Mandalorianknight Posted February 13, 2024 Author Posted February 13, 2024 I just finished the Ornithopter today. It may be one of the best sets I've ever built. The thing is HUGE for the price, looks incredible, and has a real presence in the room it's in. The figs are also excellent, almost every major character is here in the one set. I'd say it's like a 9/10 with just couple minor gripes, some of which are more subjective than objective. The color matching here can be rough. The blue pins and red axles are fine, but there's a lime piece that you can see pretty clearly from some angles that's just a 1x2 brick. The figures are nearly perfect, but I would have much preferred Stilgar to Kynes (aside from just the fact that he leads the Fremen more directly, that "I don't care what you believe, I BELIEVE" from the trailer for Dune 2 is an incredible line delivery and the character deserves a figure), and I would rather have had Paul and Jessica with stillsuit masks on the other sides of their heads. I made a small display for the figures just using some tan parts for sand, with the Baron floating behind. It's truly an incredible set. I truly hope we get more Dune, just for my love of the franchise and wanting characters like Stillgar and the Sardukar, but they won't be able to match the engineering that went into this thing. hikouki Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 I wonder what set they might do next? Another vehicle, or perhaps a scenery? The worm? Quote

Unfortunately I don't know if there is a next. This is the icons subline, not a full dune theme, and there aren't many iconic designs besides the ornithopter (Plus, the fact that they went out of their way to include almost every major character and every major outfit makes me think that at least at the time of the ornithopter's design, nothing was in place.) If the ornithopter does well, I'd like to see a diorama set of Shai Halud's maw with Paul standing in front. But what I'd want most is battle packs for each house/faction. Fremen, Sardukar, Atreides, and Harkennon. But I don't think we'll see anything for a few years- probably at most something in 2026/2027 to sync up with a movie based on the second novel, if they're planning that. Quote
LegendaryArticuno Posted February 18, 2024 Posted February 18, 2024 I'm tempted to buy the Ornithopter but it's way too big. Really wish they reduced the size significantly and used the parts for a stand instead. Quote

BrickMonkeyMOCs Posted February 20, 2024 Posted February 20, 2024 I think one further oversight in this set, given how only a couple of the minifigures can be placed inside the cockpit, is the absence of 2x3 minifig display plates for the remaining figures. This would have been a very easy and inexpensive addition. Quote
Mandalorianknight Posted March 1, 2024 Author Posted March 1, 2024 Dune part two may legitimately be the greatest film I've ever seen. It's also probably less appropriate than part one- there's more graphic violence and a couple scenes that are a bit suggestive. But that said, the film is GOOD. And it's tracking to make a fair chunk of change. I think ultimately the chances of more sets will be dependent on sales of the Ornithopter.... but I also think sales of the Ornithopter might get a bump this weekend. Quote

The question is though, what else they would do. The most obvious idea is a sandworm-riding diorama, even though it’d have to be microscale to make any sense There are other vehicles too, sure, but while they’re well-designed, they’re not quite as recognisable as the ornithopter That said, I definitely wouldn’t say no to more sets! Part 2 was really impressive, even more so than the first one. Now I’m hoping for Dune Messiah to be adapted as well! Please stop after that though, I don’t need to see Leto II as a sandworm hybrid , as hilarious as that would be Quote

I think they could pull off riding a smaller one. I've wanted for awhile a diorama with Paul and Lady Jessica staring down the sandworm from part one, with the sandworm's maw structured sort of like the outline of the palpatine's throne room diorama. I think another good option would be a playscale version of the gunship ornithopter with the pintle mounted gun- Spoiler the one Paul and Chani take out near the start. As for that last bit, seeing Spoiler how much they've deviated the story already- in good ways, IMO I honestly think it's anyone's guess what is or isn't in a Dune Messiah film, at least in terms of details like that. Seasider Posted March 2, 2024 Posted March 2, 2024 Just finished my Ornithopter, I did quite a large recolour but kept the construction the same as the original. The only place I deviated was the hinges to mount the cockpit side glass where I used 2 1x2 hinge plates instead of a 1x4 hinge plate so I could get this in DBG. I’m off to see part 2 next Wednesday, IMAX of course. I think Part 3, Messiah, will be inevitable as Part 2 has amazing reviews so as long as the box office returns are good it’ll be made. If they’re to do another Dune set then only thing I’d want would be a Sandworm. Quote

Well, Messiah has none of the really weird stuff yet. That only happens from the fourth book onwards That‘s probably why Villeneuve insists that he doesn‘t want to tackle anything beyond Messiah I still doubt we’ll see another set, but I certainly wouldn’t say no to that! badbob001 Posted March 4, 2024 Posted March 4, 2024 (edited) When pressing the wing-flapper, the mechanism rubs against the 2x3 plate next to it on the the tail-ward side and causes the plate to loosen. Happen to anyone else? Not super impressed with the wing-flapping. It basically gives the wings a nudge against gravity and you have to build up a persistent rhythm to get meaningful flaps. It's beautiful like that, congratulations. I'm about to order mine. Old Master Posted March 6, 2024 Posted March 6, 2024 Hopping on here to just express what many of you have already said - the Ornithopter is incredible, Dune 2 was breathtaking, and WE WANT MORE DUNE LEGO!!!!!! If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say the Ornithopter is flying off shelves everywhere. The hype for Dune is just too real atm and the value of the set is really tremendous. Lego could certainly see this and extend Dune into it's own theme in the future, hopefully sooner rather than in correspondence of the release of Messiah in god knows how long. Certainly biased as a minifigure collector, but a Dune CMF would be great in part because I just don't know how many other sets you can get out of these two films. I would really love Maud'Dib version of Paul, Stilgar, Feyd Rautha, Rabban, Emperor, and Princess Irulan figures still! Also, put Paul's head on Kynes's body. I think he looks much cooler like this As for a Maud'Dib purist upgrade, this head, though pricey, would look fantastic Quote

Yeah it annoyed me that you could see tan, white and even lbg when looking around the model so I tried to convert as much to dbg or black as possible, trying to choose the colour based off where it is on the model. Makes the model look a lot more finished. Things like the red underneath the cockpit annoyed me. as the most basic I’d switch out I’d switch the ball pins to black, any 2l axles to black and also the lbg perpendicular connectors on the wing roots to black.
