Here’s a question, if the Mandalorian Movie flops and the sets made for it sell that poorly, what would happen to the theme? Will lego become more hesitant to make sets based off new content, or business as usual?

I have a horrible feeling that not only is it going to be a flop, it's going to have lasting effects on the production of new Star Wars content in general. Certainly I wouldn't be surprised if we're lucky to get one set for new shows moving forward, and almost nothing revisiting old material beyond the nine main films.

What I think will happen is that, regardless of whether the Mandalorian film pulls an audience, the hype will go to the New Jedi Order movie/Episode X - by the time Mando is ready for release, we'll be in a much more advanced stage in EpX production, with cast members announced, and EpX is imo likely to tackle some of the things OG fans wanted from the sequels, while pushing the timeline forward in a way Mando doesn't. Wouldn't surprise me if whatever Mando sets we get for the film are the last ones we get until well into the 2030s

Let’s be honest though the Mando film and the Thrawn film are both going to be a lot of OT vehicles with new characters in the sets. If SW and Disney show Lego enough concept for sets I can see us not getting many imperial or rebel sets until the films come out. I don’t mind that I like the idea of having a potential ATAT set that’s not based on Hoth for example.

I think we should all be aware though at just how many potential Star Wars films have been cancelled in the past few years so I am at a stage now where I’m sceptical about a film/tvs existence until I see a trailer

And yet it still manages to be based off a snow planet.

I’ve seen even less people be hyped for the Rey movie.

I mean, that’s what’s happening right now. After Acolyte it appears that Disney is cutting back on SW content on D+.

After the reception TROS received Disney has had trouble getting SW movies off the ground. Even more so when the directors they hired suddenly churn out films that were overall met with some hatred cough - Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson, Taika Waititi and GoT writers - cough.

I think the difference is that the Rey movie is at the moment nothing more than "Daisy Ridley has been cast" and some journos trying to imply that not shooting until 2025 means it's destined to fail, whereas Mando is further along (has guest-stars announced) and meant to be the culmination of multiple shows which are almost all out, and yet its hype has actually dropped since it was first announced (Mando S3 being poorly received in many quarters, Ahsoka being pretty well inaccessible to people not already invested in the characters from the cartoons). The Rey movie also benefits from having low baseline expectations, while also likely being the sort of thing which will appeal to fans. Maybe not many people want it now, but it'll be a different story in two years' time if we've got the prospect of, say, a new Jedi Order with Karl Urban as Kyle Katarn and Henry Cavill as Jagged Fel, for instance.

Either way, I hope I'm wrong. I hope both films are successful and lead to a litany of further films and great Lego sets. I'm just dubious.

A lot of negative things about the Rey Movie, The Director's comments aren't good, I won't get into what she has said or what she does but I think you know what she's about, Rey is a character that most people either don't like or care about, it's not enough to pull in people in the cinema and make money, 200M at most it might make but idk

Mando has a bigger chance  but even then I don't know if it will do well, SW is basically a dead brand at this stage or very close to it, people have given up on it

I'm quite happy to not get into what directors have said as it's not really on topic about Lego, but I have genuinely got no idea what the supposed issue is, even after looking it up.

The idea that the film will make barely 200m is laughable, to be honest. I know the sequel trilogy was divisive, but they still made bank off each movie there - and Daisy's performance as Rey is usually cited as one of the strongest aspects of it even among people who disliked it. It'll bring in a lot of viewers - those who always watch anything Star Wars, those who want a good family film at Christmas time - even if it's terrible. If it's not terrible, it'll be a few days before word gets out that it's actually good and people will go to see it. And the main thing going for it is that it's not going to have an insurmountable required buy-in. Presumably you'll only need to have seen at most the sequels to enjoy it, compared to Mando, which requires you to have seen multiple TV shows of questionable quality.

Star Wars is far from a dead brand. If it was, Lego wouldn't continue to make so many sets for the theme, including numerous UCS sets

It's pretty dead. Only nostalgia is keeping it going. There's a reason why Lego keeps recycling the old (read: EPI-VI) stuff: it's what sells. There is the odd blip of Mando or Ahsoka, but for the most part, Star Wars is a dying animal. That's what happens when you milk a franchise for all its worth.

