Of course those of us who aren't completionists fare somewhat better and if one hunts for deals it's even better. I managed to get most of the 2022 sets at a discount one way or another last year so I think I did fairly well. No Brickheadz, Hogwarts Express or Hungarian Horntail for me, saving even more. I did buy multiples of the Buildable Hogwarts polybag at regular retail but that was just $50 and both Magical trunks I bought were with discounts one before the price increase & the second one after but when I got the second one I paid less than the original price. As for the 2023 sets I will be skipping the Brickheadz. Iffy on the Knight bus. Will probably get Dobby and definitely Gringotts. Most likely I will most of the others but not if it's something buildable like the Horntail, Hedwig or Fawkes. If the Quidditch Trunk is like the Magical one was I'll probably get at least one if not two. I will be holding out for deals again this year, same as last year.

From the 2018 reboot onwards, I was only missing the art set and the Harry and Hermione bigfigs but I got them for Christmas because they were reduced. With this ridiculously-priced wave, I'm going to have to wait for offers and sales because it's unattainable to carry on like this. So many of the 2022 sets had great offers over Christmas so I'm going to try and hang on. I can imagine the Brickheadz will be reduced sooner or later because I can't see them being best-sellers with that character line up. There is no way I'm buying a £150 Knight Bus and if Expecto Patronum really is a vignette I can skip another £60 there, too (i will probably not be able to resist getting them in the future at a lower price, though). I have £120 in VIP Points so I'm going to use them towards Gringotts, and wait for the GWP if it doesn't run alongside its launch. I'm desperate for all of the Banners (except Slytherin) but I can imagine they'll be reduced soon like the Moments books, too. For the past two summers, Very has offered me a 20% discount because I have an account with them, which I have used for the June sets. Fingers crossed it happens again! I take my hat off to you and others who do go all in. I tried, but it just became overwhelming. That being said, I try and wait for good discounts like you, but sometimes spontaneity wins and things magically Add to Basket. I have £95 VIP so will probably treat myself in March to the Second Task and Room Of Requirement sets unless Amazon discounts quick then I will save my VIP for Gringotts along with the £100 gift card I got for Christmas. Crazy to think that would still only cover half the price though! I have no interest in the banner concept so am going to have to wait until those figs come down in price and purchase separately unless they discount to stupid cheap. But as for the rest of the wave I can't really say which ones I definitely won't get apart from Dobby. He would have to be super cute for me to purchase as buildable creatures aren't my thing, but after that, the Quidditch Trunk holds no appeal either, yet if it has enough desirable minifigs then it might just makes sense to purchase in the end. Still going to be an expensive year that's for sure (side note: I also love Star Wars, but this theme is killing my wallet and useable living space, so I just can't go there).

Wow you're right, I've just looked and last year's sets cost £1,117.86 full price (before the price increases) in the UK so probably about the same as this year!
karrit Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 (edited) Harry Potter is the biggie for me but unfortunately for my wallet I collect from other themes also. There are a few Ideas sets coming I'm interested in as well as the new botanicals. I usually get some of the Creator sets, the Modular & Winter Village. Also some Friends & City, an occasional Star Wars set. I think Indy may be a biggie for me this year and depending on the LOTR set maybe that one too (both of those were originally out during some of my Dark Ages). There may also be a few Disney ones I go for this year. Fortunately, I don’t feel the need to be a completionist with any of them. And some sets I just end up grabbing interesting new parts off PAB if they become available. Edited January 13, 2023 by karrit
NostalgicBricks Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 There are so many beautiful and amazing Lego sets and I'm always tempted by them, but I only collect Lego Harry Potter. I also collect non-Lego Harry Potter and Wizarding World products. I did collect all the Lego Simpsons and Lego Dimensions add-ons, too. Sometimes I get the odd small thing like the New York postcard, or the Muppets CMFs for my mom. This year I'm going to convince my dad to buy some Indiana Jones sets because Indiana Jones to him is what Harry Potter is to me - he doesn't like to build Lego, but I do. I also really want to buy the Home Alone house for me and my boyfriend to build at Christmas because it's both of ours favourite Christmas film, but I want to find a good offer before it's retired. I would also be tempted by that Taylor Swift Ideas house if it ever came to fruition.
mirkwoodspiders Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 At one point I only collected Star Wars. Then, HP came back, so I said, "Ok, only Star Wars and HP." Then, sets like 1989 Batmobile, Titanic, Pirates of Barracuda Bay, etc. started coming out, and I thought, "Ok, only Star Wars, HP, and these once-in-a-generation sort of sets..." Now, here come LOTR, Indiana Jones, and GRINGOTT'S/lots of other solid HP offerings in 2023 like a freight train... it's getting untenable. My own fault for branching out so far into other sets and themes, of course, but LEGO needs to quit making so many interesting, well-designed sets
NostalgicBricks Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 JediJACPenguin says the $120 set is actually listed for only $100. Everyone's comments about the Lovegood house have got me so hyped that I really hope it's that.

