Minidoll set based off the original film... does this mean that if the minifig set were released at a future date, it will be based off a remake of some sort? Clamshell all over again?

I meant more that there was rumor it would be based on the Lego Disney Princess special aired on Disney Plus. Dragon Maleficent shows up with Gaston and fighting Tiana and Ariel so it was unsure if it would be off of Sleeping Beauty or the Special.

One year of excitement over the dragon and then this anti-climax.

The set could still be released next year as the concepts are too dissimilar to be the same set :classic: I highly doubt they turned an 18+ diorama set with a brickbuilt Maleficent dragon and minifigs into a 6+ minidoll playset with a dragon with moulded pieces

Hope you are right. Was Lego afraid that the red dragon from D&D will face off with Maleficent's dragon form?

This is very disappointing especially after how well done the Snow White set was.

If they later on release a minifigure version of the set as a diorama, that could at least differentiate it from the playscale minidoll version. Something like the Peter Pan set, since we haven't gotten any more sets in that vein.

What could possibly be holding Lego back from releasing this set this year? I hypothesized about the D&D dragon. Is it just that?

I feel like Lego should pick three or four classic fairytales/ movies for each year to feature as a minifig set based on a vignette/ location. This year, they did Peter Pan, Snow White, and Little Mermaid (albeit not the classic version).

Beauty and the Beast is long long long time overdue.

It's the 65th anniversary for the movie as well this year so you would think they'd prioritize a set that would actually honor the original film rather than a minidoll set they can release anytime as part of the DP theme. The dragon thing sounds like the only plausible explanation that it might clash with D&D. Like how Gringotts was spaced out the year before D&D since that also has a dragon.

I know people were hoping for another Peter Pan style set, themed to BATB, but I have a feeling it was that Pan was a one-off like the train set with the parade floats. That also had people speculate we would get similar sets with more parade floats themed to different movies. Honestly, I'd be surprised if either set sold well enough to warrant more. The Pan set especially was way too overpriced. The lack of Michael and John, the most generic Nana, the scaled down versions of Peter Pan and Tinker Bell which you can get in a much cheaper set, and Wendy not even getting her hairbow, were all enough reasons to avoid this set.

I wonder if the sales numbers of the clamshell and Disney Castle are a contributing factor as well. I can see Lego looking at the two biggest Disney Princess centric sets last year not doing well as a sign that Disney Princess only sells if they are minidolls and chose to swap an Aurora and Philip minifigure for minidolls as a result. Snow White might have been too far into production (with the new Dwarf beard molds) to change but I haven't looked into the cottage sales to know if its enough to make Lego second guess themselves.

Highly doubt it. The design work on the Maleficent minidoll set started roughly a year ago, by which point the Castle wasn‘t even launched and the clamshell had just hit shelves. They can‘t completely overhaul a set this spontaneously and with no real sales data to work with. Besides, the success of any given set (or most toys for that matter) can only really be assessed after Xmas, given how many of them end up under a tree

I think we’ll know next year if there’s new minifigure sets how well the sets sold. Sets usually have a two year development?

I do wonder if ANY of the sets from last year are selling well, mini doll ones included as they all seem to be on sale more regularly than other themes and not have very long shelf spans. I hope they sold well because I would like Disney sets both mini doll and minifigure for many years to come.

New set photos out. The dragon does look nice although I feel like LEGO at this point should invest in a new color for those ball joints instead of just the grey. They use them so often that a black, light nouget, or brown might have given them some return on investment by now.

I don't really like the Simba. His face seems too scrunched up.

Is Baby Sven from the Frozen castle new? Don't think I've seen that piece before.

The Maleficent dragon is okay. A little on the smaller side but doesn't look bad. I was worried it would be rather cartoony and not fit alongside the minifigure Disney sets. I'm very curious of its scale next to the castle or another dragon like the Gringotts one. Phillip's shield is nice as well.

But looking at the Ninjago $150 dragon set makes me wish we got something like that. That Ninjago dragon is absolutely glorious and huge in scale. We're getting so many dragons these past few months that I wonder if Maleficent was downgraded to a small minidoll set for this reason. She deserved much more.

Also looking at the Friends sets, there's a superb Bed and Breakfast set which almost looks like a minicastle that would fit well with the Disney theme.

Simba looked much better in the preliminary concept images wow. I love Ariels hair wish it was released on pick a brick. Is the new Little Mermaid set based off some cartoon? Ursula and Ariel look different to anything I've ever seen. Everything is an easy pass. Which sucks because I wish we saw a new Brave set get released.

That’s because there are two buildable Simba sets. The other will be much larger

Is this confirmed? Wow 2 of the same set in 1 year sounds ridiculous. But I guess I’ll be buying the larger one if this is true lol

Yes. The big one is set 43247 with 1445 pieces, priced at $129.99 and also releasing June 1st. Not sure if it's a D2C set (explaining why we haven't seen it yet), but it's 18+ :classic:

I would have preferred Aurora in the blue version of her gown for the mini Disneyland castle set.

She used to wear exclusively blue at Disneyland Paris.

Sad that the Mary Poppins Ideas set was rejected (although I was not fond of sequel characters being included) but glad that the riverboat made it. With dragon Maleficent, we can recreate Fantasmic and fill the riverboat with Disney characters.

I’m guessing they’re saving that for another CMF line, the eventual D2C Sleeping Beaut Castle, or (I really hope) a Sleeping Beauty Cottage set!! My hope is the latter, with the introduction of Merryweather, Flora, and Fauna, the cottage can have the blue dress, and the cake build! And the castle can have baby Aurora, the King and Queen, some guards, Maleficent and the spindle of course. As for a CMF series, I would personally love to see Ariels teal dress to pop up, should they ever want variants of the princess’s to appear. I say that cause her white and pink dress could be included in sets for the bot and castle respectively, should they ever be made in mini figure form. And obviously we still need to get Raya and Merida as figures in a CMF series. What’s fun about these princesses is that there’s so many ways to produce their variants.

Am I the only one who finds the Snow White jewelry box absolutely hilarious? :laugh_hard: Considering what kind of „jewelry“ was supposed to go into that box in the movie :snicker:

I wholeheartedly agree.

I just noticed something really interesting in the Dragon Maleficent set; there’s a stand with armour for Prince John inside the castle, with what looks like a new golden shoulder armour piece designed to fit minidolls? Does that exist elsewhere? It seems like such a random thing to just toss in like that but I’m totally up for it.

I just saw the buildable Simba set. He is so cute but doesn’t appeal to me at all. I wih there would be a Lion King set that molded animal for Simba, Timon, etc…