Given Lucasfilm's announcement to release ratio, as well as other Disney studio projects (Blade!), I'm very skeptical about either Mando/Grogu or Rey ever leaving development hell. Mando has the best shot of releasing (secret trailers will help with that), but Rey smells of the Blade treatment. Indefinite delays, which may turn into a Disney+ series (a la Boba Fett & Obi-Wan).

If Mando Movie comes out, we'll get sets, I'm sure they'll do well. If (Coruscant-sized if) Rey releases, we'll get sets for that, it'll do about as well as Solo or TROS, then back to the classics.

If Lego wants to tackle projects with actual hype, then the games are where to go imo. Jedi series, maybe Outlaws (that's on the level of Skeleton Crew in terms of hype), possible remake of KOTOR (or even releasing stuff from the original games) all are good starting points for fresh ideas.

I don't think she's qualified to do a Star Wars film. Her only fantasy film credit is the Ms Marvel tv series. I'm sure she's a great documentarian, but I'm struggling to see the logic in giving her a Star Wars trilogy to direct.

Give us an AT-AT based on Endor, how about that?

Honestly, we're pretty well covered on Imperial and Rebel vehicles right now, with few notable exceptions (they could run through the Alphabet wings again, but outside of capital ships, not much is missing), so I wouldn't be surprised if they slowed up OT sets in general. That either means more PT/ST/D+ sets, or lighter waves in general.

Well, I’d arguably say that the Empire is currently lacking in the ground vehicle department.

Infantry, Capital Ships and star-fighter corps are at an all time high right now though. So I’m thankful for that.

I would be down for that. Especially if they based it off the BF 2015 Endor Skirmish game mode.

Agreed. Nothing against her. But it’s like getting Christopher Nolan to direct an episode of Peppa Pig.

Or in terms of comic books: getting Garth Ennis to write innocent Teenage Spider-Man.

They’re just not qualified for that currently due to it being a huge change.

They don't really have any.

We've just gotten a fairly recent AT-AT, and AT-ST. Multiple speeder bikes, even some extra (i.e. non-saga) vehicles like the Marauder. You got to remember, from an OT perspective, we're all set. Sure, RO introduced the Hovertank and Mando S2 gave us the Juggernaut, but I'd be hard pressed to expect sets for those unless new media dictates it.

I know. OT fans are eating extraordinarily well this year. I’m just saying that there are currently no affordable imperial ground vehicles (non speederbike that is) on shelves. The AT ST and Marauder are now retired.

I’m overall very happy about how much Lego’s covered the empire over the last decade (except for the lack of ITT and Tie Reaper. The former is absurd to me as A) it’s been in so much content at this point, and B) it’s an automatic incentive for people to buy more battlepacks to fill up the troop compartments.

That was meant to be my point from earlier by the time the Mando film and Thrawn film comes out there will have been enough time from the release of these sets for new sets based on these films to be released. I think it’s MandalorianKnight on here who always has a good point that there are certain vehicles that should always be remade every 4/5 years so the next generation of Star Wars fans and LEGO fans can get iconic vehicles. What Lego has been good at imo is redoing vehicles but changing what media it is from. For example the Hoth ATST or the ATTE from ROTS and even the Clone gunship.

on the 2025 front what is allegedly supposed to be coming out for SW? I know Skeleton Crew is December and if it is popular maybe there might be a spoiler set at some point.
Andor is coming is there supposed to be a film in 2025? I’m hoping 2025 will be a year Lego can go back through and give us something new that might have been missed or not remade for a long time

The next film is Mando in May 2026. Fairly sure Andor is the only new release next year so it'll probably be a good opportunity to fill in some blanks.

Watching The Phantom Menace yesterday, it occurred to me that we've never had the ship that takes the Jedi Council to Naboo at the end. I'm surprised at that really - it's a unique vehicle with plenty of flexibility in terms of figs, take your pick of which notable Jedi you want to whack in there, maybe even a combo of super popular Jedi and complete nobody. Yoda and Adi Gallia for instance.

We need an ITT immediately. Major missed opportunity when they released the Marauder, a less exciting vehicle, that carries less troops, and is on screen for part of a single episode of the Mandalorian.