The Lovegood house might not be iconic but it's certainly interesting and would make a lovely Lego set. I do want a Ship, too, though.
krimimimi Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 (edited) I know I'm not the target market because I don't care about ships one way or another, but I doubt I could tell the difference between the Durmstrang ship and one held to a similar palette. On the other hand, the Lovegood house (which I also don't know if I'd want as a set) has an outline I'm unlikely to confuse with another build. So I do think "iconic" is a fair term to apply. Plus it had a fair bit more screen time, and we actually saw the interior, which the designers have said in the past makes it more likely they'll produce a set. Edited January 13, 2023 by krimimimi
joeee Posted January 13, 2023 Posted January 13, 2023 Gringotts - WOW we are finally getting it and WOW at that price! I know $430 is steep...but I relieved they did not make it a $129 set. It might have been pretty bad. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE include the entrance to DA though. Knight Bus - As a huge fan of POA: I cannot wait to see this one. I will probably hold off on it and get it down the line. Quidditch Trunk - Buildable Quidditch balls and trunk would make this set for me. Love Quidditch so much when the movies came out because John Williams' score is my life. Battle of Hogwarts - I would be more excited for this set if we were still in the old style of Hogwarts. Expecto Patronum - What if we got both a buildable Dementor AND Patronus? Dobby - I would never have bought Groot nor Yoda nor the Child because they are downright creepy. BUT like a few others here: I am getting it because we all joked about Dobby's sock for years. I will be getting it for the laughs and memories.

(X. Lovegood, 3 Brothers and Death). They act out the story on stage at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter every day, so I don't think it's considered 'too dark'.

I've been struggling lately as Star wars and Marvel have improved, especially in 2021. Budgeting is going to be hard this year!!!!!!
sebastian666 Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 This will probably be the most expensive year of LEGO purchases for me too… I know I’ll end up getting all of these new Harry Potter sets (my only hard passes will be Dobby and the Brickheadz), the LOTR Rivendell set (even if it’s microscale, I’m buying it on day one), the LEGO Ideas Hocus Pocus cottage, and the best line-up in LEGO Jurassic history in honor of the film’s 30th anniversary (we’re finally getting a brachiosaurus!). I’ll probably end up getting some of the Disney 100th anniversary sets too. I wish I could buy stock in LEGO. Their profits will be through the roof this year!

Or is that speculation It's not confirmed yet, but they said that apparently this set was heavily rumored to release back in 2022, which obviously it didn't, so now it's rumored that that rumored set has been moved to 2023. Jedijacpenguin also said before the promobricks video that there were supposed to be 2 D2C's (hinting at Gringotts and the Knight bus), but that he wasn't sure if that was still on the tables "considering the sales of the Hogwarts Epxress". Whatever that means. And now that 2 D2C's are indeed confirmed with one of them being Gringotts, he once again mentioned the Knight Bus as a rumor he had known for quite some time.

Darth Shadowthrone Posted January 14, 2023 Posted January 14, 2023 Can’t wait to see Gringotts. How many goblins do you think we could expect? I’d like to see some recolours of the Griphook hair piece Expecto Patronum is very intriguing. I think if it is a diorama the stag will be a small brick-built model instead of the mould from 2019. also could the quidditch trunk have minifigure options like the trunk and table football last year? That would make me rather interested in it

The rest sound good I’d replace the Carrows with random Death Eaters and Scabior with Narcissa. Speaking of Death Eaters: would you prefer unmasked ones akin to the movie or masked ones? You probably all know my answer by now The masked ones look way more menacing and most Death Eaters are just random normal-looking people anyway. I was pretty disappointed when they dropped the masks after the Battle of the seven Potters in the movies. I do get the reason behind that creative choice; they literally dropped the mask after taking over the ministry, making the disguise no longer necessary. Makes perfect sense in the story, but I still prefer the other look It’d be like Stormtroopers suddenly going helmetless, it removes the intimidation factor somewhat

I'm not a big fan of several aspects of the final film, but that scene with McGonagall is enchanting.
