Also, when I saw the offical write up: "It features a Lucius Malfoy minifigure and a brick-built interior section of Borgin & Burkes." Hopefully the colon in the set name is an indication that we will see another, more realized set for Borgin and Burkes, complete with an exterior facade and an interior with a vanishing cabinet, that this one can attach to.
Micmac Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 I got the new Harry Potter Advent calendar today. Its appeal is that it ends up being a really nice playset of the Great Hall when fully built and placed on the printed scene on the box. It's a bit repetitive though, five table builds, four statues, two Christmas trees. The crackers are the size of the kids and they can't even hold them to pull them. The snake and bird statue are ok looking but the lion and badger are ugly. And two printed portraits in it (the same ones in my box), I think I would have preferred some original printed parts instead. Not my favourite but I like that it's one location and everything is part of the scene with no micro builds except for the train under the tree. The ghost figure is great though and Dumbledore's robe is bright red giving him a Santa look.
Accio Lego Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 4 hours ago, Micmac said: And two printed portraits in it (the same ones in my box), I think I would have preferred some original printed parts instead. I don’t think there was an ‘instead’ option here. The 2021 advent calendar included 2 chocolate frog cards and featured new prints for the Privet Drive sign, Harry’s Birthday Cake, Leaky Cauldron sign, Platform 9 3/4 sign, train ticket, and spinner top. The difference is that that calendar also only had 2 new torsos and 1 new head among 6 characters. In contrast, this year’s calendar has 7 new torsos, 2 new skirts, and a new head – so I can kind of see why there wasn’t any budget left for new tile prints this year. Things like the house emblem tiles, sheet music, and collectible portraits are nice in that sense in that they add detail and richness without increasing the budget as much as a new print.
BrickBob Studpants Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 (edited) Unsurprisingly, HP is once again named in the „popular themes“ segment in the 1HY financial report Had you told me in 2011 that the theme would ever return, let alone with this success and longevity, I would have declared you nuttier than squirrel poo. mark1991t Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 This 'documentary' was very interesting to watch: I always knew Bionicle saved LEGO, but I didn't know that Harry Potter was the 2nd best selling theme back then, even before Star Wars.

Interesting, and the Harry Potter theme has also kicked off some lego elements that are now staples. Quirrel in the first wave (followed shortly by the polyjuiced Harry and Ron in 2002) was the first ever minifigure with a double sided head, and now a minifig having an alternate expression is basically considered a must. Then in 2002 Dobby and the Gringotts Goblins debuted alongside Yoda as the first minifigs with short legs if I remember correctly. In other words, minifigures wouldn’t have the features they do now if it weren’t for this theme. (Come to think of it, didn’t the reboot coincide with the introduction of the designated skirt piece? I think it existed before, but I know Harry Potter series 1 was the first time it appeared in a CMF)

Because skir tpieces like that did exist in CMF before too. In both the Simpsons-series Marge is wearing one.

No, he means the robe piece that replaced the sloped brick they had used for decades before It was introduced that year, but first appeared in the Jedi & Clone Trooper battlepack and two of the Solo sets.

Coryo Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 Does anyone know why Lego went with bright yellow for the Malfoys' hairpieces instead of the tan colour they used to have?
Bricknificent Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 On LEGO shop Australia you can redeem 1600 points for 4 Harry Potter themed prints. Also, on some selected hp sets you can get 2x insider points. Please note these 'promotions' may possibly vary per country.

joeee Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 I am attempting to get the Borgin and Burkes GWP with the sets in my "Maybe" tier...and I cannot bite. Buying Hogwarts Grounds does not justify the GWP for me. Especially since this set seems more in line with the non-D2C Diagon Alley. Is anyone else also on the fence about buying sets for the GWP?

I went ahead & got the Burrow. Cashed in enough points to get $150 off. I purposely didn't buy most sets this year waiting for the GWP. Still trying to decide if I want to place another order for something else on my wishlist to get the 2x insider points or wait for the inevitable price reductions or whatever sets Costco might get in this year. I'm a bit bummed now that I went & bought the Potions Class week before last to reach the spend threshold for the Pegasus GWP. Had I waited until today I could have gotten the 2x points on it. Guess I should have gone with one of the City Jungle sets for that previous purchase.
BacktoBricks Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 So Tiago Catarino states in his review that The Burrow is a perfectly good set, but he's not sure if the house warrants the big D2C set in that it's not an iconic a location as the castle or Hogwarts Express etc. And I do get his point. That being said, if Lego are going to continue to produce a D2C every year then I think the Weasley's house was a perfectly acceptable choice. The only house from the series that I would consider more iconic than The Burrow would be Privet Drive, and considering this year's D2C I would bet the Dursley's house would get the same detailed treatment should the line continue. So theory: Lego released the Ford Anglia earlier this year and it makes a perfect cheap play set for children, but also pairs well for people displaying The Burrow, so does the rumored upcoming Hagrid's Motorcycle set foreshadow a D2C Dursley's later next year? Other than a Quidditch Pitch, I can't think of anything else that would warrant the D2C treatment right now if they don't do vehicles and after the 'supposedly' poor sales of the Hogwarts Express I can see them having shelved that rumored detailed Night Bus. I can see them wanting to increase shelf variety next year and go with a location such as Quidditch first rather than another building, but it's just a thought.

