Kitty never had exposure in the 90s show

I agree with you on like 90% of this, but I think it's worth noting that a pilot was produced for 'Pryde of the X-Men' which has her in a large role (plus her name being in the title) that was originally intended to be a full show, that would've aired in the 90s.

Even silly stuff, like her being name-dropped in a Weezer song in the same breath as Nightcrawler - she hasn't so much stuck around, but she was really popular in the 90s.

Also, as one of the more well-known Jewish superheroes, she has a bit of a boost to her recognition.

Not that I think she's a huge priority for LEGO - I'd imagine that they'd go for some villains and some X-Men like Nightcrawler and Colossus before they'd get to her, but imo she's right at the end of the A-list X-Men.

Yes, Pryde of the X-Men was supposed to be its own series but it got a lot of negative reactions. Kitty, being the POV character of Pryde of the X-Men, got the most backlash so Marvel put a ban on her when they were making the 90s show. She wasn't allowed to be used so no one would associate the 90s show with Pryde of the X-Men's failure. I think the 90s X-Men showrunners did confirm that by later seasons, that ban was lifted and they could technically have used Kitty if they wanted. But by that point, there was nothing she could actually add to the show since Jubilee was already the POV character so they never bothered to include Kitty.

I think people don't realize how insignificant Kitty had become in the 90s, after basically a whole decade languishing in spinoff Excalibur away from the central X-Men books. Excalibur rarely got included in all the major X-Men crossovers of that era so that didn't help. As I said in my previous post/essay, Nightcrawler still had a lot more iconic status despite also languishing in Excalibur for that same whole period with Kitty. The best example of this is UXM #300, as Marvel had Nightcrawler guest-star in this anniversary issue. It was especially significant because this was Nightcrawler's first appearance in the flagship X-Men book since he left the team way back during the FOTM era (circa issue #225, so he hadn't appeared in the book for about 75 issues). It's pretty telling that Marvel included Nightcrawler for the X-Men's 300th issue but didn't bother including Kitty, even though she could just as easily have shown up with Nightcrawler since they were both on Excalibur together. In fact, Kitty's last appearance in UXM was also with Kurt during FOTM, so they had both been absent from the flagship title for the same length of time but Marvel felt only Nightcrawler was necessary for the 300th issue, not Kitty. She was not deemed as central to the X-Men's mythos, whereas there was a need to bring back Nightcrawler to reunite him on-panel with Wolverine, Storm, and Colossus.

When she was created, she was one of the first openly Jewish characters. But since that time, more popular characters have since been retconned as being Jewish like Magneto and the Thing (in his case maybe not so much a retcon as much as a belated reveal decades in the waiting).

That's basically how I feel. I consider her an A-list X-Man but at the tail-end of the A-list X-Men members when it comes to minifigure treatment. I really do believe the lack of codename and costume hurt her here. She has no brand the way the other X-Men do, whether Colossus, Gambit, Psylocke, Angel, etc. It should also be noted that when Marvel used to release posters and merchandise of their characters in the 2000s, they included all the major X-Men except for Kitty. She was never one of the clipart characters, to give you two examples below. They would regularly showcase Wolverine, Storm, Phoenix, Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, Colossus, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Gambit, and Psylocke but that was it. Kitty was never included. That was the 2000s so a lot has changed since then in terms of the characters that Marvel regularly promotes, particularly the ones who took off in the MCU (GOTG, Ms. Marvel becoming Captain Marvel, Miles Morales, etc.), but the X-Men have basically been in limbo since the MCU started so their status quo is still similar to what's depicted below.

Ngl that was a great essay I’d like more of them please

But that also shows they’re very willing to give us the bare minimum of characters so unless they have a prominent role in upcoming seasons of the show or the mcu reboot, I don’t see us getting them anytime soon

Lol I'm known for my "long essays" on other forums.

Agreed. Honestly, if we get a Sentinel standalone set, I think we'll just get recycled figures from the X-Mansion as much as I hate to think it. I'm not positive we would get a single new minifig. I think Lego feels they have completed their quota for X-Men characters as of now. They'll wait to see if there's demand for more, or they'll wait until the next X-Men representation, whether it's another season of the show or the MCU movies.

It looks like we’re indeed getting Arkham over on the DC side. Probably means next year the modular will go to DC and there won’t be one for Marvel.

