I feel surely if we expand technical to include pretty much every part of the filmmaking process then surely TFA now has the technical issues with how it's so interested in it's mystery boxes it skims over a lot of basic characterisation to the point that despite the film's inciting incident Finn being torn up seeing a stormtrooper die he, nor the film itself never shows any sympathy for these brainwashed child soldiers again. Or how poorly conveyed the first order/resistance are as factions, how the CG on Maz Kanata is nearly as distracting as the multiple times a scene will stop to show a prop from the OT being held in severance and such. We can differ on this but I feel like these are different elements. We don't need to know any more about the Resistance/First Order as factions in order for the film on its own to hold up - they're very clearly based around stock archetypes, and we get enough flesh on the bones to give the narrative colour. Sure, for the world of Star Wars as a whole it's interesting to know how the First Order arose, why the Resistance is separate from the Republic, etc., but these are ancillary questions not essential to TFA. I didn't personally find Maz' CG distracting - and if we're going down that path, then the entire prequel trilogy can be written off as the CGI has aged appallingly there. The principal characters in TFA do all have arcs with a resolution. Finn goes from being a cog in the Imperial machine to a wannabe runaway to someone willing to put their life on the line for those they love and vice-versa (the fact that the latter two beats are retrodden in TLJ isn't the fault of TFA). Rey learns how to be a part of something larger than herself. Kylo Ren develops further down the path to the Dark Side, capped off by killing Han, but deepens his insecurities in the process. These arcs don't have capstones but they do have clear starts and ends, which is what you want from the first part of a trilogy. Poe doesn't really have an arc but he's also a secondary character in TFA; it's not until TLJ that he really becomes a primary character on the same level as the others. But I digress - this isn't really about the bricks any more!! Quote

But I digress - this isn't really about the bricks any more!! With the first part it is important to know how the factions work because it is a sequel, the Rebels won at the end of the last one and now their still rebels and the empire is still in power, it's unsatisfying and confusing and winds up undermining every film in this trilogy because why should I believe it's over this time, why won't I believe a 4th galactic empire will form by the time these characters start going grey. Right but the issue is none of those arcs are what gets focus in the films, Finn's defection happens in the first 15 minutes and from the minute his switch flipped from baddie to goodie he's willing to risk his life for his friends, the film is filled with constant characters. Rey becoming part of something bigger also isn't really something that affects her character (throughout the whole trilogy really, it's really jarring in the third when she's now a big shot resistance hero when until that film she's distinctly doing her own thing, I know in the year between films that she could have done a bunch of missions for the rebels and made all these connections but we don't see it so it doesn't really hit) her arc is clear set up as to stop looking to her past and to move on and that doesn't really go anywhere this film. Kylo develops further down the path, sure, but we didn't see it start so it feels like more of an IOU for a future development. I feel all these characters are hindered by the fact they want them to be twists so we don't get time to properly get them, Kylo being Han's son is a twist so we don't really get much set up for his insecurity before he takes his helmet off. Rey is set up pretty well but what she has of an arc ends on Takodana when she speaks to Maz and choses to go find Luke instead of going back to Jakuu, TLJ has this issue too as Rey pretty much isn't even in that third act on Crait there, and this leads to her character having a lot of dead space where the films just sorta have her fight bad guys with no emotional investment for the third act both times (I'm discounting tRoS for the trilogies benefit as they just try rush Luke's Episode 6 arc there with no set up, that's not fair to Rey to count that) Finn is supposed to just be a supporting character but they wanted to do the twist where you think they'll actually have the one black character do anything, then it turns out he's just they for the others to bounce off so the hook of his character (Child soldier who's brainwashed to fight for a cause and gets out) is pretty much forgotten and changed to him just being a silly janitor who has no moral dilemma with killing the other child soldiers as their now all comedic dumb henchmen (OT gets away with this by never telling us about how stormtroopers join, so the audience assumes they're just classic henchmen who choose to be evil for the pay. TFA makes Finn a child soldier to remove any accountability from him for being part of a fascist empire but doesn't think about the tonal dissonance that causes when for the rest of the film the Stormies are comic in nature) Of course it's all comes down to opinions but as someone who cares a lot about film as a medium and doesn't care at all for star wars as a series anymore it's very structurally messy in a way that makes it so that if it never got a sequel it would just be an empty calorie of a movie, if it works for you that's great, I'm happy for you but I'm never gonna be able to see it that way. But on the topic of bricks did you know every day before filming his scenes on this film Adam Driver would eat half a bowl of LEGO bricks? TLJ is one of the worst movies I've seen. It's a ripoff of ESB and RotJ rolled into one and has a whole lot of scenes that aren't even consistent within the movie itself, nevermind with the rest of the franchise. Quote

