I have two other entries waiting for parts to come in from Bricklink, but this one I managed to get all complete. It wasn't the first one I thought of, but it was one I knew I had to do. Cross Bone clipper was my first pirate ship, and one of my oldest sets, so I have a special fondness for it.

As you can see, it now has a cloth sail. I scanned one of my original ones, touched it up, removed the battle damage, scaled it down slightly, and printed it onto a piece of cloth that I tape to a sheet of paper. Then I glued it to another piece, cut it out, and voila!

At about 300 parts, this new version has about twice as many as the original, but is smaller.

And of course, a comparison shot.

I'm very happy with how this one turned out.

Now this is what I wanted ship wise!

This is fantastic, what a brilliant update while still being so clearly the clipper.

pros:

wonderful scale and techniques to make that work!

colour change of the deck is perfect

masting / rigging looks great

Cons:

This is tough because I really don’t have any gripes but if I really had to knit pick and it’s silly, I’d say the swords missing on the sail is about my only complaint.

All up, this is currently tied for my favourite entry so far. Would 100% buy this if released.

Thank you! I tried to do the swords, but couldn't find a satisfactory way to do it.

Was the new Disney train sail too small size wise? I think it would have been a good fit!

I don't own it, but I am 90% sure it would be too small.

Yeah Iv only seen it once in passing and never really looked again.

Seriously great build though, I actually might try and replicate this down the road.

This has to be my favourite entry so far. I like the brick built hull, and sail. The sihuette is a vast improvement, and it still has the iconic colours and features of Cross Bone Clipper. Well done!

Oh yes, the Cross Bone Clipper. Originally the ugliest pirate ship released. The black and green hull had potential for so much more, but LEGO really didn't do much with it. I admit, I don't have this set, but judging from the pictures of the set, I never regretted it.

However! Your approach to this set is excellent. I must congratulate you on the brick-built hull. The lines, the curvature, they are spot on! The green stripe around the hull looks much better than in the orignal CBC. Actually, that was quite a problem with the old hull pieces. The top part (green in this case) had nice angles where it contacted the bottom (black in this case), but from the top it had some ugly steps which required some careful building to blend in with whatever was above. This was solved nicely in some sets (like in 6271), but not so much in the CBC. Fortunately you don't have that problem, as you've used a custom hull, and your green pattern does a nice job.

The brick-built sail looks great too, it was a good idea to use tiles for the red parts and the skull. Also, it was a wise decision to use a custom cannon. Regular cannons are too big even for the standard narrow hulls, and you hull is even smaller so that was the way to go.

If I could suggest an improvement, that would be adding a rope or two to attach the bottom edge of the sail to the mast or the hull. Other than that, it's a very good-looking small ship, and with its colours one can instantly recognise the source of inspiration! Upgraded does not always mean bigger, and you've proven that. It's definitely way prettier than the original. :pir-classic:

This is just brilliant!

I think keeping the proper ships wheel piece from the original set would be an improvement you could make, but keep it in the position you have placed the wheel on your version, rather than lower down as on the original.

The colours work so well here, and I think the figurehead is much better than the original, although perhaps the skull could be a plate or two higher.

Great job!

I love it! There's not much I can say that others already have I would only like to see how it would look with new fabric sailsbut other than that it's a very charming and well done remake of a smaller ship.

@Elephant Knight is this a custom printed OG Jolly Roger I see there waving on top? :jollyroger: Or is it a sticker? Cool idea! :pir-thumb: The whole build is just lovely, works especially fun as an opponent to the remade Trading Ship from 10320, which makes me wanna get the instructions for your Cross Bone Clipper sometime down the road :pir-wink:

I'm not huge fan of brick-sails, but your skull on them is simply great! Well done! :pir-thumb:

Neither, actually. It's a regular flag that I took a red sharpie to the outside.

I don't plan on making instructions, I never have, but I certainly can take some blown up shots to see the building techniques.

I'm not really either, but I'm getting a backlog of MOCs that need some sails made, and I was feeling lazy. They are pretty much based on the Creator pirate ship 3 in 1, including the skull.

