I’ve recently been looking into CVT designs and I think they are quite interesting. I had an idea today for one using a disk piece so I put together a cheap design to demonstrate it.IMG_1324.mov

 

it doesn’t have the capacity for a large load on the output as of yet, but it’s a good foundational design.

Your link is broken.

I think CVTs will be an area of just solving more and more issues when done in bricks, as it depends of some degree of freedom in the different axis, but on the other hand it will be benefitial for it to not have too much slack overall to function.

No easy topic I believe, but all the best to find a good working solution!

That's a neat design, and looks like it might have a chance of becoming practical with enough reinforcement, which can't be said for most CVT designs!

You might be interested in taking a look at this topic, where I did a somewhat similar design, though with some important differences:

 

One way to increase the torque it can handle is to trap the wheels between two discs which are held together.