See, this is judging TFA for its place in the series. I'm talking about it strictly on its own merits - for that, how it links to RotJ or TLJ isn't meaningful. 1 hour ago, Renny The Spaceman said: Right but the issue is none of those arcs are what gets focus in the films, Finn's defection happens in the first 15 minutes and from the minute his switch flipped from baddie to goodie he's willing to risk his life for his friends I think that's a very reductive view of Finn's arc. Yes, his disillusionment happens early on, but if you actually look at what he does in the first two thirds of the film and why, he's always motivated by self-interest first. He doesn't rescue Poe because he believes in the cause, he rescues Poe because he wants to leave the First Order and Poe is a pilot. He's quick to go with Rey, but he's also happy to lie and pretend he's a Resistance fighter because that's what benefits him. Even on Takodana, he straight up goes over to talk to characters (one of whom is a certain Sidon Ithano) who can get him on a ship far away from the Order and the fight in general. It's not until he realises Rey is in danger that Finn actually does anything that's not out of self-interest. And even then he lies to the Resistance, potentially putting their best fighters in jeopardy, because it gets him closer to Rey. Later on he gets to pay off the start of his arc by confronting the people he ran away from, as an actualised Resistance fighter. 1 hour ago, Renny The Spaceman said: Rey is set up pretty well but what she has of an arc ends on Takodana when she speaks to Maz and choses to go find Luke instead of going back to Jakuu I'd argue that what you're calling the end of her arc is actually the turning point. Rey's whole thing is about belonging. Helping the Resistance, and seeking out Luke so she can better understand her power and her place, is the fulfilment of her arc. It's also mirroring the start of her arc. At the beginning, she is a self-sufficient loner because that's what she thinks will serve her best. At the end, she's the representative of hope going to bring a self-sufficient loner out of exile. 1 hour ago, Renny The Spaceman said: Finn is supposed to just be a supporting character but they wanted to do the twist where you think they'll actually have the one black character do anything I think that's an unfair assessment. Star Wars has always had a three-protagonist structure. In ANH it's Luke, Han, Obi-Wan; in ESB and RotJ it's Luke, Leia, Han; in the prequels it's Obi-Wan, Anakin, Padmé. Finn is part of TFA's triad, and a main character (as opposed to someone like Han or Hux or Jessika Pava whose main narrative role is as support to more important arcs/utilitarian moments). Taking just TFA on its own, Finn is arguably the significant driver of the entire plotline. It's him that breaks Poe out, thus starting the narrative. It's him that saves Rey. It's him that pretends to be Resistance. It's him that comes up with the plan to destroy Starkiller Base from the inside. The fact that he's not given solid material in TRoS and to a latter extent TLJ is those respective films' failings, not TFA's. 1 hour ago, Renny The Spaceman said: TLJ has this issue too as Rey pretty much isn't even in that third act on Crait there, and this leads to her character having a lot of dead space where the films just sorta have her fight bad guys with no emotional investment for the third act both times I don't disagree on this at all. TLJ has some excellent moments, and some of the bits the Internet has clowned on aren't actually bad if you give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's still a much more sloppy narrative. 1 hour ago, Renny The Spaceman said: But on the topic of bricks did you know every day before filming his scenes on this film Adam Driver would eat half a bowl of LEGO bricks? Swordy Posted November 5, 2024 Posted November 5, 2024 17 hours ago, Alexandrina said: Timeline issues (and to be clear, I'm talking about internally within the film, not the larger Star Wars timeline) are a continuity issue. That's part of the production process. Maybe 'technical' gave a too-specific impression, but to be clear by technical I'm referring to the entire production process, from draft screenplay to picture lock. ESB is a very good film, and probably more impactful than TFA, but it's not a perfect film. In my eyes, actually, that's held back Star Wars ever since. There's a sense that everything has to measure up to ESB and hope to match its quality - but we can and should be hoping for films that are better than it, because it's absolutely possible to be better. TFA in my opinion managed this as a technical piece, but failed to resonate in quite the same way, and was let down by its sequels moreso than ESB was. I believe that because no one is upset about timeline issues that TESB is a perfect film. The only reason why people (like just now) complain about continuity issues in TLJ is because that film failed to connect to half of its audience (more or less half, still). The beauty of a film is when you forget that it’s a film, and you’re just along for the journey. I adore TESB; it’s my favourite Star Wars film, and maybe even my favourite film of all time. Yes, we always should strive to be better, yet there’s a special magic to that film, such that, unless