Usually normal people can't buy FLL sets so actually don't need to pay attention on that set so this apollo set is actual release of that part.

Did you notice that it has a Audi hubs? Why in a manual model with no drivetrain? And why not in the 42177?

Hopefully it's an announcement for a future RC set that uses them. As for the perpendicular link, it's a very useful part, could find place in a lot of my MOCs .

I assume because they have less slack than normal ones, probably had issues with tyres hitting the wheel covers.

Also they are more expensive to produce since they are from some 7 or so parts, hence they are used only where realy needed,

This is a really great set, going a bit under in the large crowded August 2024 wave. Great video as always.

Indeed this has quite a few interesting bits and mechanisms, I even thought about buying one until I saw the price.. I guess I’ll just shop for some parts then..

With a parts count of 1913 it makes me actually wonder why TLG did not use the opportunity to make this model with 1969 parts to celebrate the year for the moon landing. I mean there are so many random builds included in this set, it should be easy to add 56 additional parts, even when its an additional rock in the end.

The saturn V was build with 1969 parts to comemorate the first moonlanding. 

 

 

Exactly. And its a missed opportunity to do it again when the parts count is so close. 

1972 parts would have been better. The model is a rendition of the LRV of the Apollo 17 whom had its flight in 1972.

 

I don't think TLG cares much about having some specific part count, not even when it could be used in marketing. The 8868 had 952 parts so only a little short of 1000, which would've been first 1000-part Technic set ever, and it even had many opportunities for additional parts (could've included doors for example) but still they opted not to do that. As for the Saturn V, my guess is that the set designer wanted it to have exactly 1969 parts and the set's design allowed for that so it happened, to because marketing department saw it as anything important to consider.

It's important to remember that the set designers didn't aim for 1969 parts when they were designing the Saturn V. It was late in the design process that they noticed the parts count was very close to 1969, and at that point it was easy to make a few small adjustments to achieve the easter-egg parts count. Since the parts count of the Lunar Rover ended up at 1913 with lots of tiny little detail parts, I think it would have taken a pretty big adjustment to the build to add 59 more parts to bump it up to 1972. I don't think it would have been worth the effort if they were already at their budget. On the other hand, if they had budget left over it would have been nice to get 59 more parts for another side build or piece of equipment.

I am interested in purchasing this set, but I want to make sure it will fit in my bookshelf before purchasing.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the LRV in "folded up" mode?

Including the placard, the folder LRV is 15cm high by 24cm wide by 26cm deep. The loaded equipment stand is 25cm high by 45cm wide by 20cm deep.
