Just out of curiosity, how many people are still regularly buying Lego in-store in Australia? Aside from an SW Advent calendar group buy during a Myer 3-for-2 sale (thanks again Brick Mamba) and some clearance Alien Conquest for a need-now present, I haven't bought anything this calendar half year. I just can't justify it, even during sales time, when it's so much cheaper from OS... When I see these sales posts the prices still seem overly expensive to what I can source elsewhere...

Just wondering if others are in the same boat?

As I grabbed most SW sets mid year before getting more leads re: US purchases, it'll have to be a pretty good sale to get me buying locally for new 2012 sets. There is the pull of "ooohhh there they are" which may get one or two purchases early but I tend to think very little if I can learn some patience.

I did buy the Black Pearl locally which I'm happy enough with, because I haven't come across any better options overseas yet. I'm also tempted to get the big Alien Conquest set from Myer at 25% off, but this one is difficult (not impossible) to source from overseas and I do like my pristine boxes. Besides that, I may get some of the cheaper city or even the small ninjago set that's out early next year locally, but most big sets are better to source from overseas.

For those Lego Club members that haven't got their new magazine yet, there's another freebie set in it this year. I won't give away what it is, but it's cuter than last year's snowman.

Im sorcing more and more overseas. Its cheaper, dont need to rush around folloing the sales in the retail stores and checking stock levels, get it delivered to your door, can shop at 1am or when ever it suits me.

Ive found that www.dvd.co.uk has some nice deals but as always shipping is the killer. Im going to buy 8486 Mack Team Truck for $51 delivered, when Lego RRP is $69 and a 20% off at the retailers will get you it for $56. Still saving $5 and being charged 15 pounds ($19.50 AU) shipping.

For those in Adelaide, I just visited Toyworld in the city and they had the two medium size Space Police sets on about 40% discount, the limo set was $40 and the mid-range space police vehicle was $35. They also had world racers on clearance, but didn't even bother checking the price, but I don't imagine too many people here would have been desperate for the details. They also had sorting heads for $35 I think.

must say i have bought quite a bit in store this year, mostly from myer during 3 for 2, 20%+10% and TRU 30% sales, being able to buy locally and not dealing with shipping must make these sales quite competitive compared to oe right, or am i missing something lol?

For smaller sets buying locally at discount is probably just as economical as buying from overseas - it's only really for bigger sets that substantial savings can be had once the cost of delivery is taken into account.

I think I subscribe to this school of thought also. I just happen to be an AFOL that really only buys larger sets, so for me buying from OS has *always* been significantly cheaper than here in-store, the very rare clearance set aside (ie those fire brigade modulars at Myer). Even paying Bricklink prices plus shipping ends up being cheaper. I find I get around 35-50% off Aussie retail when I buy from OS. You will never find that sort of discount - reliably - here. Sure, you score the odd bargain but that's all chance. Ordering online usually means you're guaranteed of receiving it at that price, and I've not had too many problems with set condition either (only two sets of mine have had moderate box squeezage - and as I'm not a 'reseller' or MISB hoarder I don't care).

I would have thought that buying a larger number of smaller sets at the same time would also be significantly cheaper than here?

I still buy a fair bit, but only when they are on sale, and I want 25% off or more.

I buy in store because I like to have it there and then and I am usually buying the sets for parts for something that I am building and I don't want to wait a week or 2 for it. I also buy a lot of parts off bricklink, and having them arriving all the time in the post is fun but I'm not going to buy something from overseas and wait for it for weeks to save $5..

There's a specific thread here where all discussion for buying from overseas goes. It's a wealth of information and I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for there.

Are there any trains or ships like the black pearl still in stock in shops, I am going to get some money this weekend, I intend to go to Browns plains where there is a Mr Toys, BigW, Kmart and Target.

For those of us in Adelaide, Toys-R-Us Rundle Mall only 8-10 December 20% off Lego.

My problem is money, I still must get Diagon Alley off a Target layby. :sing::blush:

Footnote - TRU are closing this store, hence clearing stocks by all appearances.

http://images.smh.com.au/file/2011/12/09/2828663/LEGO_T84-SMH.pdf

Thats awsome news that I dind not know that was happening. Must ask the newsagent what they are going to do with all the left over minifigs? Time to stock up. Finally we get a deal close to the UK's paper givaway, collectable minigis are not as good as a pollybag but Im not complaining about free Lego  .

TRU must be trying to clear stocks of their Cars2 Tokyo racetrack set.....from the 14th....80 bucks off...only $79.99.

Apart from that you get better discounts at Target before the 14th.

Yeaterday I bought 5 pappers and got 12 minifigs, $10 for 12 minifigs = 83c each = Very happy. I went down to another newsagent today (Monday) and they need to give the left overs back to Fairfax but he said if I brought my copons down he would give me minifigs for them . Origianlly I bought 5 papers and they didnt take to coupons so I will reuse them for another 5 minifigs. Just ask your local newsagent and see if they still have any. Im also going in to the local shops at lunch to see if there are any other newsagents that have any left. Good luck.
