Coryo Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 The issue with potential Sequel merch is that most of the ships/vehicles are just slight variations on stuff from the Original Trilogy, so if Lego were to want an X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or capital ship on shelves, they'd go for the Rebellion/Empire designs rather than the Resistance/First Order ones. Kylo's Shuttle makes sense since it's aesthetically different enough from anything else they would potentially make, plus they don't want to fully commit by making it minifig-scale. The AT-AT Driver getting a helmet set before Kylo is kind of funny to me though, like they're scraping the bottom of the OT barrel before even touching the sequels 9 hours ago, CloneCommando99 said: 75400: Plo Koon’s Jedi Starfighter 75401: Ahsoka’s Jedi Interceptor 75403: Buildable Grogu in Pram 75416: Buildable Chopper Is the LSW team now under the control of Dave Filoni? 24 minutes ago, Lego Nostalgia said: Dioramas are done for since they usually release in May and all the 18+ stuff for May is Helmets and Midi-Scale Ships, It's Lego's fault for picking the most boring scenes from movies and having them at a high price, what did they expect, it's a stupid reason, cancel a whole sub-line because it doesn't sell well due to their stupidity, release a Palpatine's Arrest or Mustafar and I guarantee that would have sold well The high price is kind of the point of the diorama sets, adding like 200 black pieces to the bottom what would be an otherwise normal set and marketing it to the 'Adults Welcome' crowd. I hope we get something like Palpatine's Arrest, but it's totally fine for a toy to be a toy Quote

ToaDraco Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 (edited) If the Kylo Ren's shuttle rumor is true, I would find it puzzling. It does not seem like the kind of ship that would be in high demand, plus it's a ship LEGO has already made several times as playscale sets and polybags. The Falcon gets away with it because it is the most iconic Star Wars ship in the entire franchise. Personally, I think the ship series should be reserved for capital ships and vehicles too large to do at a reasonable mini-fig scale. If they wanted to do a sequel era vehicle, the Mega-Class Star Dreadnought would have been perfect and could even include the abillity to seperate a third of it to recreate it being shattered by the hyperspace attack, similar to how the Invisible Hand can be split in two. Kylo’s shuttle is perhaps the most “iconic” new sequel vehicle and gets a healthy amount of screen time. Plus, it’s likely a TFA set, the most well-received sequel film. I don’t think a ship associated with a much-maligned scene at the end of TLJ would be a better fit. The very utterance of the Holdo Maneuver makes half the fanbase cringe. Quote

True, but I think in the case of the Mando AT-ST and the X-Wing/TIE combo from this year, they were both show tie-ins (similar to the Rogue One AT-ST). The Hoth AT-ST was a bit of an outlier, but it was essentially the same model as the regular Endor one, just different figures/side builds. My theory on the Mando AT-ST specifically is that, if you remember back to the time it came out, LEGO was reeeeally adverse to putting out sets from SW shows. They went all-in on Rebels sets (presumably because the big TCW waves from the late 2000s/early 2010s did well), which seemed to not sell super well, I think partially because Rebels took a bit longer to gain in popularity, and also that some of the set choices weren't really all that relevant (whereas TCW could basically just use any prequel vehicle or starfighter and throw a random assortment of clones + a Jedi in). We only got a handful of Clone Wars related sets afterwards, and it was all inexpensive stuff, usually with named characters (probably so that it could at least sell on minifigure attraction), and no other TV stuff at all. I think that with the AT-ST, they were unsure of the show's potential success and/or how well merch for it would sell, so they opted for a vehicle that was recognizable from the OT, but had some new minifigures, so at the very least, people might be more interested in it than something like the Wookiee Gunship. I think that given the choice between the OT version of a ship and the PT/ST version, they're probably going to lean OT 9/10 times unless it's a tie-in with a movie/show currently being produced - which is likely why we haven't had something like the Naboo Flash Speeder or ARC-170 in quite a while, because it's essentially filling the same price point and idea as the Landspeeder or X-Wing, the latter options being more well-known and iconic. I know we're getting an ARC-170 remake next year, but that's, what, the third one in twenty years, compared to like six X-Wings in that span, one of which was on shelves for quite literally 5 years. Semi-irrelevant tangent below And I don't say this to be like "why are we getting so many remakes!" because I understand why they constantly have to put out an X-Wing or Falcon - as a kid, there was a period of a couple of years where there wasn't a Falcon on shelves (besides the original UCS one that was way out of my budget), which was disappointing to me. I had no way to get a lot of the main characters from the movies in minifig form. While most of us on here have been around LSW for enough time to where we've seen a handful of Falcon or X-Wings come and go, to a kid just getting into the theme, if your favorite character/ship isn't on shelves, it can be kind of disappointing. No. A something from Endor, with an image of a 2013 catalog, was teased for being released next year, but never told when. Assuming it is an Ewok Village, if it were to follow the pattern of previous MBS sets, it’ll likely release in Fall. Aside from the leak of the Sail Barge, which was a class of its own, it feels a bit unprecedented to hear wind of a Fall D2C so soon, but not entirely implausible. The Ewok Village is one of the oldest D2C location sets, beat only by the original Cloud City and Death Star. Both of those sets have had remakes, the former of which, Cloud City’s remake, released in 2018, only 7 years ago. Compare that to the Ewok Village, which released in 2013, 12 years ago, and you may see perhaps why LEGO is keen on remaking it next year. Edited October 1, 2024 by Swordy Quote