the stars realign again, nothing can or will replace that film. However, I can only offer my opinion as an unabashed lover of TESB. By the way, while I’m in this vein of discussion, I put TFA above RotS, albeit barely. (TFA is #4, RotS #5, in my ranking.) One is simply more enjoyable to me than the other. TFA is frustrating as the seventh installment in the Skywalker Saga, reversing everything accomplished in the sixth and reverting all the OT characters to how they started in ANH, but Daisy as Rey and John as Finn still warm my heart. Again, there’s a special air to that film, an eagerness, that can’t be replicated. RotS isn’t a bad film, and an amazing piece of connecting tissue between the PT and the OT; it’s just not as enjoyable, that’s all. 8 hours ago, CloneCommando99 said: Perhaps it’s the 2nd Andor set there’s been murmurings about? I’d adore a Narkina V diorama with Kino (ONE WAY OUT!). Anything more with Andor would be fantastic in my book. Y’know, it’s ironic that, for all of the truly great female characters Andor introduced, we’ve gotten only male characters from Andor. Dedra, Bix, and Vel are only the few names of the top of my head. I’d love a Maarva minifig, as incredibly unlikely that is. I definitely think it's an issue with media discussion in general that people are willing to overlook minor flaws in things they enjoy and be harsh on those same flaws in things they don't enjoy. I've had people jumping down my throat in the past on other sites for saying that I think there are small issues with ESB - not that I don't enjoy it, or think it's great, but that there are some things which could be better. (And this goes for all films). With ESB specifically, I have a theory that while it's a very good film as a whole, the fact that the final act is one of the best in all of cinema, and had fifteen years to gestate before the Internet became widespread, has inflated its reputation a little bit; the film up to the reveal of Vader on Bespin is a lot more inconsistent than the film on the home stretch. I love it despite the flaws, mind. I think part of it is that a true masterpiece gets you subconsciously, and it's hard to say for sure what was so intoxicating about it. When a film doesn't quite hit you the same way the natural response is to look for reasons why. I've done the same with James Bond. I used to nitpick the tiniest details that I had no issue with in other films, but to be honest it was just that I was too young to appreciate the film Quote

I’d even say that it’d probably be one of my top 3 SW films if they hadn’t done Luke as dirty as they did. Holdo Manoeuvre is cool but it kind of destroys the point of SW space battles. Those are my only criticisms. Otherwise very solid film. And would be regarded as such if it wasn’t in the SW franchise. My personal favourite Disney SW movie is Rogue One. Despite its large roster of main characters it somehow manages to make them all compelling. The cinematography is also superb. You actually feel the threat of the empire. And it manages to balance the darkness of a war story with the themes of hope that makes the basis of SW. What kid cares about drab-looking bases or a prison? Things like the Arrestor cruiser had way too little screentime to justify a playset. If you say Quadjumper (which ironically appeared in the show), that was for TFA, which cannot be compared to anything that came since, hype- and merch-wise. The TIE Reaper was way more prominent in Rogue One. Quote

What can they really do from S1 besides the Fondor? That's true, but LEGO is known for scraping the bottom of every barrel when making Star Wars sets. So, to give you an idea (besides Luthen's Fondor, which looks incredible and is the obvious option): • Mon Mothma's limousine combined with Luthen's artifact gallery; includes Mon Mothma, Luthen Rael, Klera Marki, and Vel Sartha (I know it doesn't sound super exciting, but I think it'd be a really unique set with key Rebellion figures) • TIE Fighter; includes Vel Sartha, Cinta Kaz, Taramyn Barcona, and a TIE Fighter Pilot (we haven't had one of those for a while) • Aldhani Rono frighter; includes Cassian Andor, Karis Nemik, Arvel Skeen, Gorn, and Jayhold Beehaz (this could make for a really cool set actually, especially with the minifigures) • Narkina 5 console room; includes Cassian Andor, Kino Loy, and two Console Guards (again, I know this doesn't sound exciting, but the Narkina 5 outfits are very desirable, and we've gotten way more niche sets in the past) • Imperial repulsocraft from Ferrix; includes Brasso, B2EMO, Vanis Tigo, and a Stormtrooper (generic Imperial vehicle, LEGO loves those) • Ferrix riot breakout with an Imperial prison cell and a Ferrix structure; includes Cassian Andor, Bix Caleen, Dedra Meero, and a Death Trooper (I feel like Ferrix is cool enough to warrant a location set, the minifigures would also be desirable) So yeah, I might be stretching it a bit, but I think all of those would make pretty awesome, unique sets. Mothma's limousine would be really unique in contrast with all the other sets on the shelves, while Narkina 5 set would give people a very iconic outfit and character. I've deisgned the Aldhani heist sets in a way that they complete each other—a vehicle for both the Rebels and the Empire, and it includes all main Rebels from Aldhani spread across two sets. I've done the same with the Ferrix riot sets, where you can get a lot of key characters, but this time combining a location and a vehicle. Unfortunately, LEGO will probably never do any of those. Why make Andor sets when you can do another Clone Battle Pack or a Mandalorian speeder, eh? Edited November 5, 2024 by THELEGOBATMAN Quote
