Does it, though? The set and Minifig designs are clearly futuristic, and the planet does not resemble any in our solar system (even with creative liberties taken).

Please peruse the 1978-2023 Lego Town/City catalog and tell me why you think City isn't based on modern day Earth.

Town/City usually is based on modern-day designs, but these Space sets are clearly more futuristic than what we normally get (even compared to City space offerings from past years). Most are either current or obsolete (space shuttle) tech, and even the near-future 2022 sets were based on actual NASA concepts.

I am not going to deny that the designs are decidedly more NASApunk than classic neon-tron, but that is more a reflection of popular conceptions regarding the future of space exploration than it is an attempt to replicate existing real-world tech.

Yes, agreed on all counts. So clearly, these are nothing like traditional City sets. If they were just Space sets, they'd make more sense, and I wouldn't be confused as to what the lore is supposed to be.

The slow creep of city sets from NASA rockets to moon bases (60350) to mars spaceships (60354) to 2024's interstellar space ships & aliens has me really confused as to how far into the future the sets are supposed to be. And since they say Space too I don't even know if they're based on Earth or what.

I reply because this is a subject that you've beaten to death and I'm sure that if we took a poll, most forum users would not be obsessing over the detailed lore of these sets because they say "City" on the box. I'm curious what the deep motivations of your soul are that won't let you move past the "City" label on the box like everyone else does.

I don't want to jump into this argument, but I would suggest that Lego decided to do something unusual: have a cross-cutting theme this year rather than create a new theme, and they picked Space.  There are "Space" branded sets in Duplo, City, Friends, and Technic.  For me, this means Lego is not bringing back "space" as a theme as it has been known before, but we are getting a number of interesting space sets.  I suggest we just enjoy them for what they are.  I for one am not expecting new "Space" sets in 2025, but time will tell...

I agree that it is weird, though not that it is dumb; I am assuming that LEGO either felt that the sets would sell better under the City banner than as an independent theme, or that they only planned to make a few sets and did not think that creating an entirely new theme for a single HY wave would be worth the cost and effort.

I am very curious to see if we get more overarching ‘megathemes’ in the future! Castle and Pirates are the obvious next picks (as the other 2/3rds of the classic trio), but I can see themes like racing, mining, or underwater being ‘megathemes’ as well.

That means that having the word City on the box matters and affects how people feel about the set.

From a marketing standpoint, not a lore standpoint; LEGO themes are basically their own brands at this point, which is why new themes get a big marketing push when they first drop (establishing them as a brand).

Ok, Darth, please explain why City had Lunar subtheme and Friends had none in 2022? 

And explain why they put Mars subtheme in Friends this year? Explain why they put Spae banner on technic. Explain why they put Spacce banner no CMF?

You call it’s stupid and dumb that they put “City” logo on Space? You keep making fuss about it for months. It’s just simply a crosscutting theme throughout 2024. Your arguement gets tiring. Iit’s so  funny that you don’t like it when people police your option. Now you police others’ opinions. 

 

I know I did say I agree with Jc that it’s est to put a period to this pointless discussion but i wanted to trow my quesitons out at Dante’s feet.

My wife and I found the new cmfs at wal mart today, but we couldn't get the bricksearch or jay's brick blog scanners to work, we took our chances on two of them blind and managed to snag Orion and the UFO guy, which were the two she really wanted. The case was already almost half empty by the time we got there (like 2 pm).

I think it was maybe a wifi problem, we are definitely going to try again, we are really enjoying the new space theme, that's what got us back into lego this year, our son loves the new space sets (we got him both the smaller ships and the small mech and he plays with them every day, we are building a small moon base and having a lot of fun with it, and the space cmfs fit right in!)
