ARC2149Nova Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Y'know, all this talk about stormtrooper battle packs reminded me about how, in the past, we'd get several of the key troopers scattered across a wave of sets: TCW & 2013 Clone Trooper, All Stormtrooper variants, etc. With the exception of the Battle Droids, and arguably the Stormtrooper, we haven't seen that in a while. It would be hard to drop a bunch of, say, Shore Troopers across a wave if there isn't a ton of Andor/Rogue One sets, but Lego could achieve this if they spread the love across Mando S2, Andor, and Rogue One sets, for example. I know we're probably never seeing Solo sets again, but I'd argue the Imperial Army could benefit from this type of distribution too. Battle Packs are nice, but this way still allows you to acquire multiples, and you get more sets out of it overall. Even if you don't buy every set said figure comes in, the increased supply would help regulate prices on the secondary market. Quote
Coryo Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 The fact that the TIE Interceptor/Fang Fighter set is retiring at the end of this year has me leaning towards the TIE Avenger as the other set, since their designs are probably too similar for Lego to want them on shelves at the same time. I don't think it would be paired with another "good guy" ship though, since Cassian will probably be piloting/stealing it based on the trailer 7 hours ago, JohnTPT17 said: Cough cough colored eyeballs getting the black pupil removed cough cough Yeah, this is one of my least favourite design choices in recent memory, it makes a lot of characters look straight up blind. "It makes them more consistent because no minifigures have pupils." Incorrect. Almost all minifigures have pupils. That's what the black part is. They don't have irises. These newer ones ("new" technically meaning since 2013 I guess, though I hated it then and still hate it now and they've certainly become more common in the past few years. A similar style was also used in some Indiana Jones sets and on Juno Eclipse in 2008 but again I thought those were weird choices even back then.) have irises but no pupils, making them look pretty freaky and also actually making them LESS consistent with the majority of minifigures. Also, the reason people like me complain about Ahsoka, Ezra, Hera, etc. is NOT that we think they should have the tiny "Sith-style" pupils they used to do for Maul and Palpatine. It's that they shouldn't have coloured eyes at all. Give them the normal black ones. The way they choose which figures have coloured eyes at all seems to have very little consistency itself. You could loosely say it's female "aliens" but even then it's not applied fully consistently (I'm very glad they didn't ruin the 2017 Aayla with them, and annoyed that they did ruin the new Ezra) and even if it was consistent it'd still be a very weird choice since in basically every portrayal we've seen female aliens have exactly the same sort of eyes as every non-alien or non-female character. There's no reason for them to be coloured at all, even if the execution was done well (which it isn't). Edited November 27, 2024 by CallumPears Quote
ForgedInLego Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Acclamator pics are out. Looks fine, wish the red stripes could have been brick built rather than stickers but whatever. Build doesn't look too revolutionary, the underside looks a little off. At least the build has a lot of new slope / wedge pieces Quote
Rwbricks Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 (edited) Pictures are out of the buildable Grogu with pram and the midi-scale Acclamator. The latter looks about accurate from what I can see, though still expensive for what you get. It’s always nice to get something new, though. Grogu, while, partially a remake, looks better than I had expected. The new scale works well, allowing him to sit inside the pram, which looks good. I think he’s still too large to scale accurately next to Chewie, R2, and 3PO, which is too bad, but any smaller might not have looked as good. I like the addition of the accessories, the Sorgan Frog especially. In other news, Maxbaudte’s AMA continues, and he’s said that the Maul in the Mech will be based on Clone Wars Season 7, and the clone pilots in the ARC-170 will be Phase II. He also said that as far as he knows, we’ll get another/more named clone(s) next year, as well as plenty of long-awaited minifigures. Edited November 27, 2024 by Rwbricks Ninja’d Quote
Swordy Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Love the buildable Grogu with Pram. I feel a touch bit nostalgic for the 2020 model, but this new build looks much cleaner and much cuter. Love the parts usage on the face. Head and arms are slightly oversized, but that only adds to the cuteness appeal. Accessories are a nice touch. Don’t care for buildable figures, but I’m considering this one for how special the Mandalorian show is to me. Acclamator looks fine, but feels small for $50. Open Fleet insignia on a 2x2 is a great piece to have in circulation. Quote

