Posted February 7, 20232 yr My entry into the Classic Space Spaceship contest is the Ultrasonic Interceptor: a lightweight Space Police II craft specifically designed for optimal speed and maneuverability during pursuit of any and all perpetrators! While the Rebel Hunter is better suited for missions where heavy force is required, the Ultrasonic Interceptor is deployed when time is of the essence. The model consists of about 300 parts. In the standard configuration (more on that later) its length from wingtips to thrusters is roughly 36 studs long. Only black, light bluish grey, red, trans-(dark-)green and a bit of white were used with the exception of the minifigure and two dark bluish grey 1x2 plates with ball joint. These are sadly an essential part of the model’s look and functionality, so couldn’t be replaced by parts in original SPII colors. I tried my best to cover them up, but they’re not fully obscured from an outside view. One Sunday morning I was looking at a CCBS foot and suddenly experienced a lightbulb moment: what if I could incorporate this piece as the side of a spaceship’s cockpit? Fast forward to about 11 pm of that same day and a nearly full-fledged spaceship had been designed. Because I’d started working on the model digitally, I hadn’t yet decided on a fitting color scheme. Then another idea came into mind: perhaps one of the eligible subthemes for the CSSC had a color combination I could use? As it turns out, Space Police II is a perfect fit for this design! I gotta say I’m rather proud of the color blocking. The black and grey segments create a very uniform look, while the red and trans-green highlights emulate the messy appearance of the original Space Police II sets without being as obtrusive (because truthfully, those sets didn’t age well). However, that’s not all! My favorite feature is the foldable wings/prongs. They utilize the ball joints on the CCBS feet very effectively! There’s several joints, hinges and even sliders connecting them to the body, allowing for plenty of neat configurations to be made. Here’s a few examples: (Wing ends folded outward, prongs facing inward) (Wings folded back and out, shorter length but much wider) (Wings folded down, prongs slightly facing down as well here) (Probably my favorite: wings folded up and prongs facing marginally inward) (Rear view: wings folded outward expose extra boosters) The last requirement for contest entries was the inclusion of a smaller vehicle inside your spaceship. As you might have guessed, there was little unfilled space left in this model; and although I could’ve settled with a simple hoverboard or jetpack I opted to go a different route. I hollowed out both engine compartments, slightly rebuilt the covers to be detachable and designed a small hovercraft that splits into three small pieces just the right size to fit inside the empty spaces. (Covers removed, you can see the segments sitting in their compartments) (Subassemblies taken out, ready to be combined) (Front segments added together, rear segment reconfigured to correct position) (All done!) The Ultrasonic Interceptor comes equipped with a portable Sonar Scout. This compact yet capable hovercraft is ideal for navigating through unknown planetary environments and doubles as an easy tool for tracking down fugitives. And that’s it! I’m very happy with this MOC. There’s very few things I could improve upon and none that I think are necessary. I want to give a special thank you to Nannan Zhang, whose stellar Imperial Voidfighter greatly inspired the way I envisaged the wings on this design. And of course to the hosts of the CSSC contest too for both the opportunity as well as their ‘help’ on deciding the color scheme! Edited February 7, 20232 yr by Mr_Fikou
February 7, 20232 yr Interesting design. The big ball and socket joints for the wing supports is different.
February 7, 20232 yr I really like this. The overall shape, the main cockpit shape, the improved SP2 color scheme, and especially the engines. I always thought the SP2 color scheme was messy but I think your color blocking here fixes that. Making black primary and keeping the red as little pops of color really works. And the engines, love how the trans green is used there.

This started out as just an experiment with those CCBS feet and well, I had to use those sockets in some way! I was quite surprised how well the design turned out tbh, usually my finished products deviate a lot from the original picture in my head but not this time. 16 hours ago, danth said: I really like this. And wow, such praise I wouldn’t have ever expected. I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to respond! And yes, the engines are one of my favorite sections too, it’s such a simple technique but once I had it laid out I couldn’t stop smiling at how good it looks. 16 hours ago, the Inventor said: Great shape and functions. February 9, 20232 yr This is awesome, I feel like this spacecraft is so sleek - any number of these would make Commander FlyingGinger completely dizzy when zipping around my Frozen Freight Fractuator. And check out the minifigs posture in the cockpit, nice!
