Algernon Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Well why are you even bothering to click on the star wars forum link then??? This is old now, but I feel I should clarify. I like LEGO Star Wars but it's hard for me to justify those prices when there are any number of practical things that I could be putting my money towards instead. When the choice is between a TIE Fighter or a tank of gas... That said, I will probably still pick up that TIE Fighter at some point. Quote
will Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 Amazon UK has got the X-wing for £43 at the moment. The price seems to go up and down every few days but that's the lowest I've seen it. Just waiting for the TIE to come down a bit in price.... Quote

just2good Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Found 3488, 9492, 9676, and 9491 at my local Learning Express in Coconut Creek, Florida today. Here's a video of their availability: Quote
just2good Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 The X-wing Starfighter set 9677 is available for preorder on B&N for $8 ($10 regular price)! Quote
Zilcho Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I saw a £56 obi wans starfighter in Westfield, London. I also saw a £40 ARC fighter, both reduced but probably gone now. Question: Why have the prices gone up so much? Anakins interceptor 2012 - £35 Anakins interceptor 200(5/6?) - £15 starfighter + vulture droid. Is it to do with the economic crisis, will we ever see prices go down? Quote
CF Mitch Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Hey guys, I have a question for my fellow dutchmen... Do any of you know when and where the exclusives such as Anakin's Jedi Interceptor will arrive? 'cause I keep reading about stores such as Target and TRU, but as we don't have that one in Holland I was wondering which store might sell the exclusives... Thanks in advance! Mitch Quote
Alldarker Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Hey guys, I have a question for my fellow dutchmen... Do any of you know when and where the exclusives such as Anakin's Jedi Interceptor will arrive? 'cause I keep reading about stores such as Target and TRU, but as we don't have that one in Holland I was wondering which store might sell the exclusives... Thanks in advance! Mitch I've seen previous US store exclusives sold in both Intertoys and Bart Smit here in Holland. When Toys 'R' Us still had stores here, they sometimes had the US TRU exclusives, but nowadays, ToysXL who took over those stores, just plain suck as far as Lego is concerned (and certainly do not have the TRU exclusives). BTW, even S@H exclusives (like the Medieval Market Village) will sometimes find their way into stores like Top1Toys. So I'd say just give it some time. Although personally, I couldn't wait and bought the Y-Wing from S@H... Quote
CF Mitch Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Coincidentally I visited Top1Toys and ToysXl today. Neither had anything so far. Top1Toys didn't even have the new SW line yet. ToysXL who took over those stores, just plain suck as far as Lego is concerned (and certainly do not have the TRU exclusives). That is very true indeed. So I guess I'll stick to Top1Toys then. And yeah, there is always the S@H indeed Thanks for the reply Regards, Mitch Quote
ETAV8R Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 SoCal Targets are getting the first wave of 2012 Star Wars. Interesting that Anakins Interceptor did not have "special edition" on the packaging. It was on the shelf right next to the Naboo fighter which is a special edition Target exclusive. Quote
mutley777 Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 Amazon UK have loads of Star Wars sets on sale at the moment for around the 20-25% mark. The most noteable being some of the january sets. Droid Escape £16.52 17% off Geonosian Cannon £16. 67 17% off X-wing £39.94 20% off Tie Fighter £39.82 20% off I used some of my birthday vouchers to order the X-wing and Tie fighter. Quote

Bob Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I don't mean to troll or start an argument here, but does anyone else find that the prices of these sets are starting to get a bit ridiculous? I was looking through the pictures of the Malevolence, and figuring that a ship like that had to be at least $100 or less, but it's $120. It doesn't even look halfway decent. It's rather sad that the cheapest product in the summer line (excluding the planets sets) is the $24.99 Desert Skiff. I know that over the past few years that prices on this line have slowly been going up. It's been noted many times before, and the answers are rather simple: people want these sets. As long as Lucasfilms continues making new stuff, then this theme will continue to thrive because kids are still going to beg their parents for it. So, logically, since they have a monopoly on Star Wars LEGO, they'll continue to raise the price. It's simple economics, really. We might also blame inflation on the recent increases in price as well. We can even cite that historically, licensed products have cost more than the original ideas. However, I've picked a few examples of new 2012 sets and compared them with older sets. Here's my results: (I'm not going to compare the sets from 2001 and 1999, like the skiff and the droid escape, because they're far too old and obviously not as well designed and made as the newer ones) 7658-1: Y Wing Starfighter (2007), 454 pieces, 2 minifigures; $39.99 9495-1: Gold Leader's Y-Wing Starfighter (2012), 458 pieces, 3 minifigures; $49.99 Comments: For one extra minifigure and four extra pieces, there's a markup of about ten dollars. 7263-1: TIE Fighter (2005), 159 pieces, 2 minifigures; $20.00 9492-1: TIE Fighter (2012), 413 pieces, 4 minifigures; $54.99 Comments: There's no contest here, about three hundred more pieces, two more figures, but a $34.99 increase. 