Same thoughts here as the CMF series, Buildable Figure and Wolverine mech. I'm glad we're getting product from X-Men 97, but when are we going to get proper minifigure scale sets? The X-Mansion, Blackbird, Sentinel, Danger Room... those shouldn't be too much to ask. Its like having a range of Batman sets with no Batcave or Batmobile.

I can only hope this is just an appetizer and they start doubling down on the good stuff when the show starts airing in January.

What do you mean? Every Batman fan wants to have Batman's utility belt made of LEGO on display! /s

Considering the last live action Wolverine film was rated R and now his next one is also rated R, I wonder if that will effect the production of Wolverine toys and purchases in the future. Parents might not like having their kids get toys of the character. I mean Deadpool is pretty much off limits for lego since he has became synonymous with the Ryan Reynolds version. Granted not all live action appearances of the Wolverine character have been rated R like Deadpool, But it makes me wonder if they will keep Wolverine in the R-rated realm for live action in the future.

Either way, I’m glad that we’re getting another new wolverine in the CMF and I hope he’s super detailed. Rumor has it that Hugh Jackman is gonna suit up in a very comic-booky costume in DP3.

In the near future they can exploit x-men 97, and when the group is introduced in the MCU it will not be rated R. so no problem for the exploitation of the character

Of course it's just my opinion. And I sincerely still hope to get a set for deadpool 3 :-p

A direct tie-in set? No way. TLG simply do not release sets based on R-rated movies. I‘ll eat a Deadpool minifig on camera, dressed as Deadpool, if that happens :laugh_hard:

An indirect tie-in is possible, but still far from likely as Deadpool is now mostly asspciated with the films, as others have pointed out.

I'll remember it :-D

I know it's unlikely but now my life as a lego-marvel-fan is a continuous disappointment, one more is not a problem

Well, you can only be disappointed if you‘re expecting something, so you’re creating a self-fulfilling prophecy here

If you’re after mutant content, X-Men 97 sets are way more likely.

Beh, puoi essere deluso solo se ti aspetti qualcosa, quindi stai creando una profezia che si autoavvera qui:lingua:

Se stai cercando contenuti mutanti, i set X-Men 97 sono molto più probabili.

The day I lose hope lego will have lost a customer… In truth I have very low expectations, I would be happy to see the normal playsets with minifigures :-P The x-men 97 sets have great potential, I would love an old school wave, with 4 or 5 sets (with minifigures).. I would gladly buy a whole army of well made sentries

Ah yes, why have proper sets based on X-Men ‘97 when you can have (checks notes) a buildable Wolverine action figure and buildable Wolverine’s glove.

Can’t complain too much as at least we’ll get minifigure coverage via the CMF I suppose, but I wish the decision makers behind this theme would remember that good, solid system scale sets are worth their weight in gold regardless of the target audience.

@Lyichir That’s an interesting observation, but more likely than not a red herring I’d say. Stuntz also introduced the Ant Man helmet in green, which many speculated to indicate a potential use for Green Goblin, but alas nothing.

I could see Deadpool getting included in an 18+ X-Mansion much like Punisher was with the Daily Bugle. I don't think the film itself will get a direct tie-in set but hopefully Lego still goes all out on the X-Men merchandise next year.

Spoiler warning for Deadpool 3 - but it will also be interesting to see if

Spoiler

Daredevil shows up in any sets next year even if its a generic Spider-Man one. Between the Fox cast returning in Deadpool 3 and the Netflix cast for Born Again you couldn't ask for better timing. Would be nice to get some other characters like Kingpin and Elektra as well.

There needs to be a change in leadership for the Marvel team. Promote the guy who did the Bugle or Benatar and give him creative control over the product line.

The current guy has lost all touch on what makes quality products that Marvel fans are actually looking for. It feels like a random fluke when there actually is a decent set (last good set was Sanctum) in an ocean of absolute garbage of cheap mechs, buildable figures and overpriced sets like the Hulkbuster, BP bust, helmets/gloves/shields that offer no value.

The Bugle was by Mark Stafford, who Brickset also lists as the designer for the BP bust. 😀

The Benatar was by Chris Perron, who also did the much less popular Bowie. (To be fair, it's probably not the designer's fault that the Bowie is exponentially bigger, AND had less of a budget.)

So, yeah.

“You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”...

Lol in that case I wouldn't trust the Bugle designer with a ten foot pole, there needs to be some redemption in design quality.

Sad to see the person who designed the Benatar, also churned out the low quality Bowie 🤮. The sets feel like they were designed by a completely different person.

A few things quickly:
1. we know at least some designers frequent this forum, though I don't believe Stafford is one of them (or doesn't have an account, at least). I'm not saying the BP bust wasn't a terrible idea for an official set, just something to keep in mind.

2. Stafford himself has done a variety of excellent sets, and pushed for characters like DD and Punisher in the bugle. I'd definately still trust his designs. In fact, if I remember correctly, wasn't there something about the BP bust being first made just as a MOC and turned into an official set later (or was that the Cantina?)