It's been more than 5 years since the new helmet was introduced, meaning the old mold is likely literally gone. It would cost a new mold to bring it back, at which point it'd make more sense to just create a third design. It's really annoying to see this pop up every single time a stormtrooper appears somewhere. The 2014 style helmets are gone and not returning and at this point you need to accept it. I don't care if LEGO agrees with me, there's lots of decisions they make regarding set and figure designs which I think could be better. God forbid I'm not a shill and actually critique the company, lol. I'm fine with them making a new design, I don't see why that's such a big deal. Quote

THELEGOBATMAN Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Grogu with his hover pram looks awesome. I really love the accessories, and the display stand with the figure is a nice addition. The Acclamator, on the other hand, is awful. The ship looks weirdly disproportionate to what it's trying to portray, but also... 50€ for this? It looks like a 30€ set at best, it's ridiculously small. I have no idea what have all these pieces gone into. Quote

They interviewed the team behind the UCS Khetanna and I gotta say, I am really starting to dislike the Star Wars design team. They seem very smug and content with their obviously controversial design choices. I understand Disney has certain sway, but LSW has been behind the ball compared to other Star Wars brands. (I.E. Hasbro) This is an actually interesting question, whether there is either some lack of love or lack of competence in the SW design team, or if every sign of smug or ignorance is caused simply by higher ups demanding good marketing profile etc. On one hand, I would believe that in every interview etc. the designers have no choice but to praise what they have done. That is the standard in the music industry and in Hollywood etc., so probably also regarding Lego. Though, one could still point out clear design choices and arguments behind them, not merely praise that everything about everything is great, but to really argue for one's choices, like "Khetanna looks dark brown in the movies, but we made it reddish brown because this and that". This would still be good marketing, but still showing some humble and most importantly, honest analysis that there are choices to make in the design process. If everything about everything is great, that generally does not sound very genuine... I would also guess that the SW team has had novel recruits over the years, and probably they are behind the modern master pieces (from the technical perspective of Lego building) like the Ferrix shuttle. But then, the ones who originally began the job at the end of the 1990s might still hold a place, unless someone has retired, or someone has kicked them out at some point, which I might doubt. Due to their long experience they might even have a lot of authority even if their skill and knowledge might seriously lack behind the modern standards and current masters. The examples possibly supporting this inference are at least the never-changing snowspeeder, which has had the same design for more than two decades, even if examples and novel pieces for improvement have been common and widespread for long. Like, if some contemporary master builder would have that task to design a new snowspeeder at Lego and under their limitations, hands up, how many of you would believe they would still go with the exactly same core design? Another supporting evidence might be the variable design quality between sets, and sometimes rookie flaws in them, like the UCS star destroyer having serious gaps. These make me at least feel that there might be designers of separate levels at work. Though, these are only some aspects I have personally picked up in the designs and their presentation over the years. Cannot really say for sure, if there is any truth to these notions. I struggle to equate "named clones" with clone commanders, as we've always gotten them (Rex/Cody/Fox/Wolffe/Gree in Phase I, Rex/Cody/Fox/Neyo/Gree/Vaughn for Phase II). I would guess more along the lines of Fives, and that's sufficiently vague enough to mean any number of clones. Anything from new Bad Batch to troops from TCW. Maybe even a pilot (like Hawk, for instance). On the other hand, this could just be a red herring and could very well be referring to any one of a dozen missing commanders (Bly/Bacara/Wolffe) Which brings me to my second point. The 2 new Jedi feels either like new characters or rarely produced characters. I'd take no hints from any associated images as those rarely reflect the actual subject matter. If Plo Koon is a movie figure (ROTS), then it may make more sense for the two other Jedi to be prequel characters also. I doubt major protagonists count, so no Yoda/Mace/Obi-Wan/Luke etc, as we'd just namedrop those and forego the hype. Realistically, this could mean a new Kit Fisto, maybe some Acolyte characters, or the other members of Windu's arrest party. The leaked Acclamator is very nice, I want one. Time will tell if I get just the one. 1 hour ago, CloneCommando99 said: Could the clone pilot set be a republic attack shuttle? Highly doubt it. "Why do you think we made the wrong figure for this set? Why do you think we cut so many corners? Don't our decisions (made purely for profit margin) make so much more sense? Your feeble collector minds can't comprehend the layers behind our genius set design." I am obviously exaggerating, but I swear the Khetanna interview was the most irritating thing I've read from the design team. It beats the Clone Pilot debacle by a mile for me. I honestly don't even think brickset was satisfied with their answers - they were basically told to answer their own questions! Even with past controversies, the design team always came off as more "this is simply what we're working with/our thought process went like this" vs "it is what it is. Deal with it." Quote
Flawless Cowboy Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 It’s clear to me that LSW needs new blood, or to borrow designers from other themes that routinely put out better-looking and more fun models. Quote

