You can be positive about your product without coming off like a smug nerf herder.

"Why do you think we made the wrong figure for this set? Why do you think we cut so many corners? Don't our decisions (made purely for profit margin) make so much more sense? Your feeble collector minds can't comprehend the layers behind our genius set design."

I am obviously exaggerating, but I swear the Khetanna interview was the most irritating thing I've read from the design team. It beats the Clone Pilot debacle by a mile for me. I honestly don't even think brickset was satisfied with their answers - they were basically told to answer their own questions!

Even with past controversies, the design team always came off as more "this is simply what we're working with/our thought process went like this" vs "it is what it is. Deal with it."

Thing is, I think designers often get wheeled out to answer questions like this that aren't entirely within their control to change. A lot of that Brickset interview - which was really interesting, and I'm glad they were afforded the opportunity at least! - did essentially seem to boil down to 'we don't have the budget'. With that being the number one constraint a set is given, there's not a huge amount they can do to change it once they've been told what it is. Particularly so once IP taxes are taken into account (which might just be me, but seems like these have got worse in the last few years, not just for Star Wars).

All that being said - I agree that some of the answers were unsatisfactory at best.

Do you think that night troopers in new battlepack will be same as night trooper from peridea battle set?

Ideally no Night Trooper should look like the other, so there should be four unique ones in the battlepack. Knowing LEGO on the other hand....

Dang that sucks, TCW season 7 Maul already came in a cheap set. Would have been way better if it was the Infiltrator version

Yeah, I’d have preferred that or even the TCW Season 4 Maul.

These days LSW most of the time is no longer fun for me (and I imagine for other AFOLs and for kids, too): You only get standalone (display) models, but the counterparts to play well with are missing. And since years there are no bigger decent locations to create with all together a nice and appealing layout. Very disappointing. :sadnew:

I don’t mind the microfighter too much but on balance I agree. It does feel like the days of getting sets that could be displayed and “played” with together have gone. I think Lego are really trying to appeal to Star Wars fans outside the usual AFOL demographic (as they’ve been doing with other themes as well. But it does mean we are getting less connectivity between sets.

For the 2 Jedi, I’m hoping we get Kit Fisto and maybe Sassee Tin.

Not a fan of the answer in the Brickset interview about the barge not having enough minifigures being to buy the ridiculously overpriced skiff when the skiff itself doesn't have a single guard (unless you count the inaccurate Boba, which I certainly don't) and those "Glup Shittos" are the minifigures that I actually want out of sets like this. It's why the Cantina is so good.

Technically no. If I recall correctly, there were about three main variants that were copy-and-pasted throughout the crowd of Night Troopers—then Captain Enoch, of course. Most of the merchandising (Funko and Hasbro off the top of my head) has featured about two or three variants of Night Troopers. So long as we get three variants, they should be varied enough to make for an interesting display.

What does that mean, there are 3 main variants? Every night trooper should have different (battle) damages to the armor and helmet. It is very unlikely that two troopers get the exact same damage that is repaired in the exact same way. When i look at the wookieepedia picture of Ezra and the six background actors in NT armor, they all look different. Copy/paste lazyness of digital troopers should not be the benchmark for merch or Lego minifigures.

No one team can be expected to possibly produce thousands of different troopers, thus the select number of variants. Real life costumes will be different, simply out of human error, but I don’t blame the CGI model makers for not randomly shuffling a few general designs. (Looking at the Thrawn arrival scene, I see maybe six different designs in the crowd, mostly differences in helmets.)

In universe, you are absolutely correct. I agree, it’d be wonderful if every trooper was unique.

In this galaxy, though, concessions were already made in the production of the show, so precedent has been there from the very beginning; that’s all I’m saying.

We'll see... The NT battlepack is one of the few sets we know for next year that i am exited about. So i hope the best. Fingers crossed!

I agree, I’ve seen a lot of complaints about it going around and I don’t understand it. I think any type of troop, especially the unique ones like that, that are unlikely to appear in a lot of sets, should get a Battle Pack so people can collect them

Not to mention they’re just awesome

Kinda hope one of them is a Death Trooper variant

(…and we could then go into a lengthy debate on the true meaning of that slogan, but I believe I agree with your general point.)

Same here! Looking forward to the battlepack, whatever it entails.

Ha, me too. I can normally wait a year to grab it on discount, but there are so many sets I want Day 1 next year: Superman Mech, Andor U-Wing, Fantastic Four set, and hopefully the Ewok Village.

Oh, and I still need to grab the Daily Bugle, Rivendell, and Cody’s AT-TE before they retire. It’s about to be a tough year.

Also I hate these mechs and microfighters, If it was just Playsets then both demographics can enjoy them, When I was a kid I would rather have playsets but I guess this new gen likes these mechs, I'm 20 now

I totally agree, and I still believe that the kids would prefer playsets, too. That's what Lego is about afterall compared to other toys; everything in principle fits to the same universe, even the minidolls and traditional Lego figures share the same universe.

I remember that as a kid we did find some funny problems with my sister when my spiderman action figure tried to make a visit to my sister's doll house, but he got stuck into the door...

