Knockoff brands are cheap because the totalitarian regime in China doesn't allow unions and probably dumps their waste in some local river.

It's funny to see people nowadays may have such opinion on China, usually I wouldn't bother myself to join in conversation, since I don't work for the Chinese government and I consider trying to convince someone to abandon one's preconceived idea is a waste of time. But I still want to remind you that China still runs on socialist regime, and labour unions still exist, they are still there to protect the interests of the working class, although they may not be as strong as they used to be. Its decline coincides with the entry of occidental companies in China, aha.  When I was young, I used to work for a French company in China, it was a large joint venture programme between Alstom and a local heavy machinery factory. I witnessed of my own eyes the conflict between the labour and the management, with the Chinese workers trying to retain the existing production capacity and the the way of working they were used to. I also recall that morning when the chairman of labour union approached me in the hallway to make sure that I'm on their side, as they wanted to have someone who could communicate correctly their words to the Frenchmen. A couple of days after this conversation, I was fired, simple coincidence, it must be.

"independent labor unions are almost non-existent in China. The Chinese so-called national trade union is state-controlled. The Chinese government doesn’t allow unions with full legal independence from the national trade union. Worker strikes are illegal."

That doesn't sound worker friendly at all. Mainland China has merged the worst parts of socialism and capitalism and created a dystopian society. That is a good reason to avoid fake products from such places.

This is an example of using one's own preconceived idea to comment on the mechanism of another system, running on a different track. Independent agencies work well for capitalist countries, but in socialist countries, the governing institutions represent the common will of the proletariat and the masses, so as long as the red flag flies, you won't see any independent unions there.  So when you want to understand how things run in another countries, you may have to start from a different angle.

Capitalism is a two bladed knife, we've chosen to use it, along with its consequences. Of course, I believe you live now in a country in which individual free will is guaranteed and you are free to make your own decision when purchasing.

I'll just remind the good folk this topic/thread is a discussion about the upcoming 10335 The Endurance Ship.

If you'd like to discuss the manufacturing of counterfeit brands in China in relation to LEGO Pirates, I can move those to posts to the Knockoff/Clone/Imitation Brand Pirate Sets topic.

Sorry for going off topic too much. I don't mind getting the posts moved there but on the other hand I have nothing more to add to that discussion from what I have already said.

After buying and building The Endurance,  a few things come out at me.

First, the positives:

1. It was a very enjoyable build!

2. While it's obviously not a golden age of sail sailing vessel, it is still a wonderful set to behold, and will sit proudly upon my shelf.

3. I have never wanted a second copy of a set so badly for the parts. Such a great parts pack, for my building wants, at any rate.

Now, the negatives, which is really only one: The main sails don't looks great. They sit too flat, but not perfectly flat. Every review, every image I have seen it's all the same. If Lego had made the sails just a tiny bit taller, so they could billow in the wind, or even if the top two were like the bottom one, where they only attached to 2 points, the top, instead of 4, it would look so much better.

Other than that, I love this set, I highly recommend it, and I will likely try to get a second copy for the parts at some point.

What kind of ship MOCs would you use the parts for?  Twentieth century vessels? Or would the parts work well for pirate and imperial ships?

Both? Also, Blacktron spaceships. And the tan parts are good for ports, landscaping. But black parts in particular are great for almost anything, but Blacktron in particular.

Well, I got myself the Endurance. :pir-huzzah1:The plan is to build it according to the instruction first, then after some time maybe try to convert it to minifg scale? We shall see. :pir-grin:

Since no one seems to want to discuss this set anymore, I just want to give you a short impression of mine, as I built it recently.

I like the ship very much for the most part. The SNOT techniques used to build the hull are great and you can definitely see all the effort put into the design. The overall shape and the colours are great.

I agree that the sails are the biggest drawback. First of all, they are too flat. Those sails should have some wind in them! :pir_laugh2: I also don't like the way they are attached, as most of them have sides or corners which hang loosely. These are supposed to be sails, not flags! :pir_laugh2: I understand that certain trade-offs were needed to gain access to the removable sections of the deck. Speaking of which, they are not that easily accessible anyway!

Don't get me wrong though, I like this set a lot, just the sails are a bit of a letdown for me. By the way, if you want to see a truly objective video review of this set, not sponsored in any way by LEGO, with all the pros and cons, I highly recommend this one:

We're all eagerly awaiting the pirate ship MOCs made from the set's parts :pir-grin:
