AD_Bricks Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Flying lesson looks a bit bland, cool to see Oliver Wood again but he's nothing special, and WHAT is McGonagall doing without arm or dress printing... on top of no dual moulded hair/hat?? I'm glad I haven't invested anything into the new Hogwarts series... my favourite is still 2018-2020, but I like 2021-2023 too, mostly for the extra colour and the interiors. This one will probably be fabulous when completed but that's way beyond my budget and few of the sets look fantastic on their own. I might still get the Owlery at some point, but only because it's not a location that was already done for either of the other systems and doesn't properly connect to the new one anyway, so it should look nice next to my 2018-2020 ones. Honestly mostly underwhelming sets for HP this coming January imo, with the exception of Malfoy Manor which I'll have to find below retail price at some point.
BrickBob Studpants Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Regarding the last two reveals: Nothing too exciting here, but I still appreciate both sets! The exterior of the Flying Lesson looks neat while the interior leaves something to be desired. The minifigs are pretty unspectacular, as expected The Knight Bus looks good, even though I prefer the 2019 version. Where did the Dre Head go tho?
Legofan04 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 (edited) This is a very wave of sets to say the least. Definitely not the best, but then the first wave of sets for the year- since Harry Potter started doing two waves a year- has always been a tad underwhelming to what comes later in the year. As far as each individual set goes The Dueling club: The set itself looks pretty great. I love the look of the platform and how the main play feature allows you to push one way or the other to knock off the figure. It's cool that a fire place was included which was absent in this years Great hall. The figures are largely on point with the inclusions, the only notable exception being Justin Finch-Fletchley however am not complaining since its rare for lego to include 4 in a set of this size these days. As to Lockhart's cloak I do wish they had made a piece that goes over just one shoulder. If I recall correctly, that's how he wears it before casting it aside in the film. My only question is whether this is the $20 set?. I know $25 was originally rumored for this when pricing was still unclear. If it is $20 then this will be a day 1 purchase. Charms Classroom: Is it as good as Potions? No. To be fair though the potions classroom has a lot more visually going on in it in the film than the scene that this set is based off of. It contains everything it needs to which is honestly the problem. Focusing on one scene or set of related scenes per sets - as it seems this new system is attempting to do with the majority of the sets- can work but the scene should offer something important to the story or offer play. Although the Wingardium Leviosa scene is fun film wise, it doesn't translate well as a set idea outside the play feature to practice the spell (something I would have loved as a kid). I'm holding out judgement about how it'll look closed up and inserted in the Flying Lesson. When seeing the pictures of the potions classroom I didn't think would look good in the Great Hall but have been pleasantly surprised. Oh and the Flitfick is new. That's kind of cool but I wish they went all out for him like the McGonagall from the Boathouse or Dumbledore from the Great Hall. The two that don't interest me are the MotorCycle Ride and Microscale Diagon Alley. The Motorcycle doesn't look great (and more importantly that Harry face is going to give me nightmares). With Diagon Alley I'm just not interested in sets at that scale. I hope though that it's a blue print for what's going to be included in the play scale diagon alley system. There appears to be multiple stores that have yet been made ( not including the Leaky Cauldron which feels unlikely at this point). Malfoy Manner: I absolutely love the facade and the gate. The inside is to shallow for my liking but I've had that complaint with a lot of the Harry Potter locations that are not part of hogwarts (cough* Grimwald Place cough*). I do like the details on the inside though and am surprised by the inclusion of the conference table. It might be an unpopular opinion but the figures aren't as awful as they've been made out to be. Are there pivotol characters missing? Yeah, that's the problem of them trying to combine the two different scenes. Griphook, Olivander, or even Wormtail (who doesn't seem out of bounds given Dobby) would have been better choices then Voldermort. As to the printing, the plain legs don't look great but thats more of the fault of the costume designers as many of their outfits from the waist down don't have much going on in the way of detail. The only figure that feels truly cheapened out on ( outside of the horrible face reuses) is Beletrix and the use of generic robe leg piece. Her costume in the film had such pretty flowers on it so wish they were included. Flying Lesson: This set is more of a mixed bag to be sure. As others here of said the exterior looks great, especially when closed up but the interior leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the rooms aren't bad. You don't need much for the trophy room as Jame's trophy is the primary focal point. Likewise you don't see much of McGonagall's office in this particular scene. The storage room at the bottom is also fine for what it is. The biggest problem is the inclusion of the Transfiguration classroom. While it's inclusion makes sense given the office, it just doesn't work and is pitiful. I hope we get a more complete version later on. The figures are what they are but what's up with McGonagall? Why has she received such a downgrade? I've looked over reference photos and rewatched the scene. She wears the exact same outfit as she does upon the students' arrival as far as I can tell. The only thing that would make sense is if they wanted to keep the better figure exclusive the the boathouse. If that's the case though, than it would have been better on waiting to make the set until the retirement of the boathouse to put more distance between the two. It would have worked out better given its lack of direct connection to the great hall. Also isn't the entire castle on a rocky surface? It seems that this set should be placed on top of a sublevel so the trophy room isn't on the same level as the bathroom with the troll. Wasn't for the classroom and one figure this would be a 10/10 set especially for the price which feels reasonable given what's included ( another rarity with lego these days) Knight Bus: I agree with Clone OPatra that looks very rectangular. It might be the more accurate windows? I don't know need a better look. Overall this wave is really solid with a lot of great ideas, even if execution isn't perfect Edited December 2, 2024 by Legofan04 Didn't mean to submit
lego_guyon02 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 I really love the exterior of the Flying Lesson set and how it folds off, great stuff. The interior on the other hand is so barebones it's actually kinda ridiculous and the figure selection is... well I guess it has figures? At this point these bigger Hogwarts sets might as well just put an "interiors sold separately" disclaimer on the box because this ain't it lol. The Knight Bus doesn't really interest me as I have the 2019 version and am perfectly happy with that one but I guess this new one is fine, it does some things better and other things worse. The figures aren't anything to write home about but I do really love that new Daily Prophet print. Really wish they had included Marge here so the rumored Privet Drive remake could be based on OotP or DH but alas. Overall the january wave might honestly be the weakest Potter wave to date for me. There are some solid ideas here but the execution and figures are so underwhelming that even the gimmicky Moments and Banner waves (which really weren't my cup of tea) had more to offer. There's honestly not a single new figure here that I would consider to be genuinely great

