Haven’t seen a single DC movie outside of TLBM and Shazam!, simply because I have no clue what’s good or what’s important to watch. (Plus I’m more of a Disney+ guy, given it has both Marvel and Star Wars, so none of the films cross my radar generally.) The announcement of Superman as the forerunner of the DCU finally gave me something for which to look forward. The creative team feels strong, the cast looks great, the tone feels right; if John Williams was announced to be composing the score, I wouldn’t be all too surprised. The only thing that could dampen my excitement would be no tie-in products from the LEGO Group. Had something different written up until I rewatched Ep. 4-6 over the weekend with your words ringing in my ear. (It’s a medical condition, don’t worry.) I’ll agree—especially in ANH, where Vader seems much more noble than he is often depicted, while Tarkin is the one who suggests they execute Leia—until Vader suggests they keep her as bait. Still, did Antilles really know where the plans were exactly? This gets into semantics, but going off just ANH, I think he can only assume Leia still has the plans on her. Anything else is interpolation. (I’ll concede my previous point that Vader actively killed Rebels on the battlefield in the OT, but I chalk that up to the limits of SFX.) I’ll concede on Ozzel, but why make an example of Needa? cosmic Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Everyone seems so obsessed with the lack of reason in giving Superman the mech over Lex, but no one seems to be mentioning how amazing the leg print is on Luthor. I can't seem to pin point where the Superman is based from, but the belt is interesting. It's different, for sure. But I have no idea where they pulled this design from. As for the Tumbler, very disappointed they didn't include the ejectable Bat Trike. I had hope we'd finally get it. I mean, Ninjago has given Kai's car an ejectable motorcycle before, so why couldn't they do the same for Batman? i was expecting more, for some reason, lol. As for Two Face, despite being one of the stand out figures of the wave, he's also got a new hair piece that seems perfect for Metallo. Seriously, I can see myself using this hair for custom Metallo figures, down to the color this piece works wonderfully for him. Truly an exciting wave (the bar is in hell). Quote

