Captain Stef Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Ahoy landlubbers! Here is my remake of one of the classic LEGO Pirates sets. I wanted to remake the 6277 Imperial Trading Post for this contest, but because of me not having as much LEGO bricks as I would have liked, I ran out of pieces at the first building. Then I went to a LEGO museum with my dad and there was a LEGO Pirates exposition! I got a whole lot of inspiration and there was the first time I saw this set: number 6263, the “Imperial Outpost”. I loved it immediately and when I got home, I started building. The original LEGO set has some play features I wanted to keep in my remake of it, think of the secret storage in the floor and the function to break out of the prison. But I also wanted to put some more play features in it, like the rock with the treasure in it and the secret space under the bed in the prison, where imprisoned pirates can store weapons. The original set contained 4 minifigures (2 Imperial soldiers, 1 Imperial admiral and 1 pirate) and one rowboat, but I added one more pirate and a raft. If you have any questions about my remake, ask them and I will try to answer them all! Quote
Horation Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 Theme Good thinking for that extra pirate and raft ; it adds much needed playability to the set. The extra play features make this stand out from the competition which often refuses to do more than a nice looking facade with nothing to play with. Literally all of my list of requirements is covered : variety of figs, animal life, hidden treasure, a working canon, two water vessels and an escape feature in that jail cell. Build The build captures the essence of 1990s sets quite well, and I like the windows, but it could use some extra details, like some dark red on the walls and some ornate details under and on the ramparts would give you a fighting chance against those with hyper-detailed builds. I’m glad to hear that you’re liking it so far! You gave me a very good tip, but the only dark red plates I have are 2 1x2 and 1 1x4 tiles… So I don’t think I can use them, but I’ll give it a try! Rogue Redcoat Posted August 3, 2023 Posted August 3, 2023 A very nice remake, with all the playability and clever use of pieces ()Ijust love that drawer with the smile pieces) having said this I think the entry needs to be remade a little more, here are my suggestions. First, although it does not look the best I think you should build online with stud.io (I just started using it myself, and think it is pretty straightforward) I only think this because you seem to be too held back by limited bricks (just like me). Other than this I would update the colors like tan for sand, and light blue for water, like other Lego sets (Pirates of barracuda bay and Eldorado Fortress). After the colors are updated, I think it would look perfect, anyway Happy building :) Quote

I do have limited pieces, but I think that not being able to use every LEGO piece in every color stimulates builders to think and build more creative. I chose for yellow for the sand and blue for the water because I wanted to keep the classic look (and I unfortunately don’t have any light blue plates) Quote

iragm Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 This is a really cool build! Ultimately, it looks like a 90's style >> 90's style re-imagining (a couple cheese slopes notwithstanding). I love all the details you've added, and the addition of the raft offers some more play value. It does seem to have missed the mark for the contest a bit, since it's neither modernized nor an original set in 90's style, but who cares? It looks great and I'm sure it was fun to build. The window shape and the texture on the roof are my favorite bits. Very nice work! Quote