The Entertainer has 160 stores and you could write off the impact on the line from them - but 850 is a sizeable number in terms of volume and reach. It’s shocking that Tesco has handed over their toy aisle to people whose views are fairly extreme.

If I buy a set, I want to display all of it—I don't want to hide parts of it in my shelves just because the designers didn't think of a way to make all of it displayable.
Jaromir Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Any ideas, where flying lesson is connecting to? Hopefully this folding part is not a bridge that connects to Great Hall frontyard and creates that big bridge. Do you think it will be placed at the back fo whole structure?

Perhaps it's dumb from the view of display but for those theses sets are targeted to it will be fun for play. Besides this system just started so it's too early to say that they didn't think of a way to make all of it displayable. Why not just wait and see the full scope of what Lego is planning before jumping to a conclusion. You might end up being right but just as likely you might be wrong. The last Hogwarts system was largely hated until the release of the Final battle where people were able to see the vision of what lego was going for in its entirety. It still wasn't great but it was better than the impressions given when they released individually.
Tariq j Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 6 hours ago, Huigberts Builds said: But both transfiguration and Charms really aren't that. Charms is even closed when displayed, I mean so was Potions, but at least there it made somewhat sense, here the arches will look awful if it has this huge brick of a class stored inside. The rooms feel more like storage containers than actual display pieces. Yeah, I assumed that the Potions classroom was a one-off thing but it seems the approach (at least for the classrooms) is to have them slide into the shell of the castle. I would much rather have the classrooms built into the castle rather than the castle being used as a container for the classrooms. The Knight Bus looks good, I like the addition of Padfoot and the Sleeping Witch but it does look as though we’ve lost the shrunken head. Stan Shunpike’s cap also seems to be the one they used in the older sets as oppose to the newer one they used in the 2019 version. The whole set weirdly sort of feels like an upgrade and a downgrade at the same time.
Virginia_Bricks Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 My thoughts: We have three clips in this set. Two on the smaller tower and one behind the larger tower. Personally this feels like the chance to expand beyond the silhouette of the microscale Hogwarts is possible. Otherwise Lego is really butchering the layout or either the DADA tower or Viaduct entrance. For a lot of fans here that should be very exciting. The McGonagall figure choice is odd since the dueling club uses the better Snape. Only the head is a better representation since he does not wear her hat during this scene. Otherwise the figures are as expected with Oliver Wood as a nice surprise inclusion. The choice to do small interiors with the main component sets is clearly intentional and I like it. It keeps these sets a tad bit cheaper and gives younger fans the chance to get a set without a large price point. At the end there will be a lot of leftover modules, but it is a perfect chance to use the parts to MOC up parts of the castle they didn't include or beef up parts they did. The alternative is just less sets in this wave. We won't be getting a transfiguration classroom it seems, which overall isn't bad as that classroom is overall boring compared to other options. We definitely will get DADA, but this makes me feel like we have a chance at Divination and Herbology. 2 hours ago, BrickMatit said: Some days ago a leaker on Instagram showed an image of Marge Dursley enflated - from PoA movie- hinting to a future LEGO set. That would be complete out of place, I believe flying lesson will represent Training Grounds tower so it should connect to a set like Transfiguration/Middle Courtyard. Not sure if we will get one but it should be a central part of that side of the castle to which places like Defense/Astronomy (depending on which movies they choose to represent) tower, Long Gallery (with Central tower), Bell towers connect to. At first I though Owlery set would be in that place but they ended up making a set from movies where Owlery is stand alone tower further away.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for modular systems where you can buy different sets and connect them, but the sets themselves ought to be able to stand alone, and these days they can't. I also don't get who exactly the new modular system is meant for. Yes, it allows more space for play than the previous one, but it's also ridiculously expensive. I don't know many kids with that kind of budget even for large gifts! And it's such a weird mixture of display and storage, like, why do the slide-in modules have to be enclosed, why can't they have a plate at the bottom and an open wall so they at least have some display value as well?

