icm Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Since the Keaton Batmobile we're getting is connected to the Flash movie, are we sure that the Keaton Batwing we're getting will be the 1989 version and not the Flash movie version?

Good question - I am not sure, but I think that the Minifigs for the Batwing are Bats and Joker, so it seems like it will be for 1989. 6 hours ago, Falconfan1414 said: Batcave is Keaton This is disappointing. While a Keaton Batcave would be nice to get at normal playscale, it is too under-detailed for such a large and expensive set. $500 is far too high for any movie Batcave, and it severely restricts the Minifigs that we can get (as well as depriving us of more obscure characters that would realistically only show up in a large AFOL-oriented set).

Er, you’re forgetting the obligatory little prison with escape feature.
TheBatstan Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 I've seen some people want the Schumacher characters to be included in this, but I really don't think that's happening. I know that for years the Schumacher movies were loosely connected to the Burton movies with some references here and there (a Catwoman mention in Batman Forever and Bruce telling Dick how his parents were also killed by "a maniac"/Joker). But as of 2021, it's safe to say they've been deemed non-canon because of the Batman '89 comic series that was written by one of the original screenwriters of the 1989 movie and Batman Returns. Long story short, it took place after Returns and followed up on a bunch of concepts that Burton never got to do like Billy Dee Williams's Harvey Dent turning into Two-Face as well as introducing Burton's version of Robin played by Marlon Wayans who was a teenage mechanic in the earlier drafts of Batman Returns that were cut. I know the chances of the Batcave set designers actually reading the comic are less than 1%, but it'd be a great place to get some inspiration for potential figures to fill the set. The Batcave in the comic is pretty much 99% the same from Batman Returns too but with a couple significant additions, like the Batcycle and the GIANT PENNY: If Lego was looking to pad out the vehicle lineup in the set apart from the Batskiboat, adding in this Batcycle would be a great choice. Plus since it's canon that Keaton's Bruce had the giant penny in his Batcave now, throwing it in the set would really help make it less empty looking. And yes, if it wasn't clear enough already, this whole post was written while I was on lethal amounts of copium.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we're getting Schumacher minifigures, but I also don't think Lego cares that much (if at all) about if the movies are/were canon. Lego barely does anything comic book related anyway, let alone the batman 89 comics! (Jk)