And this is where budget and pricing come into play. For $100, that's about as good as the Bowie was gonna get. You can't really fault the designer for the set not being a bigger budget or being sold at a larger price point.

I don't really like this way of thinking. It's akin to the people who always want to immediately hand over the keys to a franchise to the first person that created something they like, without considering any of the logistics.

Being a set designer and creative lead of an entire theme are two very different jobs. As a lead, you have to answer to higher-ups and take up so many other responsibilities (budgeting etc) you barely have time to actually work on sets, I imagine. Also, I cannot imagine the set line-up being dictated by the creative lead, especially with licensed themes. I'm sure some set ideas are proposed by Marvel, while others come from individual designers. This is a collaborative effort, after all.

I thought that was the Bugle, the set no one had expected. The BP bust, on the other hand, was pretty clearly meant to capitalize on the movies and related events (and so presumably ordered by someone upstairs).

Meh, the colours are also pretty off. But of course we don't know what concept art they had to work with.

These are the designer notes on brickset about the BP bust

Designed during COVID lockdown. I was allowed to work in my LEGO basement at home as it is not visible from outside the building. I think it may have benefited from input from other designers, maybe cleaner builds or reaching solutions faster than working alone. However I'm happy with the final look and I'm proud to have worked on this LEGO set. It's the second helmet design worn by Chadwick Boseman, an actor who really brought this hero (who had previously not meant a lot to me) to life, his performance made T'Challa heroic, cool, and above all empathetic. He is gone from this world far too soon. LEGO will never mention him in official marketing, it would be ghoulish, but speaking personally he is why I wanted to be the designer on this set.

I don't know what role the designers have, I would like to know what process leads Lego to decide to produce 50 buildable stuff and 4 playsets.. and who decided that "adults" are not interested in minifigures :-/

Yeah, that's kind of the problem: We don't know enough to do anything but speculate.

Like, for example: 76207 Attack on New Asgard is, to me, a badly designed set. That antagonist looks just goofy instead of menacing, and I've heard that it also doesn't resemble anything in the movie (I haven't actually seen the movie). But we don't know what happened here. Maybe the designer thought this looked cool. Or maybe they figured that spending a large part of the budget on three minifigs was worth the trade-off. (The set does seem to be good value for money - a rarity in Marvel Lego nowadays). Or maybe they were given concept art that looked just like this and faithfully recreated it, only for the art to then not be featured in the finished movie. We just don't know.

Even when we get designer statements, I take them with a grain of salt. For example: the 76405 Hogwarts Express. Presumably someone upstairs went like "Hey, we really need a EUR 500 Hogwarts Express" (spoiler alert: we really don't). I then read an interview with the designer which made it seem like the decision to turn it into a display piece that won't run on any tracks and includes only a teeny-tiny slice of King's Cross Station (as opposed to making a fully motorized version with tracks and a decent-sized railway station, which was what people seemed to actually want) was theirs. But it's interesting that the current wave of HP sets includes a Hogwarts Express that runs on tracks with a train station. So it might well be that the designer was discouraged from making something like that (because the two sets would have been too similar) and also discouraged from talking about it (because it would have been a spoiler for the current wave).

Bottom line: We just don't know.

In conclusione: semplicemente non lo sappiamo.

The problems with film sets I think are simply due to concept art, sometimes incomplete and sometimes inaccurate, with the films being changed all the time. It is common to find Lego sets in edited drawings or erased storyboards.

As for Love and Thunder you can be happy for 76207, because it's even better than the movie :-D

we don't know many things and probably we will never know, but I would still like to have a chat with those who make the decisions to understand what problems they have! :-D

You clearly don't know Mark Stafford then. Look up his bricklist on Brickset. The guy's a fantastic fan and designer who has done tons of legendary sets.

Oh, hi Mark!

(I know you're not him, but someone'll get that reference at least)

The wider point is that while sure, there are sets that could have been designed better (and I would put the BP set in that list, it's face feels off to me), most of people's issues with the marvel theme aren't the fault of the designers themselves. (Lack of/poorly distributed print/mold budget, sets being made where you really do wonder who asked for them, etc)

To be fair, that's not necessarily true either. I'm not trying to blame the shadowy people upstairs for everything. Sure, you won't get a Benatar-quality set if you have to design a ship that should be easily four times the Benatar's size on less than the Benatar's budget. But also, if Mark Stafford could get the Bugle made, clearly the designers have some input on which sets get produced. I mean that's one of the biggest Marvel sets in years, and one of the few not backed by the MCU.

We just don't know how much influence they do have.

Exactly. Also, us customers have influence too, as we vote with our wallets  The buildable objects must sell pretty decently, otherwise TLG wouldn’t continue to produce them. This type of set has been around long enough now that TLG clearly know how well it’s doing
