Wrinkledlion X Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 2006 was largely new pieces as well. And yeah, I'm hoping 2009 brings some simplicity and... Ambiguity. We know it takes place over about a month, so there's probably a lot of room for the imagination to fill it in- Especially given that we have relatively little story. Just comics, one book, and a movie. That's more than 2001, but it's still a small enough amount for it to work.
ShaddowCroc Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I just realized something- In '01-'03, we all thought the Turaga to be incredibly wise, and all-knowing beings. But in all truth; the things they knew were common Matoran knowledge in Metru Nui (Pre-Cataclysm). So the only thing that seperated the turaga from any other matoran on Mata Nui was that they remembered things from Metru Nui. It's sort of weird how drastically the story's changed, and everything's turned upside down.
Wrinkledlion X Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Well, remember that Whenua was an Archivist and Nokama was a teacher, so I think they still knew a lot more than average... Plus Vakama had visions and Nuju could read the stars well.
Dark_Avenger Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 They also underwent the trials of being Toa for a good chunk of time, and add the thousand years of experience leading the Matoran villages under less-than-ideal circumstances, I'd say they're much wiser and more weathered than the average Matoran.
JINZONINGEN73 Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Grevious post Yesterday, 05:32 PM Woah - careful now. By saying that, you're also dreaming for the erasement of 2001 as well - which seems to be the real sacred cow here. Naw, 2001 was a great time. They didn't need to do much different for me at that point. Well, maybe give them freaking HANDS. Once I saw the design on the Nuva masks, everything went in the crapper. Same with Star Wars. End it at Empire, then just release a bunch of "strange" figures from a movie that never existed. Nostalgia probably has something to do with it, but I maintain that it was 2001's relative simplicity that MADE it the best. Nowadays the storyline is a headache to follow. You can call it deep, I call it a jumbled mess. RIGHT. Those old, simple, nearly silent film-like flash movies (well, cinema intermissions) were the shit. That's what bionicle was, and it was ferocious and awesome. Then they made an awful, expensive, CGI kiddy movie and... yeah... no. lol
Bundalings Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Then Bionicle came out. At first, the sets were only impressive because there were just SO MANY new parts- virtually every piece on the Toa olda were completely new, besides axles and such. (A worthwhile point to make- after the Bohrok we haven€™t really had a year with totally new pieces.) Besides the awesome MOCing potential, the design of the Toa was just such a huge leap from the primitive Throwbots. For visual aid: 2006 was practically all new as well, like Gunnar pointed out. Personally I like the convoluted/deep story they have currently. Not that I don't want 2009, no, I'm glad they starting over, to an extent. In a way they're making the story more convoluted; instead of just introducing new islands and concepts like in 2004, they're introducing entirely new planets! ~Bunda
Ikki o' Moopyville Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 What I like about the current Bionicle mythos is that there are sort of two levels of depth to the story, one main plot that's easy to follow, and then all the extra from the serials and the like. Take this year, for instance. Toa versus Makuta in Karda Nui, save Matoran, find Keystones, awaken the Great Spirit. Even the Makuta's grand scheme could be explained in a line or two. Then, if you're into the deeper universe, the books and serials offered tales from the birth of the Toa Mata to the new adventures of Toa and Matoran all over. I do wish all serials and side-stories would be at the same pace as the Mata flashbacks and BIA, though -- Dark Mirror and Destiny War are just all over and with pretty much none detail. Even so, I love the simple outline of this year. That's where particularly 2005 and 2007 suffered IMO, and somewhat the latter half of 2006 too (I remember reading Island of Doom, though -- agreed with Gunnar, the year started off on a fantastic note, save some aspects of the Piraka! =P). I'm hoping for a straightforward story next year too -- something along the lines of the opposing tribes each sending their best warriors, the Glatorian, to fight off Tuma's rock tribe legions. For serials, anything that delves into Agori culture would be a most welcome thing! Having said that, I hope a lot of the mythical feel that was lacking during teh first half of this year returns to glory in 2009. It would fit right in. -Ikk