DaredevilFan Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Well that’s disappointing it’s Keaton based. Hopefully it sells enough for them to make other UCS DC sets. The batmobiles started with Keaton’s one, so maybe if the cave sells well they might make one based on the comics, Dark knight trilogy or other movies
EthanWilbarb Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Damn I really thought we might get back on track with DC but we're getting a Flash wave that is basically just a Keaton wave and a 450 dollar Keaton cave... Might as well just change the theme to Lego Batman 89. They could have done anything, comics, BTAS, I even think the Pattinsons subway batcave wouldve been way more interesting and relevant. At least I'm saving money though. 1 minute ago, DaredevilFan said: Well that’s disappointing it’s Keaton based. Hopefully it sells enough for them to make other UCS DC sets. BrickBob Studpants Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Am I the only one who‘s really pumped by the Batcave being based on Returns? You guys sure are funny. The DC theme is finally being restored to its former glory with multiple playsets and a location-based D2C set, and yet I see nothing but complaints We don‘t even know the layout of the set yet nor the full minifig selection! While I agree that a $450 set is kind of overkill, I would‘ve thought so about ANY Batcave. And don‘t tell me you would‘ve been happy with a character like Clayface or Mad Hatter being paywalled behind it
SuperSquidman Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 (edited) So much for my comment about being excited for new vitality in the DC theme. I would’ve preferred a comic based batcave or a Batfleck batcave if it were to be film-based (the former can have more figures and elements though.) Was the new cowl made specifically for these Keaton-centric/inclusive sets or was it made for the sake of being made? Because it doesn’t look enough like Keaton’s cowl to make me feel as though they made it for him specifically. If anything it looks more like they tried to make an Animated Series-type cowl for the rumored diorama coming out next year. 13 minutes ago, BrickBob Studpants said: Am I the only one who‘s really pumped by the Batcave being based on Returns? And don‘t tell me you would‘ve been happy with a character like Clayface or Mad Hatter being paywalled behind it I don’t know if it’s really being returned to its former glory though; the batcave being Keaton-based is not too much of a departure decision-wise from the UCS(-style) Keaton films’ vehicles they did previously and the leaked Penguin figure doesn’t really look like a $450 set figure. I know that some of the Daily Bugle’s figures had the same amount of detail (Daredevil only had printing in the same places; the face and torso) but they felt more consummate. The only new thing that invokes the theme returning to its former glory for me is the new cowl but it seems likely that if it was done for a specific reason that it was done for the rumored, upcoming, BTAS diorama set because it looks nothing like Keaton’s cowl and there’s yet to be anything that really, wholly speaks to the DC theme being fully revitalized to wager that it was made because of renewed life/vitality. (Come to think of it the diorama could be evidence of new vitality in the theme but that’s only a D2C or D2C-type set and at least one new mould is not atypical for such sets. And really one D2C set one year and another D2C the next with a new mould or two(?) in each set doesn’t reflect the wider theme’s quality.) Edited March 24, 2023 by SuperSquidman
Legoman123 Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Who confirmed it to be Keaton’s Batcave? If it’s true what an absolute waste of potential again from Lego with DC, they’re an absolute joke. All the endless potential from the comics they could use for a $500 Batcave but they go back to one of the most boring versions with characters we’ve had a million times. No chance to get exclusive minifigures that we’ve never seen before. They give Batman no love and when they finally decide to not only do they do yet another Batcave but a very dull one with basic characters.
psqidexslizer Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 The Batcave being Keaton based is kinda disappointing. But at the same time, it’s Lego. We can easily modify it to make it comic based. Ideally, a $500 shouldn’t be something you buy so yo can modify, but it is what it is I guess. Also, great to see we’re getting Returns Penguin and Catwoman. Been wanting versions of those characters for a while.
Lego_ofme Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Bit disappointed with Danny Devito penguin minifigure. Somehow feel the Lego Batman movie penguin minifigure captures the character better. Either way I will reserve judgement on the set until I see it - hope there are some good minifigures - would love Batman Forever Two-Face but I think that’s very unlikely as people above have mentioned.

That being said, I'm really excited to see how it ends up looking, I'm sure that at the very least it will be impressive.

TLMB Penguin was very clearly based on Devito’s take on the character, more specifically, the most iconic costume he wore. Probably why they decided to base their actual Devito Penguin on a different costume he wore.

Legocentrico Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Like many colleagues I would have preferred a comics context: I wanted maximum creative freedom for the build and especially the minifigures! I can't picture the model in my head, but I hope Rivendell has set a new standard for this type of set. If they do for Batman what they did for LOTR I will be satisfied. Of course I hope Lego will come back to give us new regular sets as early as 2024
bricksbyjim Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 Is the Batcave being based on Keatons movie based just on the penguin minifig? or was there a rumor saying it was Keatons? I could still se a comic cave with some minifigs being based on movies.

NovaBricks Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 After sleeping on this, it's even more of a baffling decision to me. Outside of the already existing "relationship" or whatever you want to call it between LEGO and the Burton-verse, this just seems like such a weird move. It's possibly the most basic cave depiction in media (tied with BTAS because it's clearly pretty much the same one), it limits the selection of figs, and it's based on a movie that's pretty strange and dark. And I think it's fairly obvious that those other sets are now going to compliment the cave in the same way the Iron-man figure does to the hulkbuster. So we're looking at a $450 cave with zero vehicles? This thing must be occupy a very large physical footprint to justify this. Maybe some lightbricks to give it a gloomy feel? There's something here we're missing. I know a lot of people who can afford this grew up with Keaton as their Batman, but I doubt any of those people would've scoffed at a comic or BTAS inspired set. This has to be a Flash tie-in. There's no other explination.

Eaglefan344 Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 This doesn't make any sense unless the set is mostly Wayne Manor. The bat cave part is so bare and gloomy. No idea how they could do a $450 set with that.
