Jim Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 TECHNIC SHRINKING CONTEST - RESULTS TOPIC 1. 42082 Rough Terrain crane by Akassin - 133 Points 2. 42043 Arocs by 2GodBDGlory - 126 Points 3. 42069 Extreme Adventure by Zerobricks - 122 Points VOTING PROCESS The jury consisted of six Eurobricks "Technic members". We each made a list of all entries, ranking them from 1st to 23rd. Scoring was very basic. 1st place got 23 points and last place got 1 point. We tallied the votes to come to the final result. As promised we will provide a short explanation for the top-3 entries. All things considered this contest was one of the best in EB's history. It was very hard to judge. Seeing your entry low(er) on the list, definitely doesn't mean that it wasn't good. It simply means others were considered slightly better. We absolutely loved every entry on the list, but we did have to put them in order which ultimately lead to these results. 42082 Rough Terrain Crane by Akassin It's a very clean recreation and it was done so well that it looks like this is the scale that Lego should have released 42084 originally. Maybe not as risky of a choice, or as difficult to pull off as the Arocs, as some did say that the original perhaps should have been smaller to start with, however Akassin's very nicely and cleanly finished build and very well thought out and efficient gear mechanisms makes us easily able to see this released as an official set. He has also managed to keep all of the functions without making them manual representations, keeping all of them being moved by some geared mechanism. Overall we do think this is the best execution of all the models. Arocs by 2GodBDGlory The Arocs, unlike some other sets on this list, was pretty much universally liked, no-one said it was too big and it was packed full with functions, no wasted space at all. But somehow 2GodBDGlory has managed to shrink it down to roughly 1/8 of it's original volume whilst retaining all but one function (that being the inline engine). He has 4 sprung axles, two of them steered, geared outwards motion of the outriggers with a clever and creative use of connection pins to make the vertical movement of the outriggers, and that's just in the first few studs of height. On top of that he has retained all 4 pneumatic functions and all controlled from a centralized location in the cab. This leads to the models only weakness which is that the valves have made the cab one stud too tall, making it look slightly off compared to the original. But apart from that he has kept the look and feel of the original in what looks to be a fairly sturdy and clean overall design. In short, the Arocs was not a safe option to shrink, it was a risky choice due to it already being packed full of functions in its original scale, but 2GodBDGlory has pulled it off brilliantly in a way that made it look deceptively easy (although we know it wasn't), keeping the majority of it's functions in a much much smaller but still clean and sleek package that's true to the original. 42069 Extreme Adventure by Zerobricks. Much like Akassin did with 42082 (as well as Grohl with his Ford GT), Zerobricks showed that some things might actually be better in smaller packages. Zerobricks' recreation looks just as good, retains almost all of the functions, and is just as cleanly well finished as the original. However, it's all done with fewer pieces. We could argue that, for the most part, all he really had to do was swap out big pieces for smaller pieces, but we know it's way more complicated than that. The part count reduction also shows that much more thought went into its design than that. If the panels were available in purple, it might have ended even higher. Seasider Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Congratulations to the winners and all those that took part. Some truly great models here, I’d love to build quite a few of them. Once again I didn’t have time for my model, fingers crossed I can free up some time for the next amazing Technic competition. Quote
Maaboo the Witch Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 All of the entries are incredible - picking a favourite has never been more difficult! Quote
Thirdwigg Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Great job everyone. There were some great builds and I’m happy with the final results. @Akassin is on a roll, and the crane was great! Well done @2GodBDGlory by taking on and succeeding with 42043. Great job @Zerobricks and I’m glad to see you are on the podium. Quote

I beg to differ on that, the internal structure of chassis / steering isn't something that would be acceptable build quality for Lego as a set and also Akkasin did state that he wants to make a separate improved build for instruction, while the one submitted for contest was with implementing everything as close to original as possible, which he did. I guess I have a different standards for build quality, and so does Lego btw... Anyway congrats to the winners, and hopefully more of the entries will be preserved in form of instructions. Quote

Even in the results topic you manage to start a discussion and basically question, and thus disrespect, our decision. It's unbelievable. Quote
Ngoc Nguyen Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 (edited) Now that the contest's over I just wanna say that the original set I plan to enter is neither the Airbus nor the CLAAS, but this. I've been tinkering with it for a couple of months before the contest started. But I expected that I wouldn't have enough time to find a decent solution for the distinctive grill and a bunch of other areas in a mere two months, so I didn't pick it. But let's not start that discussion here. Quote
2GodBDGlory Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Wow, I'm honored to have placed in this competitive field! Congratulations on a well-deserved win @Akassin! I loved the way you didn't compromise with the gearboxes! That's also a solid recreation of an interesting and oft-neglected set, @Zerobricks! Quote