---Vertea--- Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Hello, Greg! Hope your autumn is going good. I had a few more questions on the coming year and some on this year so as not to be a complete waste of time. biggrin.gifWithout further ado, the questions: 1)"Leading his rock tribe legions on a quest to conquer all of Bara Magna, Tuma is a massive warrior and master of the sword and spiked Thornax launcher. Cruel and warlike, Tuma will rule the planet or see it ground to dust" This quote, while being incredibly intriguing has yet to be verified as true. Can you tell us if it is accurate? 2) Because I am working on a Glatorian poster for the coming year, I wanted to know if you could tell me any two 2009 characters that could be depicted fighting each other without any inaccuracies? You see, I don't want to submit a poster of two beings locked in combat that turn out to be allies-that would be just a tad embarrassing. smile.gif 3) Is there any way to know if a Thornax is going to explode or is it kind of a luck of the draw kind of thing? 4) Is there a reason the Bone-Hunters eat Thornax? 5) Does Teridax have anything to gain from killing any of the Toa Nuva? 6) Are the 'things' Takanuva is hiding from beings or machines we have seen before? 7) Do you watch (or rather did you watch) Futurama? 8) Do you know the name of the new artist for the new comic? 9) Are there any dangerous wildlife on Bara Magna? 10) Is Bara Magna older than the Great Beings? 11) All of the Bioniclestory.com serials go up to 9, right? If so, how many will take place after Teridax's reign? 12) Is Agori the species name? 13) how tall would a matoran be in comparison to an Agori? And thus concludes my questions. More 2009 questions than others, but the 'next year fever' has me! Till next time, ---CWV--- 1) I can't discuss, it relates to 2009 story 2) The black and green Glatorian can, as they fight in the first comic -- but reasonably, any two Glatorian can fight in the arena, because it's not about being friends or enemies. It's a job. 3) You can get a pretty good idea if you know when it was harvested or you harvested it yourself 4) Um, they're hungry? 5) No. 6) Yes 7) No, never did 8) Pop Nhan 9) Yes 10) Most likely, yes 11) No, the text serials go up to 10. None of them will include content post TFB, I don't think. 12) You'll find out in 2009 13) I don't have measurements for them
Ikki o' Moopyville Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 (edited) According to his own site, so it is! DAMN he is good! -Ikk Edited November 25, 2008 by Ikki o' Moopyville
Tyranide Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 (edited) HELL YEAH. Except for this Avohkii oO Edited November 25, 2008 by Tyranide
Brickthing Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Gali's foot looks like an Avohkii as well...
Nightmare Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 (edited) Well guys, it's just one piece of art. I'm sure he will do a little better for the real thing. Anyways, Pop (the artist, not the music ) is good. I like the desingn of Krika and Antroz. Though that Ignika is strange. Oh, a bit that some might have skipped about Tuma: Leading his rock tribe legions on a quest to conquer all of Bara Magna, Tuma is a massive warrior and master of the sword and spiked Thornax launcher. Cruel and warlike, Tuma will rule the planet or see it ground to dust. Edited November 25, 2008 by Nightmare

Zarathos Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I'm digging the new artist. Finally going to get a tried comic book artist. Sayger did a few covers, but he's just completely insignificant compared to this! -Z
Refia Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 That image needs more Toa Ignika and even more Skyboard. =p
Zarkan Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 That new art is awesome. Very detailed and has extremely dramatic angles. Sure, it has a few minor porportion and detail mistakes, but they're nothing compared to the errors Sayger made. I'll never forget his butchering of Turaga Vakama in "Death of a Hero."
Ikki o' Moopyville Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Aw, Vakama looked awesome there... at least he didn't just copy a movie picture like Leigh did. >_> Sayger remains my second favorite Bionicle artist, almost up there with good ol' D'Anda. This one looks rather good too, though! -Ikk
Tyranide Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Looks like this guy drew manga in his previous life. The angles he use are very similar to ones that real manga drawers use. And I like it. Gallagher's style was to... dry? Dunno how to say it. Like he drew with a book "How to draw comics". They were too similar to all other comics I've read.
Pencoin Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Now I will read that der comics, Canonness and now Manganess = pure win.
Bundalings Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 According to his own site, so it is! DAMN he is good! -Ikk Very nice! I hope that: 1) The colorist doesn't butcher it. He probably will. 2) the actual comics he does look as good as this. Aw, Vakama looked awesome there... at least he didn't just copy a movie picture like Leigh did. >_> Sayger remains my second favorite Bionicle artist, almost up there with good ol' D'Anda. This one looks rather good too, though!-Ikk I agree. I kinda liked Sayger's style. Very chaotic and abstract, I thought perfect for those years. D'anda's still my fave so far. ~Bunda
iLego94 Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 New art is WIN, but Leigh was better :) Anyways on the Death of a Heropage, the first close up of vakama was freaking amazing, the shading was great, and the mask was perfect. The final panel looked like a 3 year-old drew it. ~iLego94
Phantoka_Chirox Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 New art is WIN, but Leigh was better :) ~iLego94 Yea I like Leigh better too :D
---Vertea--- Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I don't mind this new guy's style. It has detail yet still keeps some exaggeration. Though the first artist was by far the best.