Wouldn’t there be word of Imperial sieges of Alderaan if that were the case? Wouldn’t Alderaan have a big Rebel tattoo on their planet? Maybe a huge neon sign saying “Hey! Over here!”? People know of the Rebellion, but only until Leia mentions Alderaan do Luke and Old Ben associate the two in the same breath. Tarkin only chooses Alderaan because of Leia’s connection. Alderaan isn’t a military target, Tarkin says. He only destroys it to make a demonstration, an effective one at that: if you’re even remotely related to the Rebels, no matter how peaceful you are, you too may be subjected to absolute annihilation. The Empire doesn’t tolerate any Rebel sympathy. Frankly, to make Alderaan an enemy system lessens the core, despicable nature of the Empire, and deconstructs the reason they must be overthrown. (I’m starting to get into storytelling reasons here, and less so space-political motives.) 6 hours ago, Max_Lego said: Leia may be the adopted daughter of the king of Alderaan and a member of the Senate and Imperial diplomat at the same time; she's a spy sent by her adoptive father to sabotage Imperial bureaucracy from the inside, that's why Vader calls her a traitor. You can’t represent something in a government if that something isn’t part of that government. If Leia was representing something else, that information would’ve been presented in the film. Yes, I’m assuming the Empire controls every planet, meanwhile the opening crawl reads “It is a period of civil war.” Why then isn’t the other government called out by name? Rebellion doesn’t sound like a separate government, does it? In my oh-so-humble opinion, the civil war is referring to the Rebel cause spreading, and planets rising against the Empire one by one. (“The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.” It’s more of a revolution, but viewed as a civil war because the Rebellion fights to restore the Republic. That latter half isn’t in the OT directly, I’ll admit. 6 hours ago, Max_Lego said: Vader was questioning someone who might have known the location of the plans (btw, many people ask why he didn't Force choke Antilles; he didn't CHOKE him, he only lifted him to frighten the guy, got mad and snapped his neck accidentally - his bad). Why wouldn’t he choke a Rebel if he would choke one of his fellow Imperials? After all, the last time someone spoke to Vader over hologram about his failure, that guy got choked out. I believe Needa felt that perhaps a personal touch was in order. Obviously, he did waste time, and Vader didn’t appreciate it, but I feel some grace could’ve been extended. Oh, you’re one of those types, lol. I’m cool with it. I’m not the gatekeeping type, and I understand why you believe that way. I agree in a lot of respects. For me, when I view Star Wars, I consider George’s complete vision to be utmost canon, thus I deem the Complete Saga (1-6) in whole to be important above all others. (TCW is supplemental, neither taking away from or adding to the films in my view.) The Prequels definitely were affected by Marcia and his divorce, so they weren’t the purest form from 1977, but they still remain part of his vision. Reading the Star Wars Ring Theory helped me appreciate the Prequels beyond just a collection of so-so films. I hate that Obi-Wan now flat-out lies to Luke in RotJ about first meeting Anakin, but I’m honestly not impressed with Ben as a character by that point anyway. If George wants me to understand the films that way, I personally am willing to see it through his perspective. (Not necessarily through the lens of the Prequels, but to see how the two compare and contrast to better understand the Star Wars.) I’m also willing to see it through the perspective of just the OT, though, because they are a complete trilogy of awe inspiring, groundbreaking films. In the end, I’m given a whole new appreciation for three beloved films of mine. :) Well, our tactic isn’t working. Nobody from the Star Wars thread has migrated over to debate, and I believe the Rancor has implied that the 2025 thread won’t start until January. Oh well, it was worth a shot. If Alderaan was part of the Empire, it would've been ruled by an Imperial governor, who would've successfully resolved the tensions with the planetary government one way or another. Sending a diplomatic mission to a system you control (you don't) makes not much sense - such missions are sent to external allies (like Corellia), neutral planets (like Tatooine - yes, Tatooone is by no means in the Empire!) or enemies (to resolve tension) - out of the three Alderaan is clearly the latter. Yes, it wasn't a military target - yet it doesn't mean it didn't have a military of its own: an Alderaanian military base would've qualified as a military target, but the entire planet didn't. By the way, why does everyone believe that Tarkin wanted to destroy the entire moon of Yavin? He obviously only wanted to blow up the Rebel base on the surface. 1 hour ago, Swordy said: In my oh-so-humble opinion, the civil war is referring to the Rebel cause spreading, and planets rising against the Empire one by one. Well, it's simple—any movie Cavill was in sucked, while The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker were the best-reviewed projects of the DCEU. James Gunn is planning the universe, so it makes sense to keep the stuff he already started building in the past. It would be a shame to abandon Peacemaker just because of a change in the management. Also, it's literally the same thing MCU is doing now with the Netflix series—retroactively adding them to the canon, even though they didn't acknowledge them for a decade. More than half of your obvious choices are getting something. Superman is getting a movie. Batman is getting a movie. Green Lantern is getting a show. Wonder Woman is getting a prequel show. Flash just had a movie that bombed, so it’s not all that surprising he’s not here (though there’s also been rumors he’s getting a show). Not to mention we’re getting a movie for Supergirl, who the general audience is well familiar with. Then you’ve got Amanda Waller and Peacemaker who most people will be aware of thanks to the Suicide Squad movies. Booster Gold and Swamp Thing aren’t household names, but they’re fairly well known among comic book fans. Of the eleven projects announced, the only ones to feature obscure characters nobody knows about are Creature Commandos (a direct tie-in to The Suicide Squad) and The Authority (which looks like it’ll tie into Superman). Also, let’s not pretend the MCU didn’t start off with a bunch of obscure characters. And yet they were a huge success. Meanwhile the DCEU started off with a Superman movie, a Batman/Superman movie, a Suicide Squad that had Joker plastered all over the marketing, a Wonder Woman movie and a Justice League movie, and their whole franchise was a disaster from the start. So clearly there’s more to building a cinematic universe than just throwing characters people recognize up on the screen. Edited December 2, 2024 by psqidexslizer Quote

He might not delay anything, because James Gunn doesn't set the release dates—he's a creative manager of DC Studios, while Safran is the financial one. Not to mention that The Batman Part II has been delayed by a year many months ago, which had nothing to do with Superman. He also won't push Battinson into the DCU. How did you come up with so many ridiculous conspiracy theories all at once? Quote

How did you come up with so many ridiculous conspiracy theories all at once? We've been lied to before, Superman hasn't come out yet and you're making Gunn out to be this saving grace for DC, we don't know what goes on behind closed doors I hope Superman does well and that Gunn will save DC but I don't think it's wrong to be concerned about a possibility Henry said he was returning and then he wasn't, things just change like that, you can't believe everything 1 hour ago, psqidexslizer said: What a bizarre complaint. I meant that besides Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman should get a movie, not a prequel show, I just think it's odd to start it with Creature Commandos,Waller and Peacemaker, that'd be like starting the MCU with Morbius,Agatha,Echo and El Muerto Quote

