THIS! Licensed sets are cool and all, but Lego has REALLY gone off the railroad recently... So many Technic sets are now licensed for the sake of outer appearence rather than functionality which destroys the whole point of Technic, and yet are labled as "18+" (I'm looking at you 42125). I'd rather have a single unlicensed set than a billion super cars which are have the same functions... Quote

Almost every function is directly connected with knob or cross only 2~3 gears. Other sets is same except only 42179 orrery. You're complaining about the January-March sets that are usually smaller and mostly targeting kids. How many more "functional" sets we got last year in the same period? 42152 Firefighter Aircraft had some tricks but the 42181 VTOL will have at least as many if not more. Quote

That's agreeable, but on the other hand, the majority that's into Technic is all of us Lego fans who are for sets that can combine functionality and looks in balanced way (licensed or not). I don't really see the point of people that aren't that much into Lego casually buying something in the standard of 42125, considering they could buy some model/diecast/collectible thingy (edit again, my bold font here is stuck specifically in this section of the comment), considering well... it's Technic and system cars are more recognizable to most, at least imho Edited December 7, 2023 by PlopiNinetySix Quote

For us AFOLs 42125 is of course totally uninteresting as a Technic model with its severe lack of functionality. My hope would be that the licenced sets would have some nice functions rather than the repeated empty shell models we've been getting. On the other hand, some of them include some nice recolours (especially panels) and whatever the case, I don't have to buy it if I don't like it. The upcoming space lineup is already more than enough to fill my buying needs for a long while. Quote

The number of gimmicks themselves is sufficient for last year, this year, and next year. What I am disappointed with is the way the gimmick is connected. Almost all gimmicks are connected through one or two gears, or directly connected to a knob,(even don't have latch on winch) or most gimmicks do not even have a knob and are supported by the friction of the pin. And compared to last year's smallest models, the dump truck and snowplow, which had 3 and 4 gimmicks respectively,(Including rolling wheel/tracks) this year's smallest model, the bulldozer, only has 2 gimmicks, which are like polybags, as others have said? P.S - And this is why I rating 42146 LR 13000 as worst model of entire technic history. Edited December 8, 2023 by msk6003 Quote

Yep, can't argue with that- (the thing I meant about diecast models wasn't specifically Lego-related, but rather some other companies selling these supercar/licensed models that could look prettier than a Technic set to most non-fans; (that's not the best comparison actually) but since we know Lego won't release such items/sets in the future, I get your point); -these still appeal to many for the tons of dfferent panels and curved pieces in various colors that are a great pieces source to similar MOC supercars/other related vehicles (also bcuz they're cool cars, forgot to add that). I think a lack of (new/novel) functions in some sets is one of those issues you mostly only notice if you've been buying Technic sets for a good long while. For a 10 to 16-year-old kid just getting into the theme, it doesn't particularly matter if the only functions are tried-and-true ones like a V8 engine and working steering, since even those sorts of basic functions will be new to them if they're just graduating from regular Lego. And ultimately, there's probably more of that sort of buyer for some of these sets (including flashy licensed sets like Ferrari) than there are AFOL buyers who already have years and years worth of Technic experience. That's not to discount your frustration, just pointing out that as a longtime fan it can be easy to lose sight of how even basic sorts of functions can still be impressive to certain people. Quote

You're right, though I can't help but wonder what the pre-teen/teen kids getting a 42125 think of all the emptiness inside. Do they think that "this is really awesome"? Or "I wish there was more stuff inside"? Or something else? After my years of darkness (all 25 of them) as the first set I bought 42055 and I was in awe by the ingenuinity and possibilities of Technic at the time. The next thing I bought was 42096 and I was disappointed and dismayed by the boring build experience and the almost static nature of the model. I disassembled it within hours of completing the build and I guess it was a nice parts pack for someone with not many parts but other than that completely worthless as a Technic set. At least I got it with a significant discount. As an adult I could deal with the disappointment and concentrate my future buying on sets that have some actually interesting functions but as a teenager I would probably have kept admiring my BWE and forgot about the rest of Technic. Do they think that "this is really awesome"? Or "I wish there was more stuff inside"? Or something else? It really depends. What I've learned through my years of reviewing is that every set has fans and haters. And even if I think something is "not good enough", there are a lot of people who really love that set and don't understand why I'm so picky. And for that same set, there are people who think I'm way too lenient on this build. People have different expectations and different levels of experience. What doesn't make you happy might make someone else happy, and that shouldn't be held against them either. Quote

Jundis Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 (edited) Just checked brickset for the amount of models per year (with polybag): 14 models in 2017 to 2020 15 models in 2021 17 models in 2022 18 models in 2023 So far, we have 14 models we know by number and name for 2024. The missing numbers are 42165 and 42172 to 42177, which would pump the number up to 21! Edited December 12, 2023 by Jundis Quote
AVCampos Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Wow, with all those single-hand controls, 42181 deserves to be promoted to Patron Saint of Swooshability! Quote

legoturtle Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 I think sets go more and more complicated. B-models take time and money to make. We all have probably used too good things. I would say those all 3 are classics already. Quote
