there are reports that Amazon.fr will ship some Lego sets to Australia too.
Delta 38 Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 Well, the other day I went to Big W in search of Pharaoh's Quest. I was disappointed that they didn't have the Golden Staff Guardians set, but I got the other sets I wanted. Interestingly, I also saw one single Scarab impulse set in Kmart in the same area. Maybe someone left it there or it was stocked by accident.
DarthSion Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 If you guys are so eager to try getting lego cheap from amazon, why not try normal amazon with the exchange rate being good. Or try amazon global. http://www.amazon.com/International-Shipping-Direct/b?ie=UTF8&node=230659011
TheDarkness Posted July 9, 2011 Posted July 9, 2011 I tried amazon.com the other day and couldn't get anything to stay in the shopping cart. A quick scour of that International section has no lego sets eligible, just books or games, save the Jack Sparrow minifig
TheDarkness Posted July 10, 2011 Posted July 10, 2011 I ordered a few 8053 Technic Mobile Cranes from Amazon UK this morning. Really cannot sneeze at a price of less than $80 each when buying a few