We also need a GOOD AT-ST, at a proper scale like 2009, and with actual posable legs. Next year is a good opportunity to do an Endor variant.

Maybe I’m arm-chairing too much here, but I think LSW has dropped the ball on releasing troop-carrying sets to coincide with battle packs. How many additional snowtrooper battle packs were sold to fill up UCS walkers? Certainly not a negligible amount. Why is there no way to fill up the current AT-TE beyond bricklink? Why, when attempting a gunship, a vehicle renowned for its troop-carrying ability, do you make it smaller and less able to carry troops?

What ship is that?

Oh, that ship. I think it would make a nice Starship Collection set in the $60 range or a nice playset in the $160 range.

I think the Mando film is 100% happening at this point, they've been shooting, there was a trailer- I can't think of any star wars movies/shows that had a trailer-with actual film footage, not like Rogue Squadron where it was just the director saying hi- and were then cancelled. Plus it's by far the most popular thing to come out of star wars in decades. It's their safest bet.

I am glad people are remembering this and happy I am recognized as a champion of this strategy. I know a lot of people who collect for awhile get annoyed when sets/locations they already have are remade, but kids (and adults who are just getting in/back in to the theme) should almost always be able to get their hands on an X-wing/Tie Fighter/Falcon/etc. It's a smart financial move by lego and it helps new fans get in to the hobby.

According to Wookieepedia, the Perpetuus

I'd prefer the flying sandcrawler with AT-AT legs (sand walker?) and jedi masters Cad Bane, Palpatine, and Jabba from Rebuild the Galaxy to that ship. Throw in the traitorous Han Solo for good measure. Because reasons!

Knowing LEGO, this will never happen. we got one playset for the 25th anniversary of TPM. Its an obscure vehicle and were already overdue for an MTT and a republic cruiser.

I think were overdue for a Y-wing in that regard, next year will be 8 years since the last one.

The Naboo Royal Starship? The Lucrehulk? The Trade Federation dropship? Ah, the other one.

There are a lot of ships we haven’t gotten yet. I’m not sure how well they’d all sell, but still. Hopefully they do fill in more gaps. The Jedi one you suggested could be cool, and I like the suggestion of random or lesser known Jedi included (Yarael Poof and Yaddle, please). Padawan Anakin and blue-robed Palpatine would be welcome inclusions, too. However, there are a lot of potential sets to fill that $100-$170 spot.

In regards to the Rey film, I saw that during a Collider Q&A today or yesterday, Daisy Ridley said that it is still coming. Honestly, I’m glad they’re taking their time. They need to get this one right, and though I like the Sequels, the rushed production did them no favors.

I remember someone years ago (before there was such a thing as a Clone Wars series) theorising that we didn't have a Naboo Royal Starship because of the sheer amount of chrome pieces it would need. You could do it in dark grey I suppose, but it might look like a dodgy attempt at the Sith Infiltrator!!

I suspect the lucrehulk (assuming it's what I think it is) has never been done because it would need to be a huge set and the options for compelling minifigures are few. At that price point you'd want more than Nute Gunray and a couple of battle droids.

I agree with you on the Rey film (I still think it'll end up being X, XI and XII) - the sequels were undeniably imperfect, and there's room to learn from their missteps. Maybe we'll get a Jedi with an orange or brown light saber, and force Lego to release a new saber colour!

5 actually. There was the red one in TROS. But still in need of a remake. Much like the A-Wing.

Funny that’s about the same time since, oh no…. Luke’s Landspeeder.

Also the downscaled rebel one from Yavin IV, making it a whopping 1 year since our last one, but if we're specifically talking about rebel ones at proper playscale then it definitely is 8, so definitely way overdue.

The Perpetuus is super unlikely. When was the last time we had a large ship that only serves as a transport and isn‘t involved in a single action scene? The only broad appeal would be the potential minifigs.

The IT-S I guess, so 4 years ago? Although I don't know what it was involved in in Galaxy's Edge, to be fair.

Perpetuus would be neat, but it's time for me to toot the 'Radiant VII needs a remake' trumpet - if we get a capital ship from TPM, it should be that one.
