Yeah we will have to see when the full episode releases. The thing I'm most curious about are these potential crystal thieves. There isn't really an antagonist in these new space sets so maybe this is foreshadowing a wave of space pirate sets or something. I don't want to get my hopes up though. I kind of like that the new sets don't have an antagonist faction, that's very much in the spirit of classic space, so either way I'll be happy. Quote

It will probably just end up being No Face; she (as revealed in the finale) was the main villain of the first season, and the main colour that she uses in her crimes is magenta (similar to the colour of the energy bolts). No Face could just be testing the No Limits crew again, and since we also see a jailbreak in the trailer (though not of No Face), she could conceivably escape at some point in the season. I would absolutely love space pirates, though, and I hope that if they appear, we actually get them in physical form (unlike the teal and lime jetpack pieces that Wanda and Bytz wear!). Quote

Yeah, designers intended to plan Space sets in distant future rather in in our present time. I’m not too crazy about that lore from comic and tv show. So yes, it’s strange. I like desginers’ interpretations better. Quote

For me honestly I've been super satisfied with the City and Friends offerings (with the former offering a new take on space that I personally feel stands toe-to-toe with full-fledged space themes, and the latter being downright adorable with some great designs). Haven't gotten any of the Technic space sets since I haven't been much into Technic since the end of Technic-based constraction themes like Bionicle (since Bionicle MOCing drove a lot of my interest in cool functional or aesthetic Technic parts), but it was refreshing to see some more speculative Technic sets after so many years of sets based on modern-day, real-world subjects. Oh, and of course the minifigure series was amazing, with a great combination of new takes on classic factions along with some of the more out of the ordinary choices I love from the CMFs! That's not to say I would've said no to another retro space throwback set like the Galaxy Explorer or some more sets in the aforementioned themes (indeed, I'm seriously hoping that these aren't the last we see of Space in Friends and City for too long, and that the next space sets in those themes build on the incredibly strong foundation this year's sets established). But after several years where throwbacks were some of the ONLY kinds of space sets we'd been getting, it's been refreshing to see takes on Space that go beyond AFOL nostalgia and actually feel like they chart a path forward for space sets! I find that very odd because Castle and Pirates have gotten several such sets and the Galaxy Explorer was released a couple of years ago. Another Space set like the Galaxy Explorer would've been perfect for the "year of space". I really liked the space CMFs, particularly the Blacktron 2, M-Tron and Ice Planet ones. Quote

Yeah I feel the same way about the general Technic theme. It never appeals me at all even since Bionicle era in 2000s. I had a very few Star Wars sets that were made out of Technic parts in early 2000s like R2-D2 and droid. This Planet Earth and Orbit Moon set….is marvelous! I love how functional it goes with boht Earth. And Moon orbitin the Sun. I’m fully satisfied with it. I absoutely enjoy Space City sets but i haven’t built a rover set yet. I also have Creator Astronaut set, yet to be built. I totally agree with you on Space CMF Series! Yeah i won’t complain if they bring back sets from the past like Galazy Explorer. I wo’t sa no if they do something new like a new space theme outside of City and Friends themes themselves. 3 minutes ago, SpacePolice89 said: I'm very disappointed with the "year of space" because we didn't get any sets related to the Space theme. I feel Galaxy Explorer served better for everyone before its retirement before “year of space” but I think Pirates only have one El Doradlo and Castle has a few sets like LKC and MTS. Not that much, tho. But I get that there should be some set from the past space themes like Galaxy Explorer. The Pharrell spaceship set is….not so space . Quote
icm Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I used to be disappointed that there aren't any explicit throwback minifig playscale sets in the 2024 Year of Space, but I got over that. The sheer breadth and variety of Space and Space-adjacent sets in 2024 is far more than I can afford to buy, and the Artemis SLS rocket and Apollo Lunar Rover are dream-come-true sets for me. I'm going to try to get the other Space sets as they go on sale later this year, but I've been eating so good with Space this year that I don't mind the lack of, say, Classic Space, Blacktron, Ice Planet, or Space Police as throwback sets. If we are counting only buyable Sets, then only Castle got one Set more then Space and Pirates, which both got one only - and if we are taking GWPs in aswell, then Space got more Sets too. Space is the only Series, that got a own CMF and yes, this year was lacking a retro Set (a buyable one, the GWP was pretty good IMO), though they might have decided against it because there are plenty of new Space Sets out there this year and a retro space set might be selling worse if other sets are avaiable. That beeing said, I would think that we have good chances to see a new retro Space Set next year. Quote

Buyable sets since 2020 Castle: Lion Knights Castle (Lion Knights), Creator Castle (Black Falcons), Medieval Blacksmith (Black Falcons) and Medieval Town Square (Lion Knights) 4 Pirates: Barracuda Bay (Pirates), Creator Pirate Ship (Pirates) and Eldorado Fortress (Imperial Soldiers) 3 Space: Galaxy Explorer (Classic Space) 1 Space needs more sets, even a Creator set would be great since the ones for Pirates and Castle have been really good. I really hope that we get another Space set next year. Edited August 20, 2024 by SpacePolice89 Quote