Even the most casual fan will instantly recognise it It’s like questioning the existence of the UCS TIE Interceptor because it’s not quite as iconic as the regular TIE Fighter. 1 hour ago, BacktoBricks said: The only house from the series that I would consider more iconic than The Burrow would be Privet Drive […] Really? Privet Drive 4 is the most ordinary and boring-looking house imaginable, and by design. It being unremarkable in every way is the entire point I wouldn’t be against a D2C set, but I wouldn’t call it iconic. It’s supposed to be the exact opposite of that. (Granted, that style of terraced house is pretty iconic in real life as it’s typical for the British Isles and not really seen elsewhere, but you know what I mean) 1 hour ago, BacktoBricks said: I can see them wanting to increase shelf variety next year and go with a location such as Quidditch first rather than another building, but it's just a thought. Or take a break again, like in 2019. We don’t really need a big D2C set every single year HP is not like SW where the options are virtually unlimited. With HP, they will run out of options at some point unless they start to remake D2C sets, so I’d rather they slow down a tiny bit

With HP, they will run out of options at some point unless they start to remake D2C sets, so I’d rather they slow down a tiny bit Sure The Burrow is iconic and different and distinctive enough to be a cool set. Myself I'm perfectly happy with the D2C Burrow existing, but I think Tiago's point is more, do we really need everything to be done in this detail? If you think Harry Potter, I think most would agree the most iconic location would be the Hogwarts Castle. If there had to be just one Harry Potter D2C set, The Burrow wouldn't be it. And yes, that argument could extend to other themes. As for Privet Drive, tourists make a point of visiting the house that was used and taking photos etc just like they visit Kings Cross and take photos pretending to go through (or crash into) the wall. The owners of the house are well used to tourists by all accounts and know it comes with the territory. Boring it may be, but stick a Privet Drive sign out front and plonk a couple of owls on it and I think a huge majority of people would recognize it. It's where the story starts, it's 'Harry's' house, the home of the cupboard under the stairs and the place where Vernon goes mad and boards everything up etc. That whole scenario is pretty famous and popular even if the house itself might be ordinary. They could easily run out of concepts for big D2Cs with the Harry Potter material sure, but somehow I don't think they're going to take a break. I think they have a taste for the big sets now. I'm guessing 2019 was just them being cautious, but you said yourself HP is on the bestseller list now. I could even see them doing a D2C Grimmauld Place at this rate.
BrickMatit Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 1 hour ago, BacktoBricks said: I think they have a taste for the big sets now. They have a taste for money just a consideration, not a critic: LEGO is an enterprise and follows that logic. There's a market for big, deatiled, visually appealing set into very adult black box (sarcasm, I hate black box): people who wish to spend some more money per set for a single iconic set than collect a long series of smaller set (there's also people who buy both, of course). LEGO will probably continue producing them.

Would actually say it is more Iconic than the Hogwarts Express 2 hours ago, BacktoBricks said: Sure The Burrow is iconic and different and distinctive enough to be a cool set. And yes, that argument could extend to other themes. Well the Hogwarts Castle is the first Big HP-Set we got, and yeah it is for sure the most Iconic Location. And I got it myself, but in the end if we connect all the playsets of each wave we basically got a big D2C-Size Set. So that beeing said, I am not sure if I would agree that the Castle would have to be the choice if they would make a single one only. It certainly isn´t an unlikely choice, sure but if I had to choose I would choose Diagon Alley over it. As for if we need to be everything done in detail. The answer would probably be no. And yes. And well, maybe. Since everyone would like to have another location in a better size where they can add more Details. Some don´t need to Burrow since they got the old one, others are happy about it. In the end I would say it doesn´t hurt anyone if they over it, since noone needs to buy every of the sets and can choose what they like the most. 2 hours ago, BacktoBricks said: As for Privet Drive, tourists make a point of visiting the house that was used and taking photos etc just like they visit Kings Cross and take photos pretending to go through (or crash into) the wall. Sure the Location itself is iconic and got a lot screentime as it was present in most of the films. But as a Set I think that the Burrow is the way more iconic building since it has a very unique look. And a bigger version of the burrow benefits greatly from more room to display stuff, while with the Privet drive, I am not sure what the benefit would be from a big D2C version, compared to a 100€ Playset. Everything you would want to fit into it would fit into the Set IMO. And it would probably look pretty much out of scale compared to all other sets. Well aside from the Hogwarts Express maybe. 2 hours ago, BacktoBricks said: They could easily run out of concepts for big D2Cs with the Harry Potter material sure, but somehow I don't think they're going to take a break. There is plenty of stuff they could do as a D2C set and at some point they will just start redoing sets they already made, so I certainly don´t see them running out of ideas.
MaxHeadroom Posted September 1, 2024 Posted September 1, 2024 Did the US store have double points? I didn’t see anything about it. Ordered the Burrow and the Durmstrang Ship sets. Both separate so double the GWPs which will be nice.