If you'd be so kind, sir, yes, I'd appreciate it a lot :pir-thumb:

This is so much better than the original!  Love the curved back.  Easily the best ship in this contest so far, maybe the best entry.  I struggle to find things to complain about here -- the only thing that I notice is the cannon, there are a lot of designs for small brick-built canons that are smoother than what you've got here, I would swap it out for one of those.

That sharpied flag is quite creative, too.  I am generally not one for modifying pieces, but it looks fantastic.

This one is amazing! Great entry. Can't think of any cons!

I'm usually pretty trepid myself about modifying parts, but sometimes I just need something that Lego doesn't produce. And I ended up using an already damaged flag, as one of the clips was already broken, so I didn't feel as bad.

I do agree there are a lot of cannon designs out there, but I am partial to this one, as it is my own design.

A really good build

Theme

-This looks like a small merchant vessel the pirates seized, and it has enough room to actually be quite useful for play, but it'd replace the cannon with a design using stud shooters (see @Eggyslav's excellent example for inspiration), since it would add play value, finally just consider a storage spot (maybe using hinges) under the captain's bridge as a way to smuggle! Now overall this design is really detailed (and even my critiques aren't strong-there's a storage barrel on board).

Just one question-is there any treasure in that barrel @Elephant Knight

Build

You sneaky one! You said you weren't planning a ship build for the contest, not that I'm disappointed you changed your mind. The hull looks good, but there is that one gap on the side-either replace that green part with a black one or modify the hull to hide it.

Finally, the colour scheme is done flawlessly, with a clever hull technique, a decenty realistic set of proportions, and some good play features-I'd just recommend (for your sake) making the sails out of cloth, this would be more work, but it would do well amongst the voting populace...

I did put a couple of gems in the barrel, yes. a Pirate's got to have booty! Adding a hidey hole under the stern... didn't think about that. I'm going to tinker with it later.

If I did hide that bit of green on the outer hull, then the inner wall wouldn't be green, due to this part being used to help keep the railing attached. IT could be swapped with black, but I didn't have any available. I might have some of these in black, but then I would loose the green on the inside, which I like.

I'll see what I can do about a cloth sail, but I am unsure how I can get a skull on it. I've printed on cloth before with my old printer, and had mixed results. Have yet to test with my new one. And I'm no artist. Hmm.....

Maybe consider using a slightly different arrangement for the front of the hull, the current piece looks nice but a mix of slopes and sloped plates like for the sides might cover that gap, this is arguably a problem in real sets too so quite fitting considering the goal of the competition.

Well, you can always go with an existing design of pirate sails. Also, if you have the budget for it, maybe consider using one of those custom Lego sail websites, although they're 20$+ a pop, so this is just an idea.

I went ahead and made a custom sail, I feel it turned out great, I'll have pictures up later this day. I did end up coving that bit of green that was poking through, the slight change on the inside of the ship is hardly noticeable, but looks a lot better on the outside. I also noticed a tiny bit or red poking through as well, fixed that up as well.

I doubt I would buy custom sails when I can just make my own, though those prices are better then most official Lego sails, I bet. Some of them are getting quite pricey!

AS per your suggestion, I added a little cubby below the stern where the pirates can store some ill gotten gains, as well as updating the cannon as another used suggested.

The original set was a bit lacking in the aesthetic department for sure.  Your remake is solid. Great job.

One thing about this set is that crows nest piece is extremely expensive on Bricklink.com as it was only released in this set in this color.

https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=30033&idColor=5#T=S&C=5&O={"color":5,"iconly":0}

If you were to include it on your remake, it would instantly increase the bounty it would receive on the open seas!

I would love to, but yeah, the cost is very high. I've been wanting to acquire more for years for reasons like this. I do own two, but as you can see above, they are both used on the original ship.

Sorry to double post, but I've updated it again, just a small one, with a better sail. I printed it onto some canvas, and it looks WAY better than the previous cloth one.