And if we go away from that, then I would have to count all the City Space Sets aswell. I mean, aside from the Creator Castle using two Black Falcon Knights, there is nothing really that makes it any more retro castle, than the City Sets are to retro space. Same for Pirates. It just doesn´t make sense to say Castle and Pirates get so many Sets and counting all of them, while you are not ready to do the same with Space. I am actually pretty sure that space and Pirates fans would be more than happy if they would get the same treatment that Space got this year ;). Quote

As a Space fan, I feel lucky to get anything at all, and while 2024 City Space wasn't exactly what I was hoping for, it was maybe 70% there. I think Castle/Pirates should also get more sets...with the stipulation that they too must be City sets. 😂 Quote

I think the issue is that Castle and Pirates are set in (and therefore should reflect) specific historical time periods. Whereas Space has always represented an imaginary future. Therefore, there is way more latitude in what fits into the Space theme. This is easily seen as Classic Space moved into Futuron, Space Police, Magnetron, etc., etc. I know there were variations/new factions in the Castle and Pirates themes, but I think the variety/variations were much less than Space over the years. Thus, I think the 3 in 1 Creator castle does fit in with with Classic castle sets and the variety that was seen in that theme over the years. Same with the Creator 3 in 1 pirate ship. My youngest daughter plays with the pirate ship right along side of the three Pirates sets from 1989 I have. To her, there's no difference. It's just Red Beard vs. Brown Beard! Compare that to mixing Classic space sets with the current City Space offerings, and the differences are very evident. Quote

Sure both of them resemble a past time, but aren´t necessarily located there - especially castle and less than anything of that fantasy era - something like that would actually be my wish if they would make new Castle Sets, with so many possibilies. Well of course also very unlikely, because they would need more moulds for it than for just normal medieval based castle. 39 minutes ago, Space78 said: I know there were variations/new factions in the Castle and Pirates themes, but I think the variety/variations were much less than Space over the years. Give your daughter City Space Sets and some old Sets, and she will just be able to play with both of them together as she does with Pirates. Kids will be the last to care about the label. Sure Space, as it isn´t really based on anything existing, is more free in it´s overall design, especially compared to pirates. But as you said Space had many different designs and that actually is even more a reason why City space works well with other space series. Because every faction doesn´t look the same anyways. I mean the classic space faction doesn´t even have a consistent design at all. Neither in shape, nor colour. Quote

I think this is my ignorance of all the previous Castle and Pirates sets, but for me, I see the current sets in each line fitting in perfectly with the classic sets from the 1980s and early 90s. That is probably why the City Space sets are placed under the City theme instead of Space. But what is really different from City Space to other space sets? The only thing I could name is that it is less colourfull - and actually a bigger spaceship would also have been great to have. Space had so many different designs, with different colours and different shapes, that I couldn´t put my finger on something and say this is space - no this is not. I could do so for single factions, but when it comes to classic space even that is hard to do, since there isn´t really any system there apart from the minfigs. If I compare some of the classic space ships with city ones we got now, city space isn´t that far away from that. Sure they look much more modern, but last years Spaceships got a similar V-Shape as many of the older Spaceships had and there are also quite some that weren´t colourful at all back then. So yeah, for me the biggest difference between both is that city space got no bigger spacship. And probably had the lowest spaceship-to sets ratio of any Space-theme ;). As for the Creator Pirates and Castle Sets, for me they look more different from other castle Sets than the City Space Sets from Space. I mean Creator has it´s own, more blocky building style. although it got already much less blocky lately. However it still looks quite different from the normal building style and the biggest difference IMO is that they used built sails which kinda changes the entire look of the set. The Medieval Blacksmith on the other side is way to big to be placed near any of the other castle sets, even the Lion Knights Castle, which is already bigger than the others ones. Well in the end it was meant to be a stand alone set - and of course it always can be modified to work better with the castles. Quote

The City Space sets have a different look and aesthetics compared to the Space sets. The same way as Star Wars sets have their own look that is different from Space and City Space. Some of the vehicles have a strong resemblance to modern day space stuff although with a futuristic twist and the overall feel I get from City Space is not the same I get from the Space theme. It just doesn't feel as a Space faction. With all this being said there's absolutely nothing wrong with City Space and the sets are great in their own way, they just aren't meant as a replacement for the Space theme and that is why I believe they placed them under City. The Creator Castle is quite similar in style to mid to late 80s castles. With no current ongoing Castle, Space and Pirates themes they have to place those sets under Creator, Ideas and Icons and that also affects the look of the sets like the brick built sails and the size of the Medieval Blacksmith but all those sets are clearly recognizable as part of their respective themes and factions.
