Posted May 24, 20231 yr Hi, I made some more progress on my 42157 MOD WIP since posting in this thread Today I built a lot more of it as you can see from the images, all that is left to do now is the cabin bodywork, the front claw and its arm and also find a way to get some pistons and conrods in black in a purist way. Then it will be time to motorize it as much as possible, I think some spike prime small angular motors would be good but they are white and medium blue :O Here are some larger photos Please as always feel free to use this thread to post own MODs of this set also. June 4, 20231 yr Author Update 2.5: I decided to build a second copy to use beside my black replica (I used black because it was the closest match with the parts I currently have, for example the 3x19 girders only came in black until June 1st) I managed to get 4 of the actuators in, but had to rebuild it due to the inner two actuators needing to be moved 1L forwards compared to the original model because they could not pivot enough. This also seemed to fix a problem where the actuators wobble like crazy. I originally thought about using C+ M motors for the outer actuators but this was very problematic even in LDCAD so I have for now tried out a pair of robot inventor angular motors which unfortunately stick out a lot but the cabin needs space too 😐. My actual 42157 set should arrive tomorrow so I can at least use the new parts as well as the new green recolors and use the Daytona differentials (though I will need to add a pair of gears behind the front dozer blade thing to hook the weird Daytona gears up to the centre motor) I will use a spike prime small angular motor placed in between the two turntables to have seat rotation and the rear axle + engine will have a C+ M motor of its own for drive which gets rid of the drive shaft to save a bit of space. rear blade will be driven by 1 C+ M motor and steering will probably use a C large angular motor from my 42114 set. The claws will be driven by a pair of opposed linear actuators and a C+ M motor that's near the engine (plenty of space inside the back of the model), I actually built a mechanism for it but since space is limited I had to get clever, but it rotated one actuator in the wrong orientation 😢 I have some LEDS ill put in too and need to buy two BuWizz 3.0's, and the final mod version will be green and yellow of course. June 16, 20231 yr Author update III, using ths real set now and it is a BEAST with 8 motors in the front half alone! (one of them I don't have yet but its the spike prime small angular motor) it drives a blue clutch gear which drives a 12 tooth idler gear with side axle, this is used to rotate the seat. the motor will go behind the turntable and steering motor. Originally it was the other way round, the steering motor was driving the turntable teeth and the small angular motor was sandwiched between the turntables, but it would be impossible for one of those motors to drive 7 other motors and 6 linear actuators + more parts AND also cargo in the grabber without skipping the teeth or just stalling due to inadequate torque. I also moved the drive axle up and forwards to allow the steering axle to face the opposite way and free up a bit of space, though I think I need to flip the rotation and use a tiny slither of space to place the two drive gears, since these daytona gears cant just mesh with normal gears 😡. Also the top most 16 tooth gear is getting in the way of the rigid hoses in fhe front "rock guard" so i'll need to change something anyway. I also ran into a snag with the robot iventor medium angular motors not letting it steer due to being right up against ghe sides of the cabin bodywork so I bodged it in at a slight diagonal so that it wouldn't rub against the tires. I still want to cover the robot inventor motors up with green tiles. here's some photos: and here are larger images: https://bricksafe.com/pages/snipe/42157-mod Edited June 16, 20231 yr by SNIPE
June 16, 20231 yr Super work, looks and functions absolutely great. Can never get enough of the belly shots, love to study the mechanical workings, can't wait until this set is available to me, definitely a day one purchase. Hopefully I can make use of some of your modifications, thanks.
August 12, 20231 yr Author Current implementation to steer the fully motorized and linear actuated 42157, there wasn't enough torque to directly drive the light gray half of the turntables, and clamping a motor with a gear onto the black halves of the turn tables wouldnt be strong enough strong, and there still wont be enough torque, so this is my solution (except I think i'll use part 77107 with some rubber tires instead of these small quarter round banana gears. (But 77107 is still in the mail)). I didn't turn the motor on because it is not in stepper mode and it moves with so much force that it will probably damage something. When I get my smart hub set up ill program the motor to act as a stepper. So the green 1x3x19 girders go inbetween the two rings and this also leaves room for the little seat rotation motor (isn't it cute!) The motors contain rollers which 'clamp' onto the rings. The digital image is closer to the final version. I also properly attached the 2 medium angular motors so that they are not just bodged on and at a diagonal exis.,They *JUST* manage to clear the cabin wihen it steers The differential for the front was put in but I needed to borrow it again for another project Once the parts come I'll hopefully be able to have more of a complete model again, with 4 wheels :D Regards, SNIPE Edited August 15, 20231 yr by SNIPE
August 12, 20231 yr @SNIPE, I hate you ; now you got me an idea to make 1:15 skidder like WFTrac or similar thanks to your MODs. Honestly you made great upgrade to fully RC and specially steering is extraordinary simple, sturdy (and clever)