Horation Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 12 hours ago, Captain Stef said: Hi! what do you think can help modernize this set? Well, this would likely require a few parts orders from bricklink-for which you might or might not have money for. The plates could be switched for updated colours (notably the water could be light blue and tan sand could be added). But it would also mean : ingots and masonry bricks and small pieces to make the walls, added red pieces to the wall, maybe adding 1x2 cheese slopes on the crenelations, etc... It concretely means using more modern parts (made after 2010) so as to improve the build's details. But a simple (and rather cheap) trick is to improve the lighting ; it looks too dark, which contributes to the overall darkness of the set. Quote
iragm Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 18 hours ago, Captain Stef said: Hi! what do you think can help modernize this set? 3 things have changed since the 90s: Colors -- use tan for the sand, azure for the water, dark tan and dark red accents on the building, light green for new plant growth and dark tan for dying leaves on the palm tree. Your limited selection of bricks is holding you back on this; build digitally in stud.io and/or spend money on bricks. Parts size -- smaller, more intricate parts, especially cheese slopes, masonry bricks, quarter round tiles, and studs not on top bricks. These allow for more interesting textures on roofs and walls, more detailed windows, and interior decorations that more accurately reflect their real-world counterparts. Build technique -- as a direct result of new parts, the level of detail expected in a modern set is much higher than it was in the 90s. Most 90s builds were essentially rectangles; modern sets have more angles, slopes, and a level of realism. Contrast the Barracuda Bay beach design to any pirate set from the 90s that had a beach. You can see the instructions here and the beach is build on page 35-45 or so. I'm not saying that modern techniques are better than what was found in the 90s -- they're just different. And your build is very nice as it is! Quote
Mazin Posted August 12, 2023 Posted August 12, 2023 Very nice! If i can be honest, this is one of those sets that realy needs a closer look to evaluate all the amazing work You've done here, as photography and presentation could scare some folks from voting for it. I mean, it's not that it's bad, my camera work would be probably worse, its just that there's so many pros in this field in this contets, and Your presentaiton is also quite dark ;) I do think that giving it more sunny vibes would make it more attractive. Cause it is attractive! I like those finishes on the roof, and that lantern, and that garage for a boat, window with bars and those battlements, especialy in the area where You've instaled Your gun. Rock formation and it's coexistence with those plants is very appealing, as is the landing area under that roof. And that room with small cabinet and a painting ( a map? ) on the wall is a nice touch. I even like that pirate fellow with an epoulette, tho looking at his waste i wasn't sure at first if the epoulette would go with it well. But i like it. Just as i like those bonus features, secred compartments, nice thinking. Tho, here i'd point out that maybe there should be no water under that barrel? That is if it's a secret stash, cause we woudln't want all that gold to sink in there, would we? But maybe i'm wrong here and it's not a storage but rather a secret entrence where pirates would emerge from the water or would jump into it to dive and swim under water into their safety? With tha storage in a rock, i don't have anything against the storage but i think the rock itself could use a bit more "decoration". Like a pirate skull installed on top of it? Just placed in there, or places on a spike/spear to scare the hell out any possible intruders. The thing is, that in Your first photo, and without knowing that there is a secret compartment in it, it looks unneeded in there. It's just a rock. End maybe it could be more of an entry sign. A warning. Now, the only think i don't like are those sails on the raft. Maybe it's photos again, but the way i see it, it's weird, it looks more like a piece from a destroyed airplane that was fixed in there. So i would use other pieces ( if possible ) in there. They could be made out of small pennants or bland flag pieces, anything that could work as a sail realy :) Or You could leave that raft without any sail. And finally, as much as i like those yellow elements on top of Your structure, battlements, i would realy love Lego to prepare better pieces for it. Cause for me it reminds me of classic yellow Lego caste, and i love Your choice of those pieces, but i'm afraid some viewers might see them as blocks of butter. At least they sort of remind me of it. Still, as i said, i realy love it the way it is. The whole compound is both classy, very playable, got nice features and details. The only thing that need real work is that sail on the raft. I'm a bit afraid tho that since the whole set is supposed to be a remake, some folks might find it not modern enough as those remake, as You've probably seen it in other entries, tend to be remastered to the extreme ;) Quote
durazno33 Posted August 21, 2023 Posted August 21, 2023 This is definitely and upgrade from the original for sure. I'm thinking that if you have the bricks a few little details here or there could help modernize it a bit more. For example, more moderns sets like to use tiles on top instead of having studs showing. What that would mean here is you could put some 1x2 tiles on top of your crenellations and possibly some 1x1 round grey and dark cobles on the lower level to smooth out some of the studs. This would be a fairly easy change to add that much more detail. Quote
MstrOfPppts Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 An interesting approach in a completely classic style with some great details. I like the hidden stash in the middle of the water! Though the cover part is a bit too new for the style. Also I think that the yellow spikes on top of fence should be white, can't remember such a design in the old sets. The yellow sand also doesn't mix too well the the yellow buildings that's probably why the imperial builds were either on a gray or green baseplate or the complete build was on a black pier. I do like the raft design with the log bricks. Works pretty well, but for a real LEGO set misses some studs connections. Quote

MightyThorngren Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 This is a really awesome MOC update. It fits in well with old or new sets. Great job, I would love to play around with it Quote
