Locking diffs you say?

That would be cool, their usefulness is in replicating the real thing. Are they useless in a purely manual model? could you not say that about the whole engine and transmission?

I agree with this!

At least the axles won't be so horrendously massive (wasn't the axle of the zeros almost as thick as the whole wheel!) only obnoxiously massive!

I think this would be different in this case for a couple of reasons. First, in a manual model, the axle would not have to be as sturdy (massive) as in an RC model. Also, no planetary wheel hubs would have to be used here, so the axle could use different wheel hubs that could be easier (thinner) to mount into a live axle on the rear. Most importantly, the front suspension on the G is double wishbone independent, not a live axle, so that would require completely different technique to build the axle. Finally, the new 2L driving ring from the Yamaha allows a narrower locking diff to be built (both in a live axle and in an independent suspension). And best of all, track width of the Defender does have enough space for an extra 2L diff locking ring! So I'm definitely expecting locking diffs on this one, as it's a definitive feature of the G, and then it would be an evolution of the Defender!

In that case, if the suspension system(s) are faithfully recreated, diff-locks are implemented and so is the AWD, then the gearbox will be a welcome thing or icing on the cake? Based on what I have read so far, the diff-locks are much anticipated from this Lego model. I just hope they don't slap a sticker saying it has a gearbox like they did with the 42156 :pir-tongue:

That's a good question, because I'm not sure both the diff locks and a complete gearbox (hi-low, DNR, 4-speed automatic parts) could fit in, even with the new gearbox parts. But I'm not even sure that the new gearbox parts are enough to make a compact (linear) 4-speed gearbox, that might require some new gear sizes anyway (they may rather be useful for an 8-speed variant). So I could imagine that they leave out the 4-speed part, and keep the hi-low range and the DNR selector in favor of the diff locks. Or the other way around, they focus on the gearbox, and leave out (some of) the diff locks.

BTW, if they do the new electric version, then it makes more sense to focus on the diff locks than on the gearbox, right? Or does the electric version even have diff locks?

There's nothing to apologize for, don't worry :) It's either an unexpected one (namely the missing number 42183), or, going by recent years, it's the Mercedes G Wagon. As I say going by recent years I mean the flagship doesn't always have the biggest part count (although close to it), but it's surely not a 1:8 Supercar (see 2016, 2018, etc.).

That's why as I have said earlier I really do not have my hopes too up for the set, at least not yet. They slap a 7-speed gearbox sticker on the 42156 and a lever for a non-exiting gearbox on the 42154 🤦🏻‍♂️ (both do have new parts with faithfully recreated suspension system and it is 2024)

Guess we will know in bits by bits soon.

You don't need diff locks when you have one motor per wheel and when you can control each one individually.

I hope this set is NOT like that because then how do you have a gearbox, how do you have a center diff, how do you have the shifter mechanis, how do you have a DNR selector, how do you have a hi/low range selector, how do you have anything interesting...

Might as well just buy 42099 in that case

I was talking about real life application, not the set. I would not worry, I don't think it will be motorized, let alone use 4 motors and 4 gearboxes.

ok I see :P

One reason why it won't have motor per wheels: motor per wheel are 4 motors + at least steering should be motorized additionallly, which requires 5th port and second battery PU box, which is out of this price.

  Golly... I was worried there was some huge construction set or other flagship that I had not heard about.  :shrug_confused: oh well.  G Wagon it is... though it hardly looks much like a "flagship".  I think something being assigned to the number 42183 is unlikely...

Wow, is that how the real car is made? I didn't think there would be so many motors and even 4 gearboxes, that sounds a bit complex.. (though looking at some videos, I guess that's a hi/lo gearbox?) Anyways, in that case, I don't think they'd make the electric version.

Original EQG has one motor per wheel and they can imitate all 3 diff locks

Yeah, have four independent hi/lo gearboxes does seem like some overengineering! Still, it's the good kind, I think

Hi everyone, does anyone know if this is coming to Europe on the 1st of August?

I believe so.

As long as it meets my expectations I will get it as soon as possible, and if not, I don't know.

1. Shortened  CV joints from the Audi

2. Transmission parts from the Yamaha, especially driving rings and 24t clutch gears

3. Daytona diffs

4. Audi hubs

Would be cool, but not necessary:

5. Kawasaki engine parts

6. 5 spoke rims

7. Off-road style tires

8. Something to reduce bulkiness of axles using planetary or Audi hubs

I'm talking only about parts because I mostly buy sets for that reason (the zetros had an awesome playing experience though).

Will we see photos soon? This is sounding interesting to me.

Ofc! I mean we are bound to see photos, are not we? :pir-tongue: Just do not know how soon it will be! I guess pretty soon...

Motorized 4x4, 3xdiff-locks(remote control would be a bonus), quick detachable case are top3 functions in my mind...if with high/low speed transmission...ahh homerun...TRAXXAS TRX4 LEGO enhanced version!

P.S. Again, show my respect to gyenesv, Ford Bronco RC (42126 + 42129 dual alternate, MOC-139309) masterpiece!

God! Even the pic of McLaren Supercar is out! Where are ya 42177?!?

This is one of those few sets whose release is less than a month away (if the leaked informations are correct) and people still wishing and speculating stuffs