The only reason Waller, Creature Commandos, and Peacemaker are happening this early in the slate is they were already in production before the reboot. But also, I really don’t see any issue if they were starting with just those three. The recognizability of the character is less important than the quality going into the project. And seeing as how James Gunn helmed the highly popular GotG series and helped shape phase 3 of the MCU, arguably their best and most popular phase. And seeing as how he managed to turn out a critically acclaimed movie and a successful streaming series for DC, I think they’re in good hands. Certainly better than the hands they’ve been in since Nolan left. As far as Wonder Woman is concerned, she just had two movies and the actress was still rather liked in the role. It’s better to get some distance and a Wonder Woman prequel show is a good way to set her up while giving themselves some distance. Quote

As we all know fascist dictatorships are very reasonable and never use collective punishment. I'm confused at this debate, yes the empire did many bad things, yes these things weren't always the most tactically sound decisions, that is true of most fascist states, it doesn't come from logic, it comes from fear and hate. Sadly the dictatorship run by the guy who's entire belief system is based on volatile emotions, that is an allegory for real states that were very much the same was making choices that weren't, in fact, the best choices for all involved. I get what you mean but, you gotta look at it from the view of WB, it's all about money, viewership and sales is a big factor, you need something that will get the attention of many to make a good profit, right now, Superman is the last hope for DC, if that succeeds, the DCU will, If it fails then say goodbye to everyone besides Batman (Which I wouldn't be sad about, I love Batman but it would be a shame) If Superman fails then Gunn will be given the boot by Zaslav and maybe Zack will be brought back or Matt Reeves will be Plan B I worry that Superman will make only 500M$, and that will be considered a failure to WB, The DC fandom is split and the casual audience is getting sick of Superhero films, we'll get a Deadpool and Wolverine type hit now and again but I think the connected universe type stuff is coming to an end like Westerns did, it remains to be seen what the next trend will be if Superheroes dies out But I don't fully believe in Superhero fatigue, I think it's just bad writing/character assassination fatigue I think only Spider-Man 4,Fantastic 4, Doomsday,Secret Wars and The Batman 2 will be the last hits of the genre A few years ago it seemed like Marvel would never fail but now, it has become a reality, I feel like DC might become the new MCU type success and take the crown from MCU if Superman succeeds big But hey, superhero films are in a much better spot than Star Wars, that brand is a dead body being poked with a stick Would be nice to see DC win for once besides Batman, I'd love something like the JL animated series or New 52 animated movies Quote

The first thing about true fascist regimes is the cold rationality of the crimes and atrocities they commit. The Nazi death camp system was well designed to benefit Krupp, Messerschmitt, Porsche and other rich people of Germany, for example. Stupid irrational atrocities that make absolutely zero sense and are not quite possible IRL remind me of something else... 1 hour ago, Renny The Spaceman said: Sadly the dictatorship run by the guy who's entire belief system is based on volatile emotions, that is an allegory for real states that were very much the same was making choices that weren't, in fact, the best choices for all involved. We have a different understanding of how the Dark Side works. I strongly believe that, in order to become a powerful Sith lord, you must master the negative emotions, not succumb to them. That's why the true Sith are so calm, respectful and fearless - they mastered their anger, hatred and fear, not suppressed them like the Jedi. The idea of a galactic ruler being an evil dictator simply because he's a Sith Lawd is weird to me. Sure, Count Dooku is the real space fascist, warmonging and ruling for the benefit of the Trade Federation, Banking Clan, etc, but him seeking more power is justified. Palpatine doesn't really do anything wrong in the OT, and his secret leadership of the Separatists in the Prequels lead to their ultimate destruction ...And please, let's not get too political, please Quote

Sheev engineers a conflict from the ground up to get himself into ultimate power via a war in which he controls everything. He emotionally manipulates Anakin into doing what he KNOWS is wrong and by extension, gets him to the point when Anakin's own wife, Padme, tries to stop him, he kills the one person Skywalker was trying to save. Palpatine also sweeps away the Old Republic with a dictatorship, eventually dissolving the Senate in ANH. He tortures people (such as Luke) when they don't join him, motions Anakin to kill Dooku (who is too blindsided by the betrayal to reveal Sidious to the two heroes) and gives the go ahead to build two literal planet killers - the Death Stars I and II. Sheev also massacres an entire religious order of tens of thousands down to the handful who slip through his grasp... even children are not spared by his own order to Anakin of "Show no mercy". He also wanted to take over his own granddaughters body to keep his spirit from dying! Sheev isn't calm, he' manipulative. He's not fearless, he's afraid of loosing his immense power. Respectful is not even in the Emperor's vocabulary. He is EVIL, pure and simple! Edited December 2, 2024 by Murdoch17 Quote
