MyFirstMOC-Hun Posted July 7, 2023 Posted July 7, 2023 (edited) Hello! This time I reworked the 6254 Rocky Reef set for the Classic Pirates tournament. There are two pirates and a skeleton in the set. The island and the cave were once inhabited by natives, but the pirates felt it would be a great island to hide their treasure and took over the place. The only traces of the ancient inhabitants are the small totem detail left at the back of the cave and the skeleton in the cave. Of course, what pirates would they be if they didn't have a little place to hide an emerald right now. The roof of the cave can also be removed for playability, and there is a small jetty on the island, if you bring supplies for the two pirates by boat, you can untie it. Horation Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 Charming-if a bit large Theme A nice rocky hideout, with a lot of space, some useful commodities and quite a few accessories, but it is lacking play features, with no cannon in a 600 pieces set, and no opponents (soldiers, crocodiles, etc...). I do like the inclusion of an islander statue, as it makes the island's purpose clearer. Question for you @MyFirstMOC-Hun, is there a structural reason why the whole roof can't be removed? if not please consider increasing the number of parts that are removable so it's easier to access the inside. Alternatively making the whole rocky outcrop removable could work, as you suggest with one of your pictures. Build The colours are appropriate, but the rocks are too uniform, the added foliage mostly does the job but changing the colour of the bottom rocks to dark grey would be perfect for such a build. There are a few right angles with the sand but that's hard to fix so I can forgive it. The foliage is effective, the details are realistic, there's not a lot going on but what is going on looks good. Thank you! Yes, it is a bit big compared to the original, which also had no cannon, no more figures, no crocodile. That's why I didn't do it either. There was a boat in the original, but I left it out because it wouldn't have fit in the water, and if I put it next to it, it would have been a problem. I also thought about the cannon, but that didn't fit either, except on the pier, but I didn't like that. You can't remove the top of the rock any better because it's built on a cast-in formal rock element and it's designed that way. I took the complete rock wall off for the picture, but I'll see how this could be done in real life, but it will certainly increase the number of elements. I think about this every time I build a rock face, switching to DBG where sea water is supposed to touch it. But then I just don't like it that way. So it always stays LBG. I couldn't squeeze more things onto the island, so even sometimes it feels crowded. Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 As I've mentioned before, I'm not a big fan of the big rounded slope for the sand shore even if it's the more LEGO way to do it. It really looks too unnatural of a shape to me. But I must admit that the first layer of plates under the slopes takes a lot of that away and looks much better for my taste! Would still like to see an entry doing the shore just with plates instead of these large slope pieces ... But I don't understand the two layers of water. That looks a bit funny. Otherwise a nice entry! Quote

Otherwise a nice entry! The two layers of water are necessary because the tiles of the right size for the floor area were not available in this colour. So with the bottom layer and the plates underneath, I can make sure that the elements don't splatter during the actual construction. I like this solution anyway, which is why I use it so much. It will be the same for the project I'm working on now. And I promise, I will have a project where I solve the shore with a non-slope 😉 Quote
Rogue Redcoat Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Looks great especially the rock formation and the tiny dock. As always I do have some suggestions, first, the water I believe should just be one layer and not two (on the other hand the sand looks perfect!). Secondly, I don't think the whole rock should be removed that easily (even if it is for playability) Overall the entry looks awesome (dare I say the best so far!) Anyway, Happy building :) Quote
Interactive Bricks Posted July 20, 2023 Posted July 20, 2023 You did a great job bringing 6254 Rocky Reef to life. The trees and and greenery really bring this rebuild into this century. Hard to believe the OG is almost 30 years old! I like the hidden inclusion of the statue (love me some gold frogs!). When I look at the original, the skeleton shows prominently in the promo picture, as if it is staring down the pirates, waiting for them to take and nap so he can nab their treasure. I was a little disappointed that the skeleton was not readily seen until the very end. It's a simple thing, but it really sets the tone. If there was a way to make the cave less cave-like (ie take off the roof) and more like a split rock, I think that would go a long way in recapturing the aesthetic of the original. Of course, what you've done looks really great. Hiding the green gem in rock adds a fun playability feature. You've taken the original basic build and elevated it to a full-fledged island retreat! Horation Posted July 21, 2023 Posted July 21, 2023 Quick question @MyFirstMOC-Hun, are those flowers at the top of the rocks in grey? It looks a little abnormal, will you consider making those flowers something like red or yellow, they'd pop out more and give some life to the build Quote

iragm Posted July 21, 2023 Posted July 21, 2023 An interesting build, I do enjoy looking at these. I like the rockwork with the plants, but I dislike that the rocks don't open like the original set. It makes this kind of a downgrade from the original. If it wasn't a remake, I think I'd like it a lot more, as overall this design is quite nice. The islander statue face is clever and a wonderful detail. On 7/9/2023 at 3:21 PM, MyFirstMOC-Hun said: I like this [two plate thickness water] solution anyway, which is why I use it so much. I have to say that multiple people have now commented that they dislike the look of this technique; water just doesn't have multiple layers. I'd investigate other solutions; turn the water into waves, make the top layer dark tan instead, use different sized plates. You're a very talented builder, try something different! Quote
Mazin Posted August 17, 2023 Posted August 17, 2023 Great design again! You should start a lego landscaping academy, cause i'm always surprised how good Your work can be with plants, rocky elements, sand, and there's so much life in here. I don't think that this island even needs a jetty, perhaps a boat would be more useful, but i like it anyway. It sort of creates this lazy atmosphere and i guess we can't have them always fighting and plotting against each other ;) I like that those hanging creeper create a sort of bead curtain in an entry to the cave, it's one of those details You didn't have to add, but it only enhanced thevalue of this set. I wonder if this could be made in a way to resemble a read bead curtain tho, cause right now those minifigs probably have to make a bit of an effort to get into that cave. And taking about accesibility of the cave's interiot, removable roof is always a great idea, but it still looks that it won't be easy to play inside it as that opening from the top is rather small. I'm curious abaout that separate minirock in the water, does have any play features? Does it have any role in this set? Can't seem much from these angles, but is it only a decorative piece? Or is there a secret stash in there as well? Certainly looks intriguing, as if it wasn't left there without any purpose ;) And excelent characters again, Your choices of minifigs are another inviting factor to becoming owners of this set. And that inslander totem is just hilarious, i woudln't even cover that with leaves :) It would be even cooler if that tongue could trigger any playfeature, like if you'd pull it it could reveal a secret entry to the cave, or a forgotten drinks bar hidden behing the totem, since Your pirates love bottles so much ;) Quote