Anyway, I would guess that the mechs and microfighters are just a solution to the dropping price level of birthday gifts. It used to be 20 € when I was working in a toyshop, so the logic went

"Something Lego, something Star Wars, around 20 € for my son's friend Bob" = a battlepack

Nowadays I guess it goes like

"Something Lego, something Star Wars, around 15 € for my son's friend Bob" = a microfighter

Microfighters are a good opportunity to get a minifig :shrug_confused:

I still am angry about myself for not getting the Zorii Bliss microfighter at the local supermarket when it was on shelves.

True, but some smaller sets akin to Jedi Defense 1+2, Final Duel 1+2, and Jabba's Message/Prize, would give more minifigures for about the same price and they still exist for other themes (e.g. the Guardians of the Galaxy Headquarters set was cheaper than microfighters and came with 2 minifigures plus some nice usable scenery rather than what we tend to get in Star Wars with a build for the sake of having a build).

The 3-figure "accessory packs" also gave a much better value per-figure, and came with actual usable builds instead of a weirdly-proportioned ship or a completely useless mech. I really wish they'd continued those (but without the unnecessary plastic packaging).

I got that one at the time even though I had the larger set so I didn’t really need it. But two weeks ago after my son saw Rose of Skywalker for the first time I gave it to him and he was absolutely ecstatic. I always just go for it because you just never know when you’ll be super glad you did

Honestly in general microfighters and mechs are fantastic for kids. I have kids and I see what they like, and they always want the mechs and microfighters. They like playsets too, but they know that mechs and microfighters are easy ways to get great minifigs

Now I‘m really curious which highly requested minifigs they‘re talking about here since the answer heavily depends on who you ask :laugh_hard: I for one would be over the moon if it was Babu Frik, while others wouldn‘t care at all. There are hardly any minifigs the entire fandom would agree on

I can think of a few. Captain Enoch, Kit Fisto, Mara Jade, Commander Wolffe, Dedra Meero, Mara Jade, Captain Keeli, Prune-face, Glup Shitto, Jesse, Doctor Aphra, Commander Bacara, Mara Jade, Captain Pellaeon, Director Krennic, Grand Moff Tarkin, any and all unmade clone troopers, Imperial Jump Troopers, Mara Jade, Warlord Zsinj, Jacen Solo, Jains Solo, Commander Pyre, ET, Black Krissantan and maybe even Mara Jade?

Couldn’t care less about getting any non canon lego stuff so Mara Jade would not interest me

Should they produce one-off sets from past Disney+ shows, I can see a lot of highly-requested figures officially realized. I’d also like to put forward Sidon Ithano, the third-coolest character, if we get an iteration of Maz’s Castle. Then, of course, there’s Mara Jade.

I agree on Enoch, Dedra, Pellaeon, Bacara, and Krssantan, but the rest aren't really all that special I think. We've either had them before or they're not even canon

Don't care about Enoch, already have Kit Fisto, Mara Jade would be nice, but I'm content with my custom, I'd rather get 327th/21st over any of the Filoni clones, Aphra is nice but eh, they've already made like six Tarkins (3 but still), They've already made Krennic, IJTs are cool, ET already exists (Dimensions), Pyre is just Gold Phasma, Jacen and Jaina would be nice but they're far too irrelevant at this point, Krrsantan is also okay.

Canon is a point of view. Always has been, always will be. Less non-canon, more...alternate history.

If there is a new clone commander coming, I feel like Wolffe is the most obvious candidate right? There are some others who are requested, but I think Plo is almost certainly going to show up in another set and Wolffe is bound to show up with him. Not to mention that Lego seems to enjoy keeping at least one character in any given large-ish set exclusive, and again, Wolffe just makes the most sense with Plo. I guess we've just got to wait a little while and see though.

Plo probably does show up in something else at some point, but if we're going to start using microfighters to get new/previously UCS-locked versions of desirable characters, I'll give up all my complaints about the gimmick. That's a huge boon to kids and Afols alike.

Peridea set is down to $44 in most places. Great location set, it really creates an atmosphere representative of the show. I've removed most of my characters from it and have Ahsoka fighting Baylan- I'm going to make a little version of the shrine from episode 4 in the center.

This is true, but then they should just SAY "we don't have the budget." Not to keep harping on what other toy designers do, but the transformers team literally told everyone "hey we ran out of budget so our upcoming wave is repaints/restocks" (and then used the restocks on characters who had been scalped or had distribution issues in the past). If the designers just said "we recognize you wanted X, unfortunately we didn't have the budget for it, so we went with Y.", it'd come off a lot better than these weird evading the question interviews. It's not like they're being interrogated either, these are pretty softball interviews and it's weird to see them come off so smug and evasive.

I'd be OK with them only having two unique leg prints or something but I think we need at least 3 each of torso and helmet designs.

I don't think a figure being canon automatically makes it desirable, or vice versa. I think a Revan fig would automatically sell whatever set it came from, despite the fact that his "canon-ness" extends to just a namedrop in a visual dictionary. And I think if you asked most fans if they'd rather have a major character from KOTOR or something like Outlaws, they'd choose KOTOR any day of the week.

And lego knows this - they made Malak an anniversary fig, after all.