I'm not sure this is necessarily a fair representation of the situation. For one, prior to 2008 when the Clone Wars cartoon started, there wasn't really any noticeable prevalence of prequel-era content in terms of supplemental media. Sure there were tie-in novels when the films came out, but the (overwhelming) majority of the books of the time were either post-OT or far pre-PT - and if you're counting the High Republic era as the prequel era then of course a ten-thousand-year span of time is going to have more content than a couple of years. Games, too, tended to lean towards being in other eras (there were exceptions ofc, such as the Battlefront campaign). Even after 2008, most of the emphasis on the prequel era was because that was the active era. (Some fan spaces were definitely prequel-heavy in this period - the brickfilming community, for example - but this again is likely a product of the fact that most of the active voices were young/teens at the time) Meanwhile, in the post-prequel era (let's say, since TROS came out in 2019) there's been a broad mix, but not only is most of the material based in some way on the characters created by Dave Filoni (who I'd argue is the worst thing to happen to Star Wars but that's neither here nor there), a lot of the series are very clearly working towards setting up elements of the plot of the sequels. Which given that Disney also won't permit anybody to make stories set after the films is a decent showing. And given that the sequels take place in a limited span of time, during which there are basically zero gaps in any of the new cast's activities, it would be hard to tell a story with Rey or Connix or Jessika Pava. I'd also note that there is post-sequel content in the works. And I would definitely disagree with the idea that people softened on the prequels before 2015. I remember that period well (it was the peak of my interest in Star Wars, to the point that I was writing 90-page screenplays in which Mara Jade was brought back to life) and the prequels as films were always seen as terrible. That is separate from the world around them, which has been appreciated at least for as long as I can remember. Quote

If the Yavin IV set has done really well and they continue with the $150ish location-based playsets, I could see Cloud City being a logical set to get there at some point, but there's 2-3 other location-based sets that I think would take precedence in terms of demand and "needing" to be made (Jedi Temple and Geonosis Arena, namely). What you need to understand is that your opinion on this is largely shaped by your own circle, especially considering that only about 15% of the global population had internet access when the last prequel movie came out in 2005. A lot of us loved the prequels with all our hearts, but we were not out there debating and arguing online about it. We simply enjoyed the movies, collected the merch, and enjoyed the universe. The real arguments only flared up when the sequels came out and people started comparing the trilogies, this is also when people that grew up with prequels became vocal. Almost all of the early criticism andd division came from older, very vocal OT fans who were crying about midichlorians, Jar Jar, and CGI. They were the ones re-editing the movies and characters out of it, saying there are only 3 Star Wars films and whining how Lucas ruined their childhood. I really hope the Endor Village rumors are true, as the older version of the set is my white whale. I have a soft spot for Endor. If the battle pack is something like Endor Rebels, I would be pretty happy with that as well. Quote

These are anecdotes, after all. As to your other points, five years of nothing but build-up with vague references to characters and events does not compare, imo, to Clone Wars-mania post RoTS (which only took three years to start!) And again I’ll point out that sequel toys across the spectrum have been shelf warmers, a fate prequel-era toys never suffered even after the films were no longer showing in theaters. As to Disney’s treatment of the post-sequel canon? All it means is that higher-ups care. Which means…not that much, considering Disney just put out another flop of a series that will end on a cliff hanger on season 1. Clearly, their internal metrics of what the audience “wants” are poorly calibrated. Edited October 1, 2024 by Flawless Cowboy Quote
Alexandrina Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 42 minutes ago, Flawless Cowboy said: As to Disney’s treatment of the post-sequel canon? All it means is that higher-ups care I can agree with this, for sure, but I would point out that you did bring up post-sequel media yourself. It's not especially relevant to the staying power of the sequels, but that cuts both ways. Honestly, my main point is that the prequels were roundly hated for a long time, well up to the release of the sequels (and at least in my experience, when TFA came out people said it was at least better than the prequels - it wasn't until the divisive TLJ and the lower-than-average TRoS that opinion really solidified to be anti-sequel). 2015 feels right too for another reason: it's around this time that the first kids from the Clone Wars' target demographic would have reached adulthood. I've found that Clone Wars fans are quite likely to overlook the flaws of the films and/or romanticise the entire era because of their nostalgia for the cartoon. I think it's safe to say that two things are true: the sequels have not been a merchandising success to the extent Disney would have wanted, and the prequels were generally considered poor right through into the sequel era. (I have a minor theory as well that a lot of hardcore Star Wars fans checked out around 2014/15 for different reasons unrelated to the quality of any of the films - specifically the decanonisation of the Legends novels. As most of the Legends novels were post-RotJ, and the Clone Wars era stuff tended not to be so thoroughly disregarded, this demographic is going to have had more overlap with prequel-haters than prequel-lovers. I know that my own interest declined when I realised that all of my favourite characters were going to be abandoned, and I'm still bitter that we never got any sort of resolution to Vestara's arc) Nowadays I'm not sure it would still hold true as too many years have passed, but I imagine that had Lego released a set or two based off the books in around 2012-2013, it would have been competitive with or even outsold the prequel sets on the shelf at the time. Especially if it included Thrawn! Quote