9494-1: Anakin's Jedi Interceptor (2012), 300 pieces, 5 minifigures; $39.99 7256-1: [Anakin's] Jedi Starfighter and Vulture Droid (2005), 202 pieces, 1 minifigure; $19.99 Comments: Again, even though the new version is so much better and there's newer figures, did it have to be marked up by about twenty dollars for 99 more pieces and four more figures? 6212-1: X-wing Fighter (2006) 437 pieces, 6 minifigures; $49.99 9493-1: X-wing Starfighter (2012) 560 pieces, 4 minifigures; $59.99 Comments: For about ten dollars more, we get one hundred extra pieces but lose two figures. On the positive side, we gained two brand new figures in the 2012 set, whilst we only gained one new figure in the 2006 set. I'm going to say it in bold lettering, these sets have obviously gotten better as the years have gone by. However, there comes a point where certain sets don't need to be marked up this much. Obviously, many (as in kids) don't have the 2005, 2006, and 2007 sets because they weren't old enough at that time. So, naturally, LEGO is able to capitalize on the fact that they're releasing new older sets. Case in point, the Malevolence shouldn't be as expensive as it is. I'm starting to think that these sets are being marked up only because of the minifigures. LEGO has obviously learned that the minifigures are a core part of why we buy the sets (Hence the Battlepacks, and out of theme, the Collectable Minifigures) so they're able to justify putting a new figure in a set and then marking up the price because the know we will shell out the big bucks to buy the set and the new figure. It's simple market economics, and it's the same reason why the collectable minifigures are now 2.99 instead of their original 1.99. Back to the minifigure point, as I said with the Y-Wing, they're able to mark a price up by ten dollars for an extra minifigure. The answer is simple, they've advertized that all the figures are brand new. Gold Leader (really just a new helmet and a standard pilot head, torso, and legs), a new astromech droid, and a new Ceremonial Princess Leia. What about the X-Wing? It's got the same Luke and the same R2-D2, but it's also got a new astromech (different colour) and Porkins (well designed and better than Gold Leader). Overall, I might be contradicting myself here, and stating the obvious, but that's just the way I see it. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong space or something, I just felt it would go well here in the 2012 discussion thread about prices. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 7263-1: TIE Fighter (2005), 159 pieces, 2 minifigures; $20.00 9492-1: TIE Fighter (2012), 413 pieces, 4 minifigures; $54.99 Comments: There's no contest here, about three hundred more pieces, two more figures, but a $34.99 increase. Actually, by the golden 10:1 parts per dollar ratio, three hundred pieces would be a $30 increase. Two minifigs for $5 is about what you'd pay for two CMFs. So this is a very reasonable increase in price, considering the increase in size. Quote
Clone OPatra Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Plus, I don't see how your comparisons between new and old sets has any bearing on the Malevolence. It may be an ugly model, but it's around 74 studs long and according to FBTB 1,101 pieces. How is that at all bad for $120? That's what it's been for several years now and it hasn't kept increasing. Brickadeer Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) *price issue* Personally, I do not know what criteria to apply to determine whether or not the price increase is rational or not. Personally, I'd be happy to see again battlepacks at amazon.de for EUR 7,86. But this is not very likely to happen. Right now, I'm not prepared to pay EUR 16,99 for a battlepack. But fortunately, there are a lot of opportunities to buy sets for prices I still find "reasonable", that is prices that I'm prepared to pay. The new X-Wing 9493 was announced to cost EUR 69,99 and still costs EUR 69,99 at Lego. But is was available for EUR 56 from the beginning, so the current actual prices are 80% of what Lego announced, the new battlepacks were available for 70% of what Lego announced. Two minifigs for $5 is about what you'd pay for two CMFs. So this is a very reasonable increase in price, considering the increase in size. While that may be true, the Collectable Minifigures are their own line completely uninvolved with Star Wars. I'll say this, the level of detail applied to most Star Wars figures does warrant it to be a tad more expensive, but what irks me a bit is when they advertise the new Gold Leader as a brand new figure when really all it's only a new helmet. Plus, I don't see how your comparisons between new and old sets has any bearing on the Malevolence. It may be an ugly model, but it's around 74 studs long and according to FBTB 1,101 pieces. I was using the Malevolence as an example of a new set that probably shouldn't be worth it's hefty price tag. Also, the length shouldn't have a bearing on the price either. It's just my opinion on the set. I wasn't aware that it had that many pieces, and doing research most sets that big are at the same price. However, I'm not sure where they're fitting that many pieces. Quote
Brickdoctor Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 While that may be true, the Collectable Minifigures are their own line completely uninvolved with Star Wars. I'm using it as a comparison for price. The fact that Star Wars is licensed balances out the fact that the new minifig doesn't require any new molds, plus the Star Wars minifig is in all likelihood European plastic, while the CMFs are Chinese. I'm just using it as a general guideline - $2-$3 is a reasonable price per minifig. Quote
