Also, Boba ironically benefitted from having less screen time/lines in ESB than Phasma did in TFA - What little we get do of him (tracking the Falcon to Cloud City, his brief firefight with Luke) combined with the handful of lines from and about him (“No disintegrations.”, “What if he doesn’t survive? He’s worth a lot to me.”, etc) give him just enough characterisation while preserving his overall mysterious badass vibe. Moreover, Boba actually won in his first appearance - He successfully tracks the Falcon to Cloud City, then escapes with Han to collect his bounty! Phasma never gets a win, so it is difficult to take her seriously. Edited November 4, 2024 by Classic_Spaceman Quote

I think that was said in response to Alexandria saying that The Force Awakens is one of the best Star Wars films from a technical standpoint, but noted that Empire wasn't a contender because it has timeline issues (I think the argument basically boils down to the question of "How long did Luke train on Dagobah? If he had to spend several weeks/months working on his skills, then how did Leia and Han not starve, or Vader just give up the hunt? And if it was only a few days, how did he progress so quickly?). As far as what Renny was saying, though, I do agree - story issues and technical issues are two different things. The Sequels do have some things that, from a technical level, so look good - I'm not a fan at all of The Last Jedi, but I can't deny that The Holdo Maneuver and Crait look really cool. From a story perspective though - I don't like those particular scenes (If the Holdo Maneuver works, then why not send droid piloted ships into the Death Star, or into planets? And if it really was a one-in-a-million shot, why did the First Order freak out so much when they realized what she was doing? How was Rose able to catch up to crash into Finn's ship - and, how did they both get back to the base fast enough to escape, without getting shot by all of the ships looking at them/stopped by Kylo?). Conversely, while the technical depiction of most of The Clone Wars and Rebels isn't my usual cup of tea, I really like those stories and characters. Bringing it back to Lego, as far as what I buy goes, I do think that there's a balance of "I think it looks cool" and "I like the characters/scenes that come from this set." I own some minifigures and sets just because I think that they look cool, even if I don't fully like or even know their story - I know nothing about BB-9E from the movies, but I have him just because I think he looks cool. Other times, I'll get a set just for the character even though I don't like the way the set looks - the Rex microfighter being a recent example (not that his ship looks bad, I'm just not a Microfighter guy). Ideally, most of my purchases will check both of those boxes, but that's not always the case. I'll usually put more emphasis on connections to characters, locations, or vehicles over just the visual appearance, though - but I know some people buy very different than that, which is totally fine! And since we all can enjoy the same thing for very different reasons, I think arguing about it is all just rather silly. Quote

It is the correct choice. TFA is ANH 2: Force Boogaloo. ROTS is Shakespeare, A Star Wars story (thematically, at the very least). And the locations of ROTS are a lot more visually striking, alongside better battle sequences. I liked TFA when it released, but it's incomparable to any of the original six films. Quote

That's part of the production process. Maybe 'technical' gave a too-specific impression, but to be clear by technical I'm referring to the entire production process, from draft screenplay to picture lock. ESB is a very good film, and probably more impactful than TFA, but it's not a perfect film. In my eyes, actually, that's held back Star Wars ever since. There's a sense that everything has to measure up to ESB and hope to match its quality - but we can and should be hoping for films that are better than it, because it's absolutely possible to be better. TFA in my opinion managed this as a technical piece, but failed to resonate in quite the same way, and was let down by its sequels moreso than ESB was. 9 minutes ago, ARC2149Nova said: And the locations of ROTS are a lot more visually striking Some of the locations are more visually striking, sure, but the way they're shot is not as good as TFA. There isn't a single shot in AOTC or ROTS, and probably not more than three or four in the first four films put together, that are as visually stunning as certain shots of Rey in front of the downed Star Destroyer, and the moment where Rey and Finn arrive as Han is walking to meet Kylo and we get a beautiful tableau with the shaft of sunlight breaking the darkness is incredibly cinematic. And I wonder if that contributes to how the films' reputations are seen. Take Lego for example - with enough bricks, anyone can build a MOC of Utapau or the Jedi Temple or Felucia and it's immediately recognisable. ROTS has striking locations, as you say. TFA's locations aren't necessarily as visually striking, but the way they are shot demonstrates a mastery of the craft. But it's hard to replicate. Building the interior of Starkiller Base without replicating the cinematography makes it look far more drab Quote

TFA in my opinion managed this as a technical piece, but failed to resonate in quite the same way, and was let down by its sequels moreso than ESB was. I understood what you ment by timeline, you conveyed that clearly but I still personally don't agree. I feel surely if we expand technical to include pretty much every part of the filmmaking process then surely TFA now has the technical issues with how it's so interested in it's mystery boxes it skims over a lot of basic characterisation to the point that despite the film's inciting incident Finn being torn up seeing a stormtrooper die he, nor the film itself never shows any sympathy for these brainwashed child soldiers again. Or how poorly conveyed the first order/resistance are as factions, how the CG on Maz Kanata is nearly as distracting as the multiple times a scene will stop to show a prop from the OT being held in severance and such. Of course all of that is just my opinion but I think that if we're talking script faults TFA definitely has at least as many as ESB and I think that's evident in it not striking the same emotional core. The point of art as a concept is to tell stories that resonate and TFA isn't really much of story, everything in it is kinda just the superficial beats of a Star wars film without the emotional investment like (with how we get our fourth trench run but instead of any of the characters we care about being involved it's the kinda funny pilot guy who disappeared from most of the movie) or with how we don't really have enough context for anything that happens in the film to mean anything (We get the set up to Rey and Finn's arcs, but because they wanted to bait and switch the audience with who the real lead is we don't really get any pay off to their arcs here, that's shunted to TLJ, Luke has an arc in all three OT films but we have an entire film of characters telling Finn he needs to fight for a cause and Rey she needs to move on from her parents but they don't really change at all until the next one) it's all set up but set up can't sustain a movie, the set up has nothing to say in my opinion and doesn't really work as a film on it's own because of that. Probably just comes down to my personal perspective but I think the ultimate technical failing of any piece of art is surely not leaving an impression, the Room is gonna stick with me as it's trying to say something and how it fails to do so tells me about the failings of Tommy Wiseu. The Force Awakens tells me I should be excited for the next films but nothing else, so when I know the next films didn't do anything with the already shallow threads this one set up Or idk, maybe I'm just mad because if this film didn't popularise the fanwanky legacy sequel to Gen X properties I wouldn't be living in a world where I'm expected to be emotionally invested in the megablocking Ghostbusters Edited November 5, 2024 by Renny The Spaceman Quote

It's so amazing that this is the movie that broke popculture discussion, and to this day we can feel its repercussions—especially in the context of Star Wars itself, where the executives are quaking in their boots, unable to take any kind of risk or produce another movie (except for a glorified Disney+ episode).
