[Rockwail HSS] Sculptor at work: statue for the King

We go back several centuries, to a time when an alliance of dwarves, humans and orcs had successfully defended their stronghold in the Moruth Swamplands. In the wake of their victory, the King of Rockwail commissioned the sculptor's guild to make an enormous statue of Merin Uîr, a legendary warrior who was said to have defeated multiple enemy platoons in the Boulder Bogs through ambushes and trickery. The sculptor's guild was happy to take on the King's request. 

Sculptor vedette Yurro has taken the lead on this task. 

He is carving the head, torso and upper arms from a single block of stone. Meanwhile another experienced sculptor has started on the lower arms and hands, and apprentices are being instructed to carve out the rough shape of the pelvis and legs, which will later be finished up by Yurro. A statue this size is a serious undertaking, and lots of things can go wrong in the process, but so far Yurro and his crew have not had any major setbacks. A relief!

Yes, there will be a the full statue later.  I'm sitting on quite a lot of (mostly) finished Rockwail stuff, but I don't want to spill all of the beans yet.  Cheers!

Nice one @Exetrius! Great idea and shaping on that statue. I really dig the ’sunk in’ base and that it’s in two different colours! 

As far as I’m concerned I could easily go for some new beans already 😃 keep’em coming

Nice build.  I like the scaffolding that you put around the statue.  Nice use of tiles and bricks to get the statues shape.

Really beautiful work!  I love the SNOT brick base and frame.  I think it really adds to the lines of the sculpture, all of the straight, precise lines suggesting the same in the sculpture and defining it a bit more subconsciously.  Love the grey 4 petal flowers!  I didn't know they came in the 4 petal variety, I only saw the new 5 petals.  The brick built scaffold and sculptor are great, and I love how you have made the angle of the wheelbarrow and the table off-kilter from both the ladder and the base to give the build a more 'natural' feel without an 'organic' non-uniform base (if that makes any sense).  I think you did a great job walking that fine line between losing the precision of the sculpture through too organic a build while maintaining a realistic vibe by not attaching everything to a grid.  What are the eyes?  Is that a printed part?  You do a great job incorporating all the various new small tiles that have been made over the recent years.  Great job, and beautiful sculpting!

Hey, sorry for the late reply! I really appreciate all your feedback! 

Good to hear you like the base! It's a subtle but a deliberate departure from my usual studs-up approach with black frame. I considered making a larger scene, with walls and other suggestions of the workshop it is sculpted in, but decided to keep it simple and with little distractions from the statue.

Thanks for calling out the angles, and I do get what you mean with the 'natural feel' and 'organic non-uniform base! One of the first tricks I learned (from a LEGO Idea Book!) to spice up a build with, is to put stuff at an angle. Very effective for creating a sense of realism. And you may be delighted to know everything except for the ladder and one grey cheese slope is connected to the base by one or more studs.

The eyes are indeed a printed part.   It appeared in James Bond's Aston Martin, look under the headlights.

Excellent work on the statue! I also liked some of the smaller details like the cleverly constructed ladder and the spills on the floor being cleaned up!