I didn’t realise Brickset interviewed the LSW design team on the Sail Barge! Link for those who were unaware like me - there’s a few parts to it but this is the minifigure-focused one. But wow, they called out the Desert Skiff Boba being completely inaccurate and the answer was ‘there are a lot of considerations’. I totally understand budget constraints and I remember how illuminating Mark Stafford’s AMA on Reddit about the Daily Bugle was, especially in how he explained how carefully new moulds and prints are always considered, but with Star Wars these sets are beyond overpriced to begin with! Generally I do think Lego Star Wars has put out some fantastic sets this decade (especially after 2021), but what annoys me is the lack of proper upgrades to evergreen ships. Sure if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but you look at vehicles like Ahsoka’s Eta-2 where it’s largely quite similar in build and scale to previous iterations, but this time with a rather pointless new cockpit piece and of course a far heftier price tag. I wish there would be more of an effort to improve these things from the ground up, and it makes me think that whenever we do get a new Snowspeeder, it’s mostly going to be the same sort of build as what we last got in 2019. That aside, Max’s teases about LSW fans eating good next summer and having plenty of highly requested minifigures in the pipeline is quite exciting to hear. Personally I’d love to see Anakin and Obi-Wan in their Clone Wars armour along with something from Jedi: Survivor but all of that seems extremely unlikely. Regardless I’m excited to hear about what’s in store, especially as we’ve gotten a lot of ‘iconic’ OT sets out of the way this year. Edited November 27, 2024 by Kaijumeister Quote
Meaf Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 If there is a new clone commander coming, I feel like Wolffe is the most obvious candidate right? There are some others who are requested, but I think Plo is almost certainly going to show up in another set and Wolffe is bound to show up with him. Not to mention that Lego seems to enjoy keeping at least one character in any given large-ish set exclusive, and again, Wolffe just makes the most sense with Plo. I guess we've just got to wait a little while and see though. Quote

JohnTPT17 Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 If we're taking bets about highly requested characters that haven't shown up yet, I'll take Duchess Satine, please! Though if the image included Jedi, I think that would be very unlikely... Probably Kit Fisto, then. As far as "named clones" goes, I think it could maybe be Jesse? He would be new, and any Clone Wars set that could have him could pair indirectly with the Maul mech. Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Thanks for the news! It's weird that we'll get an ARC in System scale, but the Plo Koon's Starfighter then will be a Microfighter. These days LSW most of the time is no longer fun for me (and I imagine for other AFOLs and for kids, too): You only get standalone (display) models, but the counterparts to play well with are missing. And since years there are no bigger decent locations to create with all together a nice and appealing layout. Very disappointing. Quote