The closest I could see her to this outfit is when she crosses the front of her robe over herself more when leaving the troll bathroom scene, but then she's wearing her hat and she still would still benefit from arm and skirt printing. So that being said all I can think is that like you say they want to keep that McGonagall exclusive to the Boathouse and / or cut costs by putting one new printed torso in this set with her robe closing at the waist so they don't have to put in the printed skirt. I'm hoping the summer wave has got the budget for figures which is why this January wave is using endless student repeats and seems to be cutting corners elsewhere.

As for the fire place, if it was in the original great hall you would not have had space for two rows of tables. But with the dueling club it will fit. And the new wave is clearly mixing AFOL desires with playsets for kids desires. Feels very similar to Star Wars which releases $150-200 playsets regularly that a kid can save up allowance for and an AFOL would enjoy having

This is something I think too; I usually prefer to expose my Hogwarts showing the exterior part, so this is not a big problem for me, but without modifyes there's no sense as for display purpose as for play purpose in putting in the castle both Charms and Potions class (even if the latter has at least an open arch looking inside). In the end, imagining a lot of other classroom made in this way, one would have a wall full of doors.
brickbride Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 (edited) Since we now have pics of the interiors of the microscale Diagon Alley set (which are nothing to write home about, seriously, they don't look great), I've tried to identify the previously unidentified shops. I could use some help, though. So far we've had: left side - Leaky Cauldron with the Knight Bus parked in front. EDIT: @Accio Legohas identified the white "Z-Blob" piece upstairs as Hedwig, honestly I would have taken it for a table lamp. ;-) - Magical Menagerie with the oversized kitten sign. The interior includes a pink frog which, given the scale, ought to be some giant mutated killer frog. (The scale seems to be to be way off with many of the interiors in general.) - Madam Malkin's (not really recognisable as far as the interior goes, either) - QQS (Quidditch colours and a golden trophy statuette that could be a mannequin, I guess. Though it's golden which is an odd choice.) - small blue unidentified building, possibly Wiseacre's? Your guess is as good as mine. I cannot identify the interior either. It has a decorative gray owl outside. EDIT: Identified by @Black Falconand @Accio Legoas Eeyelops, with the "Z-Blob" pieces representing owls. - two buildings with medium pink and dark pink downstairs fronts and surprisingly identical upstairs rooms; I think the medium pink one is Sugarplum's and the darker one is the Fountain of Fair Fortune, but that's mostly based off Wizarding World Orlando street view pictures I found online. The unicorn horn could represent a fountain of some kind, I guess, and the flower pieces could be taps, and the tiles on the other side of the wall could be shelves full of candies, but again that's just guesswork. - unidentified dark green building with a jewel displayed upstairs, no idea. The shop sign is a yellow 1x2 plate. EDIT: identified by @mark1991t as Borgin and Burke's. middle: Gringotts (the only one whose interior looks decent, in my opinion. Though I'm no fan of the straight columns on the exterior) right side: - tall building that I suspect is the Owl Post Office, with some sort of kiosk next to it. I couldn't find interior pictures. EDIT: Found one (see below, on the lower left), though I still cannot make much out. What's the white statuette representing? - Scribbulus - Ollivander's - another unidentified blue building that could be Wiseacre's I guess. Interior pictures include a golden spigot downstairs and a water-coloured jewel upstairs. Wiseacre's sells telescopes if I remember correctly, so maybe that's what the spigot's supposed to represent? EDIT: Confirmed by @mark1991tto be Wiseacre's. - Fortescue's - Flourish and Blotts - entrance to Knockturn Alley - WWW The last four are all pretty unrecognisable, too. (EDIT: Ollivander's looks more like a bookshop than the bookshop does.) I have no idea what the green jewel in the bookshop represents. WWW has the colourful stairs and what I guess could be like a galleon-sized bottle of love potions (with the heart stopper) if you don't mind the fact that the stopper is at least the height of the bottle. Outside WWW is what @Accio Legohas identified as a phone booth. Though if that's supposed to fit a human, again, the heart-stoppered potion is nearly the same size! Any guesses as to the remaining shops? - Edited December 3, 2024 by brickbride

Huigberts Builds Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 (edited) For Diagon Alley the nanofigures appear to be Hermione, Ron, Lavender, Ginny, Fred, George, Mr Borgin, Narcissa, Draco, Madam Malkin, Ollivander and Harry. They somehow put more effort in nano Narcissa than the regular version xD. The lineup is pretty decent, although I was kinda hoping they would find a way to do a tiny Hagrid. Also Borgin feels slightly out of place without his actual shop, then again, at first I mistook him for Tom, he can probably easily double for that. Goblins are also noticeably absent, although I don't know how they could've done them either so that's understandable. Edited December 2, 2024 by Huigberts Builds