I curse all of you with Marvel getting Shadowboxes instead of Modulars from now on, feel the pain us Lego DC feel

I don't think the quota has been filled just yet. I suspect they will at least follow through with either Nightcrawler, Jubilee or Cable after teasing them in the mansion and Cerebro.

I don't mind DC getting the modular spot given that the theme has been on life support the past few years. Hopefully Arkham doesn't suffer from the same size restrictions that the mansion did. I'm still keen to see what Marvel has in store for their D2C next year. We're overdue for a new Helicarrier set and there's still plenty of opportunities for non-modular location sets like Iron Man's Malibu Mansion or Asgard.

But that means the Sentinel Standalone set they "reported" on is likely fake/won't happen:

A giant red and blue shadowbox with a giant spider emblem cut out with a NYC skyline inside depicting Spider-Man fighting his iconic foes like Green Goblin and Doc Ock would be a dream come true, for fans of shelf warmers. Lego, if you are listening, don’t do it.

Hopefully we’ll get a Sentinel set that isn’t 60 dollars and only includes 3 repeats (2 from the X-Jet no less) and Morph.

A "X" Shaped Shadowbox showcasing a huge Danger Room COULD go hard. If done well.

I don't feel bad we're not getting a modular next year. DC deserves it after such a long dry season.

This confirms what I always expected that they won't release a Baxter Building immediately after one FF movie. I think 2026 could go to Oscorp Tower since the Daily Bugle will have retired by then.

I hate that I would buy this.

Oscorp makes sense. Like you say, the Bugle will be retired. Avengers, Batman and X-Men will all have a modular on the shelves. I can’t think of anyone else  who could carry a modular (granted, X-Men arguably don’t belong in that list either). Plus, there’s a new Spider-Man movie coming out that summer.

“They had us in the first half, not gonna lie.”

Agreed about the Sentinel. I got the mansion, and aside from the characters, the Sentinel might be my favorite part. It’s so well designed, the only complaint I have is the locked knees can make posing weird. Still, it’s great, and it would be a no-brained to make it widely available. That being said, hopefully it’s on the cheaper side, or there’s multiple included. Even $30 feels like a bit much for just one.

It certainly wouldn't be $60 unless they throw in a bigfig because that's what really messed up the value of the Leviathan set, and in this case it would have to be a brand new bigfig like Juggernaut or Colossus. I could definitely see them squeezing $40 out of us if it includes a motorcycle or piece of terrain and some of the figures from the mansion(which would be fine with me since I won't be able to get the mansion but would still love to get Gambit and Bishop) and at least one new figure like Nightcrawler or Jubilee. Hopefully Nightcrawler.

Ehh the sentinel from the 2014 set wasn’t bad, i just regret selling that xjet compared to the one we got recently. Just got the xmansion and love the different scales now but i agree the locked knees makes it weird

Colossus would be a better as a Minifig I feel.

Where is no Marvel Modular confirmed?

Nowhere. It just doesn’t make sense that they would release two super hero modulars in the same year. Arkham will probably be next year’s modular.

Ah its an assumption then, thanks. Is Arkham confirmed to be a modular? Only seen that Arkham is happening in passing

I just started building the Cerebro GWP set and I‘m stunned to see that the Jubilee screen is printed! *huh* It‘s not the first yellow-box GWP with an exclusive print (as the D&D one had a new eye print), but can’t say I expected it!

Another assumption, but it makes sense Lego would want to go the modular route with it. Making it connect to the other buildings adds appeal. But even if it’s not modular, Lego probably wouldn’t cannibalize their own sales by releasing two big superhero buildings in the same year.

To be fair we got the Shadow Box and Avengers Tower in the same year.

Shadowbox wasn’t really a playset so much as it was an unholy abomination. I don’t think it sold well either, seeing as it’s already retiring.

It should be worth noting Arkham is supposed to come out during the summer next year. If Marvel were to release another modular building of their own in November it shouldn't cannibalize the sales that much if the two sets have a six month gap between them. That's the same period of time that's separating Arkham's release date from the X-Mansion's.

What modular what Marvel have next? I'd like Thier next minifig compatible D2C to be something like Asgard instead of a modular.

Oscorp. The bugle's retiring, new spider-man characters are being seeded in, etc.

While this is absolutely true, assumably lego had SOME faith in it, and that's still two big superhero playset D2Cs in one year. I think Marvel could have a modular so long as it's not too similar to Arkham (especially assuming that Arkham itself probably wouldn't literally be a modular)
