This was a side project, maybe the Sherman tank engine inspired me.

This is an inline 2 pistons engine with double camshaft and 8 valves.

The valves are parallel to the piston which is not common but still realistic.

The combustion chambers are open to the sky (as usual with fake engines) with 4 valves each

Camshaft are driven by 12/24th gears.

Gravity alone closes the valves, this doesn't allow high rev but side-valve engines are typically high-torque low-rev engines.

I hope you'll enjoy it!

Merry Christmas!

Very nice to see realistic valves! A big upgrade on the standard fake engine!

Nice engine!  It’s a bit like a Flathead engine, which has the valves on the sides.

Nice job getting proper valve timing too.  This is often overlooked on engine Mocs.

Thank you! Yes I would love to see more realistic details in a fake engine in an official Technic set.

This one is less detailed. It only has overhead camshafts but It's a V8!

Every cylinder has two cams. The timing is realistic with gray intake cams and black exhaust cams

Camshafts are driven by the crankshaft through 8/24/20/16 gears

This other one is a WIP based on a thought about the 42130 m1000rr fake engine.

The 4cylinder fake engine uses standards fake pistons and cylinder which are very small for a 1/5 scale:

The displacement scaled up 5 times is ~310cm3 that's a bit ridiculous.

I have bought lately a 2nd hand 42130 set and I d'like to try a 1:5 motorcycle MOC with a more detailed and bigger fake engine.

So this is a 1/5 scale single cylinder with a camshaft and "valve rockers". Based on the KTM/Husquvarna 700cm3 big single with SOHC (single overhead camshaft)

The displacement scaled up 5 times is 900cm3 that's a bit too much but I think it's a good base.y4mSu5IRNG_aoLZTnE5Ao9jK_gLap1jGXN5L8W95

Maybe someone saw it coming... after the flathead and the v8. The Ford V8 Flathead!

Just like the real one it has a single camshaft over the crankshaft and side valves. The dark brown 3L valves are exhaust and dark tan 3.2L valves are intake.

It only has triple exhaust manifold on each side, the exhaust passes between cylinders 2 and 3 and beside 1 and 4.

...and Yes! It has proper valve timing for each cylinder!

You will see a thin white string. It prevents the valvetrain to jam with high rev and turning the engine upside down.

Now I want to build a car for it. Perfect engine for a big hot rod!

I think the new straight 12-tooth gears are a perfect solution for the valvetrains using chains.

Yes I had to carve one out of a 12-tooth black bevel gear for the single cylinder above.

the next step for me would be having small lego compatible springs to create more complex valvetrains.

This new one is inspired by German airplanes engines of WW2 with an inverted V8 with overhead camshafts.

The inverted configuration allows gravity to close the valves.

It is too big to fit in a MOC but it is a nice motorized desk model.

These engines would make a great addition in this thread.

I thought the full valvetrain concept deserved a separate thread. It's not really the same scale too...

The fake engine collection thread doesn't have a scale restriction.. Basically every single fake engine is welcome no matter how they're built.
Even non functioning engines that just look nice are also welcome.

Following a private discussion I challenged myself to the Ford T inline 4. Trying to feature as much details as possible with a technic theme.

The main thing I could not really represent was the long connecting rods and the crankshaft mounted lower than camshaft IRL and crankshaft higher in my model. Because of the size of the camshaft it would interfere with the connecting rods. To keep the engine silhouette realistic the shaft driving the chain and the power fonction motor are at the correct crankshaft level.

This engine was very simple. No oil pump or water pump. only a belt driven fan.

Features

-Realistic crankshaft with 3 bearings

-Camshaft and valvetrain, correct firing order

-Intake manifold with carburetor, fuel tank, fuel line

-Full cooling system

-Wired spark plugs

This was my main documentation for this project:

I made a stud.io file if someone is interested.

I slept on it and found a way to have long connecting rods and realistic crankshaft and camshaft positions.

The crankshaft rotation swept area and camshaft swept area indeed interfere but with proper timing everything rotates around each other nicely. Despite the total size I am really happy with this compact design.

Last improvement for the Ford T engine : hand-crank starter with a one-way mechanism. You can only turn the engine the right way.

In the process I discovered that my engine was turning the wrong way compared to original. I had to mirror the camshaft to keep proper valve timing and the 1 - 2 - 4 - 3 firing order. Now everything turns the right way, even the hand-crank !

I then added a similar one-way mechanism between the electric motor and the crankshaft. The electric motor only drives the crankshaft the right way and the hand-crank rotates the engine without the electric motor.

Omg that is insane!! I was working on that same thing but you beat me to the punch! I just couldn't figure out the camshaft and was following your V8's build and try to make it that way.
