@ord Well spotted, I didn't notice that. It does look like the axle holes are 45 degrees out of phase. I wonder why they did that? I guess it would make 4 and 6 speed designs easier as you can just stack them in the same orientation and the 45 degree alignment is already done automatically. For an 8 speed however, if you just stack them, position D of the first rotary cam overlaps position A of the last rotary cam. But it should still be possible to get all 8 positions by flipping two of the cams.....I think!

Yep. And in my experience giving credit to original postings is a thing of any good community's etiquette.

Next time if you have in your opinion golden photos, put a watermark on it with your name before you post them. Then people don't need to bother crediting a photo taken from the internet on a public forum, it's not a news agency here. You could have sold them as a NFT instead of sharing them (oh no, it was Sariel's or another one's video).

Anyway, very nice to see these new elements. I wonder how well they will work in a powered model, but soon enough people will try this out I guess.

Perhaps this new gearbox could be used to operate 4/8 pneumatic valves with just 2 motors in a small footprint. That's one thing I would try out, as I want to make a MOC with 20 individual valves+cylinders, but not using 20motors.

Hmm as these are 2 studs wide, maybe the axle hole doesn't run through, but the axle can only go in 1 stud either way (like the usual axle connectors 6538c.t1.png). But 1 end is offset by 45°?

Sorry if the question had been already asked, but why were the reviews deleted? They occured too early?

Apparently the embargo date was changed at the last minute, but not everyone got the memo.

Seems Lego didn't learn from last year's Optimus Prime "leak" :laugh:

The Lego company should be legally sued by the creative Eurobricks community for blatantly stealing and patenting their brilliant gearbox idea. Not giving credit to the designers of the round wheel. Especially I now deserve MILLIONS on my bank account! I hope everybody can feel my bitter irony about the rainbow factory. We and CaDA will counter that move, promised!

Set a trap nextime... get a ww IP and then let the Lego idiots copy it into production & only then hit them hard... "play fair" and so on...

With the 135° separation, I do not think 4 consecutive positions is possible, though 6 or 8 is.

@brunojj1 O wow! Let's sue everyone...:pir_tong2:

@ everyone:

Does anybody know when the emborgo on the set will be lifted?

Not sure if I can tell. They might sue me :wink:

Early next week probably.

Thanks. I wonder why as well, but it hurts my head to think about. I suppose they probably designed this part with a more complicated (8 speed?) gearbox in mind, so I'm interested to see how that will look!

As @allanp mentioned, it appears that BCEFGH are neutral on the rotary catch while D is left and A is right (in this view).

The two catches are 45° out of phase, which would make the 8 positions:
AH = right/neutral
BA = neutral/right
CB = neutral/neutral
DC = left/neutral
ED = neutral/left
FE = neutral/neutral
GF = neutral/neutral
HG = neutral/neutral

However, it appears that the right hand catch cannot shift left as its connected driving ring is restricted by a blue liftarm. So, my guess is that the mechanism is somehow restricted to these positions:
AH = right/neutral      (3rd gear)
BA = neutral/right      (2nd gear)
CB = neutral/neutral   (Neutral gear)
DC = left/neutral        (1st gear)

This would give a 3 speed gearbox, with neutral above 1st gear as on a real motorbike.

What do you guys think?

Ooh, thanks for the analysis! The fact that you see four neutral positions seems like a clear indication that those four positions could be turned into gears by using a second pair of catches.

So I think this is likely!

Indeed it's a brain workout. You can also flip the cam so positions A and D (if A is at the top and you rotate about the vertical axis) is now lined up with positions A and F. You then rotate that second one 90 degrees on the axle so they line up with positions C and G. So now you have A, C, D and G covered, so now .....to cover B, E, F, and H....you need to....because the shaft is offset 45 degrees so....um.....Allanp.exe has stopped working. I could just grab a pen and paper and work it out but the brain needs exercise too ya know! But yes, as it seems quite difficult to make a four speed, it seems much more geared towards a 6, 7 or 8 speed, which is more realistic anyway.

you need to

No flipping required. AD, CF, EH, GB.

Or,  for six consecutive speeds: AD, BE, CF, with the BE being a flip.

As far as I can figure, four consecutive gears from two selectors is not possible.

IMO one of the best ways to figure out if a gearbox concept will work is physical building and error, but theorizing is fun too :classic:. I wonder what the second stepper gear (third photo) is used for?

My guess would be that one of them engages with the shifting mechanism, while the other one is used to make it snap into position.

It looks quite cool, but compared to the BMW this looks very “cheap”. Which it’s not, because it has an RRP of €230 for less than 1500 pieces. I do really look forward to having the new gearbox pieces though. I’ll probably buy it at some point, but only with a substantial discount (€130-€140 at most).

Will be hard not to buy it I really like how it looks. And although I am a car guy I am starting to get sick of all the cars. :classic:

I'm a little late to the party and what a feast it is! So many cool new gearbox parts that I could cry. As a motorcycle rider a must have set for me. The price is a little steep, but new parts also cost money to develop.
But I do wonder why the video reviews were not yet released if the official pictures are out. Anyway, here is one source that never cares about embargo's:

P.S. The LEGO Model Designer of this set is Lars Thygesen: https://brickset.com/sets/list-41122

This set is a day1 buy for me, I didnt get the BMW cause well, its new parts were mostly specialized, but since this has new parts that I can use in many different MOCS.... yeah - gonna be an expensive year for me.

Thanks @R0Sch for posting the video review.
